Linda Lee Allan Home Builders Scholarship
Created in memory of Linda Lee Allan by her devoted husband and family, loving friends, admiring colleagues and loyal customers in celebration of her many contributions to the home building community and the economic development of our region. It is the intent of the donors to make a college education accessible to children and grandchildren of current members of the Home Builders Association of Fayetteville, Inc.
Eligibility
: This scholarship is available to students who meet all of these requirements:
- Graduating high school senior from Cumberland County;
- Parents or grandparents maintain an active/current membership in the Home Builders Association of Fayetteville, Inc.;
- Will attend an accredited community college, college or university within six months of the application date.
Priorities
: The Scholarship Selection Committee will consider the following priorities equally:
- Financial need as demonstrated by the Student Aid Report, which is generated from the FAFSA,
- Academic achievement, and
- Citizenship
This is a non-renewable scholarship.

March is Ladder Safety Month
According to OSHA, falls are the leading cause of death in the construction industry, and in 2016, one-third of these falls were falls from ladders. More than 150 construction workers died as a result of ladder misuse. Ladder accidents also caused more than 20,000 workplace injuries in 2016, according to the Bureau of Labor. Fortunately, falls from ladders can be prevented through proper training.
Builders Mutual created this ladder safety infographic as a quick reference training guide. Presented in both English and in Spanish, it explains important steps to remember that will help ensure on-the-job safety when working with ladders.

CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY SAFETY COURSE
Do you or your employees have the tools you need to work safely? The OSHA 10-hr course is designed to assist employees with recognition and avoidance of safety and health hazards on the jobsite. This is an entry level look at the OSHA standards as they apply to construction jobsites. Who should attend? Company owners, field employees and anyone who has a safety responsibility on the jobsite would benefit from this class. Learn from actual claims that have occurred - one misstep or unsafe behavior can affect you and your company. We will employ hands on discussions of real life situations that you may have experienced and the solutions to correct them.
All participants must be able to pass the final test to earn a course completion card. By attending this class, you'll be able to:
- Recognize and avoid jobsite hazards and protect others from harm
- Learn about what rights and responsibilities you have as an employee in regards to safety on the jobsite
- Anticipate what to expect from an OSHA inspection, including employer rights
- Comply with OSHA standards for fall protection, electrical, PPE, and more
- Save money by avoiding fines and costly insurance claims
- Feel safer working on the jobsite
- Earn a course completion card from Federal OSHA

Members-Only Webinar: Tax Reform and Your Bottom Line
The landmark tax reform legislation, which took effect Jan. 1, created significant changes in the tax code that will affect the housing industry and our small business members.
To help you understand how these changes could impact your business, NAHB is providing a members-only webinar on March 5 at 1 p.m. ET.
The webinar will feature NAHB tax experts and outside tax counsel who will focus on the specific changes that will most directly impact small businesses, including the 20-percent pass-through deduction, limitations on the business interest deduction and new depreciation guidelines.
Members will have the opportunity to ask questions during the webinar. If you are not able to join the webinar, a replay will be posted on nahb.org.
NAHB remained actively engaged throughout the tax reform debate and fought hard to ensure that our industry's priorities were addressed. As the implementation of the law begins, we will continue to work on behalf of our members and keep you updated as more information becomes available.

Most builders know there's strong demand for entry-level homes, but the rising costs of construction are making it much more challenging to generate large enough margins to build smaller, single-family detached homes.
Enter the single-family attached homes - aka townhomes. A growing number of buyers are drawn to the relatively large amount of space in a typical townhome, and the potential to still be located within a medium-density, urban neighborhood.
More builders are recognizing the cost benefits of townhomes as well. According to NAHB analysis of Census data, townhome construction in 2017 was up 7% from 2016.
"After a soft patch [in mid-2017], the market share [of new townhouses] is rising again," wrote NAHB Chief Economist Robert Dietz in the Eye on Housing blog. "I expect future gains as townhouses are a useful bridge from rentership to homeownership for younger prospective home buyers in high-cost markets, among other market opportunities."
After a dramatic decline during the recession of the late 2000's, townhouse starts have experienced a steady resurgence.
