Continuing Education

'Tis the season for CE! This summer there are several large conferences that offer a formidable line-up of continuing education in animal rehabilitation. The AVMA Convention is in Denver from July 13th to 17th; the 10th International Symposium on Veterinary Rehabilitation and Physical Therapy is in Knoxville from July 30th to August 3rd; and if you're hankering for less steamy climes, the CVMA (Canadian Veterinary Medical Association) Convention is in Vancouver from July 5th to the 8th.

At the International Symposium in Knoxville, the AARV and ACVSMR are hosting a pre-symposium summit on July 31st. The AARV morning lecture track consists of three scientific abstracts as well as a panel discussion composed of a veterinarian, a technician and a physical therapist that will focus on their distinct viewpoints of common rehab conditions. In the afternoon lecture, topics include regenerative medicine, tricks of the trade from a physical therapist's perspective, using learning theory to improve rehabilitation sessions, and rehabilitation for the geriatric patient. We encourage you to attend this extra event so don't forget to sign up for it when you register for the symposium.

In other CE news, we are currently organizing the AARV track for VMX 2019 and hope to have the line-up completed soon so stay tuned!

If you have other CE events that pertain to the world of animal rehabilitation that you are interested in letting AARVers know about, please share on our social media or email info@rehabvets.org so we can add them to our calendar.

Have a wonderful summer, and we hope to see you at an upcoming CE event. It is a great way to get involved, network and learn!

Regards,

AARV Student Members: Enter the Royal Canin Student Case Report Competition!

Calling all veterinary students! Are you interested in winning a trip to the 2019 VMX Expo in Orlando, Florida, January 19-23, 2019?

Royal Canin logo
The American Association of Rehabilitation Veterinarians (AARV) has partnered with Royal Canin to offer an exciting opportunity for veterinary students with an interest in physical rehabilitation. Eligible students must currently be enrolled at a U.S. veterinary school during the 2018-2019 academic year, be a member in good standing of the AARV (student memberships are free!) and be able to attend the VMX 2019 Conference.

To be considered, a case report pertaining to physical rehabilitation MUST be submitted by September 14th, 2018, 11:59 p.m. PST. NO LATE SUBMISSIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED. All case reports will be reviewed and the student whose case report is selected will win a trip to the 2019 VMX Conference. The selected student will present their case report as a 15-minute podium presentation during the AARV lecture track.

For complete details about how to submit a case report and enter the competition, please log in to the Grant Opportunities page in the Members Area of our website or contact our University Liaison Jessica Bunch at jbunch@wsu.edu. Thank you to Royal Canin for their continued support of our future veterinarians.

SPOTLIGHT PRACTICE
Animotion

Twelve years ago, Dr. Ron Buffman, one of the two practice owners of Lloyd Animal Medical Center (LAMC) in Stoughton, Massachusetts, adopted a young husky named Leah who accidentally tumbled out a third story window, breaking her back. After multiple surgeries and physical rehabilitation, Leah was able to walk again. Dr. Buffman was so pleased with his own dog's recovery he decided to build a facility to help improve the quality of life for his patients after injury, surgery, or those with geriatric concerns.

Soon, an 800-square-foot addition specifically for animal rehabilitation was built onto LAMC's already existing 7,500-square-foot veterinary hospital. Topped with an airy cathedral ceiling, the new space houses an underwater treadmill, heated swimming pool, and a workout area for therapeutic exercises and various treatment modalities. Veterinary technician Wendy Whitelaw not only became the first CCRP of the team but also created an animated business name for this innovative flagship facility.

Interested in Conducting Clinical Research?

Are you interested in conducting clinical research but don't know where to start?

Canine Rehabilitation Institute (CRI) has created a new online course to demystify clinical research for practicing rehabilitation therapists, interns and residents.  Introduction to Veterinary Clinical Research  is taught by CRI faculty member  Chris Zink, DVM, PhD, DACVP, DACVSMR who has spent more than 30 years doing research.

The entire process from concept to publication is covered during the 10-week course. You will view online lectures, read assignments, and participate in an online live discussion with Dr. Zink each week. You will develop a research hypothesis that matches your interests and clinical caseloads, and then design, carry out and analyze the data for a pilot study. This course is RACE approved by the AAVSB for 15 credit hours.

There are students from the first course that are now collaborating on studies and have been awarded research grants.

AARV members receive a 10% tuition discount. If you have questions or are interested in registering for the next session, email CRI at info@caninerehabinstitute.com.

Hands-On Healing: Physical Rehabilitation for Animals

Never give up. This motivational phrase encourages persistence despite the most challenging, even inconceivable, odds. These three simple yet profound words, etched in huge black letters on a wall at the rehabilitation center, demand attention to anyone reading them - except the patients being treated there don't know how to read. They don't need to.

Vito is hard at work on his therapeutic exercises. He's a 21-pound Pug battling a neurologic condition that has affected his brain and spinal cord. Just two months ago Vito couldn't walk. He knuckled his front paws over and dragged his hind end. Today, he plants his paws atop a giant inflatable blue donut, steadying his back legs on a small bumpy wobble disc teetering across two large plastic purple bones.

Prospective applicants are encouraged to earn points in multiple categories such as becoming an associate member of the American Association of Rehabilitation Veterinarians or writing educational pieces for the public or colleagues.
