  District Governor's Message
Dear Rotary Friends and Family,

5010DG Harry Kieling catches up with Wilson, son of Anchorage Gateway Rotary 2017-2018 president Andrea Gusty at Gateway's annual fundraiser dinner on April 26,2018.

I just wanted to remind you of the great Rotary District 5010 Conference in Seward that we are preparing for you!  I hope you don't miss it!

The Rotary District 5010 District Conference
It Will Be the Greatest Show on Earth
Seward, Alaska. May 17-20, 2018
Our 2018 District Conference is just around the corner. If you haven't signed up yet it isn't too late. You can do it right  here. Check it out and watch the awesome video in the upper right-hand corner (courtesy of Dan and Lisa Phillips). You can take advantage of a discount with the Alaska Railroad (Under  Conference Travel and Discount Codes). You can also book your hotel room there.

It will be a District Conference you won't forget. It will be fun yet inspiring. The Seward Rotarians are pulling out all the stops. Rotary International President Ian Riseley is sending his representative Past District Governor (PDG) Stella Roy all the way from Newfoundland to be with us. Motivational Speaker and PDG Mi chael Caruso and his partner Rene (both Rotarians) will inspire us. Iditarod Champ Mitch Seavey will entertain us. PDG and Professional Magician, Jim Lang will amaze us. My fellow District Governor and noted Management expert, Don Evans will get you thinking. A "Rotary Cares for Kids" presentation will remind you of why we are all caring and kind Rotarians. Our Youth Exchange students and veterans will share with you their experience. DG Mike Kinsey is bringing a contingent of Rotarians from Ontario, Canada just to help us celebrate. PDG Madhukar Malhotra will lead a contingent of Rotarians from India who will help us honor our beloved Jon Deisher.

All of this will kick off with District Assembly Thursday, May 17, 2018. The day will conclude with a Bar-B-Q hosted by fellow Rotarian Tom Tougas. Entertainment will be provided by Paul Harris Fellow and Alaska Balladeer, Hobo Jim. Friday night we will head out to the beautiful and remote Fox Island Lodge for the Governor's Banquet. On Saturday, we will be at the Sealife Center where the chefs of Seward will dazzle you with their specialties. Afterward, you can help us party (with DJ Lefty) and support the eventual end of polio All the while you can see old friends and meet new ones. You can talk to other Rotarians about their incredible projects and journeys. Are you wondering what to wear? Anything from Orange Flight Suits to blue jeans and tennis shoes. We are talking Alaska Casual. You should by now know what I will wear. I will also be wearing my "Be Humble, Be Kind, Take Action" fishing vest. And if you hurry and order by April 30 you can buy the cool and practical vest right on the web site. It will be delivered to you at the Conference. Back to the "dress code" Anything goes.  Carharts and Xtra Tuffs are A-OK too.

Thank You for being 5010 Rotarians and thank you for coming to our conference. It will be one you won't forget.
Be Humble, Be Kind, Take Action

Lights, camera, action!
Past District (D6380) Governor Michael Angelo Caruso is our keynote speaker at the Governor's Banquet.  Michael has a relaxed, conversational style of speaking that's both entertaining and educational. He speaks "in the round" to involve the audience unlike any other speaker on the circuit.  It's fascinating to watch Michael do his "stand-up comedian magic!" Michael's performance is sure to be a highlight of our district conference this May.  Watch more of Michael here.

Rotary Membership Moment
Rotary Membership Moment #5
Why Did You Join Rotary?
Why Did You Stay?
I joined Rotary, because I thought it would be fun. And it is! I also thought it would promote my business. I owned Gold's Gym, in Anchorage, when I originally joined Rotary. Was it good for my gym? Absolutely! Quite a few Members of South Anchorage joined my gym! More importantly, it was good for me!
The longer I was involved, things changed, instead of being a member of Rotary, I actually became a Rotarian. I would have to stay, the reason I am a Rotarian, besides what Rotary stands for, is because my friends are Rotarians. We all have other friends who are not Rotarians. Keep asking them! Do you not want to share what we have with your friends?
I live by this and I advise this to friends and family. You need to associate with those you aspire to be like and I want to be like all my friends who are Rotarians. I cannot think of a more worthy goal!
The longer you are in Rotary, you actually start to fall in love with Rotary and what it does, and forget about what it can do for you. How can you not love Polio Plus? All our projects, student scholarships and sponsorships and activities, fellowships and firesides!
Be Humble and Kind, but do not forget to share with the world all the things you are doing!!
Remember, Every Rotarian, Every Month, Invite a Guest a Month, a New Member a Year!

Polio Plus
Dave Kester Writes about Polio:

Polio Update
February 3, 2018

Reported Cases of Polio continue to go down. 2017 had 22 cases down from 37 in 2016. All the cases where in Afghanistan and Pakistan. None in Nigeria. For 2018 there have been 3 reported cases in Afghanistan. Now more than ever, we need to keep the momentum going if we are to make Polio History by eradicating only the 2nd disease in the history of mankind.

