MembersAtLarge Message from Members at Large
Angela Taylor
Committee Update

Greetings SACSA Members,

This semester has flown by. Like many of you, I am asking myself: How is it May already? I hope May brings you a strong close to the academic year. I know many of us are in full swing wrapping up this year's activities. I have the privilege of serving as one of your Member at Large (MAL) officers on the Executive Council. One of the responsibilities of my MAL role is to review and propose revisions to SACSA bylaws, policies, and procedures. Once revisions are rolled out to the Association, there will be a call to vote. I encourage you to keep an eye out for that information and remember to vote when the time comes. I wish you success as you close the semester and hope for each of you that you find time this summer to rejuvenate and recharge for an upcoming academic year.

Yours in Service,

Angela B. Taylor

More Reflections from our Past!
  • In 1969 at our twentieth anniversary, two sessions on the history and future of SCPA were presented: Stanley Jones presented "A Look Backwards: and Helen I. Glenn and Doris M. Steward presented "A Forward Look"
  • The first constitution and bylaws were adopted at the 1952 conference in Raleigh, NC and mention three standing committees: Nominating, Program, and Membership
  • SCPA officially changed its name to the Southern Association for College Student Affairs, commonly referred to as SACSA in 1982
  • The SACSA Foundation was established in 1990 to provide financial support for the mission and initiatives of the Association.
  • In 1969, a resolution was passed for a reduced conference rate for students. $5.00 was the initial graduate student membership rate.

5 Reasons Why You Should Give!

The SACSA foundation is making a strategic push to encourage members to consider giving throughout the year to support the countless programs offered by the Association. We know that there are numerous causes where you can direct your financial resources, so we wanted to give 5 reasons why you should consider including SACSA in your annual giving:

1. The SACSA Foundation provides financial support for our own members. (We support our own.)
  • With the current state of the economy and declining budgets at colleges and universities, it is sometimes difficult to secure funding for research. This is particularly true for folks who are relatively new to the profession and/or who have not been very involved in research in the past. The research awards funded by SACSA are awarded to SACSA members. Many of the past recipients have indicated that they would not have been able to complete their research without the support of the SACSA Foundation because there were no other funds they could access.
2. The research that is funded by Foundation money produces relevant, timely information that is useful to us in our daily activities. (We need to know now.)
  • Each year the research award recipients are chosen from a pool of applicants based on the relevance/importance of the research and the quality of the research proposal. The award recipients are required to make a conference presentation and/or submit a journal article by the end of the next year, which means that we see a quick "return on our investment". This information can then be used by SACSA members in their everyday activities.
3. Giving to the SACSA Foundation is a vote of confidence in your profession. (You can "vote" for your profession.)
  • We all "pick and choose" when it comes to donating our hard-earned money because there are many worthy causes. Our choices usually come down to what we value most. If we truly believe in our profession and value the multitude of ways that student affairs enhances the lives of students, then giving to our profession should be a "no brainer".
4. We need to "put our money where our mouth is".
  • We all hope that others at our institutions take us seriously and view Student Affairs professionals as partners in the educational process. One way to accomplish this is by increasing the research and scholarship conducted by Student Affairs professionals. The projects funded by the SACSA Foundation support this effort.
5. You may benefit directly from Foundation funding in the future. (It's all about you.)
  • While the major reason that most people donate to a cause are altruistic (they want to help others), donating to the SACSA Foundation may also individually and directly benefit you in the future if you decide that you would like to further your professional development by conducting research.  In addition, with increased contributions and support, the Foundation will be able to increase the types of professional development opportunities that can be provided to SACSA members. (i.e.  Student Affairs Administrator in Residence program, travel grants).

2007, when I received the Joe Buck Service Award... but, I would be remiss to not state that the SACSA Family has been both a personal and professional highlight, support structure, and great deal of enjoyment over the years.

Why Do You Give to the Foundation?
It is about giving back to the profession that has provided me (and my family) many opportunities and unwavering support throughout the years. Foundation gifts provide needed resources advancing the profession to truly maximize learning opportunities and support for colleagues and students. SACSA is a special organization, and a gift, regardless of its size, is an investment in the future of the organization and the staff/faculty who will shape the future of our students. It's the least I can do...
