CHAMBER REWIND...

Our fourth annual Chamber Cares event was a huge hit! So many members of the community came out to support the Sterling Heights and Shelby Township/Utica Fire and Police play a great game of basketball! Everyone enjoyed the many vendors and restaurants and overall had a great time. Special thanks to Parkway Christian School for hosting the event, and extra special thanks to all of our sponsors! The event would not have been possible without our many supporters in the community. We can't wait to see everyone next year!

SEN. GARY PETERS INTRODUCES NEW LEGISLATION ON CYBERSECURITY
U.S. Senators Gary Peters (D-MI) and Jim Risch (R-ID) introduced bipartisan legislation to provide additional cybersecurity resources to small businesses. The bill would create cybersecurity assistance units at Small Business Development Centers (SBDCs) throughout the country. The new assistance units will serve as a point-of-contact for small businesses that suffer a cyber-attack, helping businesses find a solution to the problem and prevent more attacks in the future.

STERLING HEIGHTS INVESTING IN LOCAL ROADS
Another bitter winter has come and gone, and while we look forward to the warm weather and the fun that summer brings, first we must address the crumbling condition of our roads. Unfortunately, the State is underfunding road improvements and studies show that $3 billion more is needed annually to address the poor road conditions in the State. It will be up to the State legislature to figure out how to
allocate more funding to what is arguably the State's highest priority.

DEEP PURPLE, JUDAS PRIEST CO-HEADLINE TOUR
Legends will collide late this summer when Deep Purple and Judas Priest embark on a co-headlining North American tour. Produced by Live Nation, the outing will visit 25 cities across the U.S. and Canada to include a performance at Michigan Lottery Amphitheatre at Freedom Hill as part of the Fifth Third Bank Concert Series on Friday, August 24 at 7 p.m. The Temperance Movement will provide support.

NON-PROFIT FOCUS GROUP

This group of professionals meets with a purpose; they work together on developing strategy and best practices for becoming better equipped to manage and support their organizations, and this works to strengthen everyone who attends.

Their mission is to collaborate with other Chamber members to bring focus and awareness of their individual needs to members. Meetings include open networking, relationship building, problem solving and a mutual support organization, all focused on the unique needs of nonprofits in today's business environment.
Chamber members are invited to visit a meeting to learn first-hand how we may be able to assist you in better managing your nonprofit. Chamber membership is required to become a member of this dynamic group.

These meetings are chaired by Lindsay Calcatera who is Vice President of Growth and Communication with Macomb Oakland Regional Center (MORC) 16200 19 Mile, Clinton Twp. where the meetings are held each month on the second Tuesday at 3 pm. In addition to chairing the group, Lindsay works to secure dynamic speakers and organizes a monthly newsletter for the group. This group is scheduled to meet next on May 8.

To learn more about this group and to schedule a visit, please contact Chamber staffer, Patty Le Duc, at 586.731.5400 x21 or email.

M-59 RECONSTRUCTION PROJECT UPDATE FROM MDOT:

MDOT continued to work through the weather and made progress on the M-59 project this week. They are working to make sure that they construct the longest-lasting roadway possible. This effort will help ensure that the inconvenience you are experiencing now has a long term payoff. Rather than rush the construction, MDOT decided to take some additional time to make repairs to the underlying soil to ensure the aggregate and pavement that would be placed on top of it will last for many years to come. They are expecting the work at the intersection at Garfield to take two additional days, with a final completion early Saturday morning. They were able to place the curb and gutter in the intersection and s incerely thank you for your patience and apologize for the delays.

The westbound closure of 696 is also underway.  Expect higher than normal traffic volumes. MDOT is reviewing the progression of the traffic signals due to that extra traffic and will be making adjustments during the week as traffic finds it way around during this project. Check MDOT's website for updates.
