Dear Friends and Neighbors:

District G Houston City Council Member Greg Travis, in conjunction with the Alief Family YMCA, kicked off the first-ever District G Free Swim Lesson and Water Safety Program at the Village Place Community Pool in west Houston.  Council Member Travis created this important new program using Harris County Department of Education CASE for Kids grant funds ($12,500) and City Council District Service Funds ($7,500).

"There is not a single public swimming pool in my entire district, yet there are many kids who want to learn to swim," Travis said. "I am excited to offer this program with the YMCA; these lessons will not only be fun, they will teach kids life-saving skills." In Texas, drowning is the second leading cause of death for children under the age of 14.

The first 20 participants jumped in the pool today and are already on their way to a safer summer.  Professional program staff from the YMCA will conduct sixteen free sessions offered through August 3, 2018. Special thanks to the Village Place Homeowners Association for use of the community pool.