As to fundraising so far, the good news is that through January 2018, comparing District 5010 with the other Districts in our Zone, we lead the way with contributing 20% of our DDF Funding to PolioPlus. Also, we can be proud that with combining the districts $35,000 check and what the individual clubs have contributed so far, we rank 3rd in our Zone for per capita giving. However we cannot rest on our laurels, the bad news is we are slightly below the pace we need to be to match last year's contributions to PolioPlus.

Also, it may surprise you that only 20% of the clubs in our district (only 8 clubs) have met or exceeded the RI Challenge of $1500 per club. Additionally, 40% of our clubs (that's 16 clubs) have contributed nothing to PolioPlus so far this year. Now I understand there are clubs that have fundraising events planned in the coming months so I am still hopeful we will make our goal as a district. But it is critical we have all clubs on board if we are going to meet RI's funding commitment of $50,000,000 each year for 3 years and take advantage of the Gates Foundation 2 for 1 match.

How about some recognition?
Our districts leading club so far contributing $7,260 to PolioPlus? Juneau-Gastineau.
In fact, the Juneau clubs appear to be our true Polio Champions with Juneau-Glacier Valley ranking 3rd with a little over $6,800.
Fairbanks Club is coming in so far at 2nd with $7,150.
Come on Anchorage, Eagle River and the Valley clubs. The bar has been set.
Anyone care to guess who the top club is for per capita giving at over $254 per person? E-Club. Our district's average per capita giving is $26! Way to go E-Club!
Special shout out to Whitehorse who has already contributed almost $1,400 in a club with only 24 members.

Finally, please make every effort to attend the District Conference in Seward this spring where on Saturday night, May 19th, we will be celebrating or districts accomplishments over the years in helping to eradicate polio and honor a long time PolioPlus Champion and fighter of the disease, John Diesher. There will be plenty of food, fun and dancing that evening as we celebrate and continue the Countdown towards Making Polio History.

Our international project in Corozol Belize. Our first eco toilet system.  A really neat and appreciated project!  Team Fairbanks

Mike, Peggy, Shelly Falk, Ron, Bill, Mary Karney
Here are some some pictures of the waterless toilet project that Wayne Clark helped fund during his year. This was done in cooperation with the Rotary Club of Corozal in Northern Belize and the name of the elementary school is Concepcion. Tap water is not available from  10 AM to 4 PM each day, so the design is for a waterless (compost) toilet facility. Each side has four bathrooms, with two open for boys and two for girls for one year. Then the bathrooms are rotated and the operating ones closed, and the resting ones opened for use. Over the next year, the bathrooms that were in use finish composting and the completed soil is then removed from the vault beneath that toilet. The soil is clean (disinfected from the high composting temperature of ~140F) and usable for gardening or landscaping. Each time the facility is used, the kids add a scoop of wood shavings to the open toilet. The wood shavings are donated by a local wood working business.

A rain collection system with storage tanks feeds two hand washing sinks, one on the girls' side and one on the boys' side. The tanks can also be filled from tap water when pressure is available if there has been no rain. The vent pipes from the vaults are painted black, and when the sun hits them, the hot air rapidly rises clearing out any odors from the vaults. It is well constructed and very practical for this school. The club president, Shelly Falk, toured Peggy and I through the facility with her two Rotarian engineers who designed the facility, Ron and Bill, on February 1. Our friends from San Ignacio, Pat and Mary Karney, drove us up. The Corozal Rotarians (and the school staff and children) were all very thankful for the $10,000 donation from our Rotary Club and have welcomed any of our Rotarians to visit them and this remarkable facility in the future.

Alaska IRRF - Wolf Lake Fly in by Anchorage Rotarians
Well--it wasn't quite a tour of California wineries, but the Alaska IRRF group had a little fly in to Ray Huot's hangar at Wolf Lake in the Matanuska Valley.  Nice gathering, with lots of food and hangar flying.  I think there were 5 planes and several drive-ins. DG Harry Kieling came in the process of giving a BFR to one of the IFFR members.  He reviewed the upcoming District Conf and signed up pilots to give the visiting dignitaries flight seeing down at Seward.  Cold spring day with some interesting winds, but all made it safe and sound.  I've attached a few photos for your interest.  Next fly in is July to work on an airstrip in Wrangells-St Elias National Park.  Maybe a fly in in June to Rainy Pass Lodge for lunch and museum tour.  Jump in and come join us!

Patty Merrit of College Rotary Club in Fairbanks
Patty Merritt was selected as the Usibelli Distinguished Teacher for UAF 2018.  This is a highly competitive award that comes with a big fact check from the Usibelli family.  Also, the person i nominated for the Usibelli Service  Award was also selected, so it is a red letter day in my world!  Here is the picture they are using for the promotion.  Probably does not make the newsletter, since it is not strictly Rotary, but I thought you might like to know. She is a past president of The Rotary Club of College Fairbanks.
