Garland City Council Swears in Newly Elected Members
In a special meeting May 15, the Garland City Council quickly put the will expressed by voters into action, authorizing the start of projects from a $423.7 million May 4 bond election and swearing in a new Mayor and four Council Members elected from that same ballot.

Council, which had promised an immediate start and a rapid implementation of eight bond propositions, delivered even before its new oaths of office were administered.
At its Monday annual retreat, Council identified several projects that could start immediately. Wednesday, it amended the 2019 Capital Improvements Program to put $6 million of the 2019 bond projects in motion. Find out more.
City of Garland Prepares to Refresh City Website
During the week of May 20, the City of Garland will flip the switch to turn on a redesigned, more robust website featuring a refreshed color palette, excellent search functionality and an improved mobile experience.

The site will allow you to subscribe to various calendar and informational updates, as well as continue to access and subscribe to receive public meeting agendas. A new feature, My Garland, will allow you to type in your home or business address to see what City facilities and resources serve your area.

Jazz in the Square Thursday, May 23

Garland Pools Open Saturday, May 25
Summer is here, which means it's time for pool season!

City to Monitor Holiday Crowds at Windsurf Bay Park
The City of Garland wants to ensure a fun and safe lake experience at Windsurf Bay Park this Memorial Day weekend. The City will monitor attendance and make sure the popular site does not become overcrowded.
 
When attendance reaches 2,500 at Windsurf Bay Park, nobody else will be allowed to enter the park for the remainder of the calendar day. Notice that the park is full will be given by City employees at the entrance and conveyed in temporary electronic signage nearby. Learn more.
City Holiday Hours and Services: Memorial Day
In observance of Memorial Day, all City of Garland offices,  utility customer service  and tax offices,  libraries , recreation centers and senior centers will be closed Monday, May 27. 

Trash, recycling, and brush and bulky items will be collected on their regular Tuesday-Friday schedules.  Surf and Swim  and  City pools  will remain open.

Garland Youth Council Accepting Applications Through June 9

Interested Garland residents who will be in grades 9-12 during the 2019-20 school year are eligible to apply to serve on the Garland Youth Council.

School Crossing Guards Needed
Do you want to earn extra income working only two hours per day and making a difference in your community?
 
The City of Garland Transportation Department is recruiting candidates interested in the flexibility of working part-time as a school crossing guard, keeping students and neighbors safe as they walk to and from school. The hours are from 7 to 8 a.m. and 3 to 4 p.m. on school days at designated crosswalks.

Apply Now for Boards and Commissions
Residents who serve on Garland's 11 boards and commissions can make a difference in the City and be directly involved with local government. They serve in an advisory or quasi-judicial capacity, providing information directly to the Garland City Council. From planning and development to multicultural events, boards and commission members advise on a range of City services. The City will accept applications for its boards and commissions from May 31 through July 1. Application forms can be found on the City Secretary's page at G arlandTX.govSubmit applications to Ren é  Dowl, City Secretary, by email to  RDowl@GarlandTX.gov  or by U.S. Postal Service to City Hall, 200 N. Fifth St., Garland 75040.

Graduation Traffic Reminder
Through June 21, Garland ISD's Curtis Culwell Center, 4999 Naaman Forest Blvd., will host graduations for many area educational institutions.  In general, motorists can expect traffic congestion along Naaman Forest Boulevard and adjacent roadways approximately an hour before and 30 minutes after graduation events. Non-graduation traffic should bypass that area, if possible.  Motorists can stay aware of potential traffic congestion with this  graduation schedule and map .
