Since last summer, ASI has been part of the Co-Sheltering Collaborative, an effort to identify and promote best practices for people experiencing homelessness and their companion animals. The initiative is led by My Dog is My Home, a nonprofit whose mission is to increase access to shelter and housing for people experiencing homelessness with companion animals. The collaborative comprises nonprofit homeless service providers and government organizations who are actively working to offer co-sheltering to their clients. Collaborative members work together to share expertise, showcase examples of innovative programs that address human and animal sheltering needs, and develop a road map for best practices in co-sheltering.
On May 20, 2019, the collaborative will host a virtual open house. New and prospective members are invited to attend and participate in a discussion about how the Co-Sheltering Collaborative can support their efforts to create an inclusive and safe environment for all clients, including people with animals. Attendees will get a better sense of what the collaborative does, what membership entails, and the benefits of participation. Participants are welcome to stay for the monthly collaborative meeting immediately following the open house, allowing for dialogue with collaborative members as they share ideas and expertise, exchange resources, and discuss the group’s progress.
