Rally for the Rio 2018

The National Wild and Scenic Rivers system was created by Congress in October of 1968 to preserve certain rivers with outstanding natural, cultural, and recreational values in a free-flowing condition for the enjoyment of present and future generations. There are many such rivers all over the west including in New Mexico.
Next year marks the 50th anniversary of the legislation designating these rivers. To celebrate the many Wild & Scenic rivers, trails, and adventures around Taos, the community is coming together to promote "Wild & Scenic: The Taos Experience."
A number of fun events are planned -- educational, recreational, and artistic. Stay tuned for more information about these events, including a new "Adventure Challenge", BLM tours, a Paint-a-Thon, NeoRio, and the 2nd Annual Amigos Bravos' Rally for the Rio on September 29, 2018! Stay tuned!

Join Us in Welcoming Elena Fernandez to the
Amigos Bravos
Family!
Amigos Bravos is happy to announce the hiring of Elena Fernandez as Projects Associate, effective April 30, 2018.
A native Taoseña, Elena will be responsible for a broad variety of duties including assisting staff on project activities, development and grant writing, administrative duties, and assisting other staff in cultivating and managing an active and engaged membership base, including assisting with outreach activities and events.
Elena completed her B.A. in Philosophy from New Mexico State University. Elena also holds a Master of Science in Leadership from Norwich University. She is currently on the cusp of completing her Masters in Environmental Law & Policy from Vermont Law School.
In her spare time, Elena enjoys hiking, playing in the river with her two dogs, Jingo and Fawkes and searching for stars in the early stages of forming planetary systems for NASA's WISE mission (part of the Citizen Science project).

Gather with the community on Taos Plaza for tree planting, kids activities, and performances by Dread Fermata, the Taos Youth Ballet and a prayer and round-dance by Mike Concha of Taos Pueblo.
2. April 29 | Taos Land Trust Nature Wellness Day, 12-3pm 410 La Posta Road, Taos, NM
In honor of National ParkRx Day, join the Taos Land Trust in a celebration of nature and community wellness at the Rio Fernando Park. Share your vision with Taos Land Trust for walking trails in their new Rio Fernando Park, plant beneficial seeds and get a free tree! (200 trees will be given away by the Taos Tree Board) Other activities include a guided botanical walking tour and a story walk for kids!

3. May 7- 8 | Mount Taylor Mine Hearing, starting at 9 am with public comment at 11:30. Wendell Chino Building 1220 South St Francis Drive, Santa Fe, NM
Come give public comment in support of reclamation of Mt. Taylor uranium mine. Amigos Bravos and the Multicultural Alliance for safe Environment (MASE) are appealing the NM Mining and Minerals Division Director's decision to grant the Mt. Taylor mine active status despite no plans for active mining. Reclamation activities can be avoided/delayed when mines are in active status. Hearing will be held at the Wendell Chino Building, 1220 South St. Francis in Santa Fe. Public comments will be heard at 11am. For more information check out amigosbravos.org or call 758.3874

The students in EPS 110 Water Resources have learned a great deal about local water issues and will present what they learned to the public. Come show your support for these emerging leaders as they present their findings on everything from green infrastructure projects to
E. coli
contamination in the Rio Fernando.

Amigos Bravos has been fiercely committed to fighting for clean water in communities throughout New Mexico for 30 years thanks to support from members from all over the state. While most of our members are in the Taos area, we have enjoyed tremendous support from our neighbors to the south in Santa Fe. On May 17th, we'd like to show our appreciation for our Santa Fe donors with a a Meet-and-Greet event at the Museum Hill Cafe. (Watch for more events like this to recognize supporters in other areas of the state!)

Come help us develop a watershed-based plan to address E. coli pollution in the Rio Fernando, which flows through the heart of Taos. 8. June 22- 24 | Midnight Meadows Restoration Weekend
Volunteers needed to camp out with cool conservationists! We work hard but have fun while we're at it! Come join us for the whole weekend or just for a day on June 23rd.
This will be the first of two weekends where we will be building riparian protection fences and installing erosion control structures to restore the Midnight Meadows Wetland Jewel. 9. July 14 | 12th Annual River & Lands Cleanup, 8am-2pm
The magnificent landscapes in New Mexico deserve our respect. However, persistent littering and illegal dumping by flagrant violators in Taos County forests, mesas, rivers and along roadways is serious problem. Join us for this community-wide cleanup and help keep Taos County beautiful. Volunteers meet at 8am at St. James Episcopal Church in Taos.
