RE-ENGAGE AND RE-DISCOVER YOUR CHURCH; NATIONAL REPRESENTATIVE ASSEMBLY CONVENES (Crossroads)

FRAMINGHAM, MA - The Eastern Prelacy's National Representative Assembly (NRA), hosted by St. Asdvadzadzin Church, Whitinsville, Massachusetts, convened this afternoon, May 16. The Clergy conference began yesterday. The theme of this year's Assembly is "Re-Engage and Re-Discover Your Church."

Concurrent with the Assembly, the annual conference of the National Association of Ladies Guilds (NALG) will take place. Elected to serve as chairmen of this year's Assembly were Aram Sarafian and Simone' Topouzian, and secretaries Der Torkom Chorbajian (Armenian) and Andrew Asadorian (English). Words of welcome were offered by Rev. Fr. Mikael Der Kosrofian, pastor of the host parish as well as by Raffi Samkiranian, chairman of the Board of Trustees. Rev. Fr. Aved Terzian, pastor of the Armenian Church of Our Saviour of Worcester, Massachusetts offered a message on behalf of Bishop Daniel Findikyan, Primate of the Armenian Church of America (Eastern).

In his keynote address Archbishop Anoushavan thanked the host community for undertaking the responsibility of hosting this year's Assembly.

In his address to the assembly, Archbishop Anoushavan spoke of challenges facing the church and said "these challenges will require serious discussion and follow up."

Life Size Game Kef Night
Reported by Mrs. Nyrie Halajian

On Friday, May 10th, the St. Sarkis Salt & Light Youth Group attended a Kef Nite at church. The youth were invited for an evening of entertainment which included delicious food, great Armenian music provided by DJ Harout K, and a variety of life-size games that were appealing to all ages. There were over 50 youth in attendance, from ages 10 to 16, who were laughing, dancing and playing games such as life-size Uno, Domino's, Connect Four, Bowling and more.

It was wonderful to see the comfort level that the youth has developed with each other and in our church, especially towards the end of the night when a large group of them, boys and girls included, turned on the TV to sit together and watch one of the NBA playoff games.

To wind down the night, Der Nareg spoke to the group in a fun Q&A session where they answered questions about Armenian History and the Armenian Church, which was then followed by a delicious Ice Cream Sundae Bar.

This event was put together with love by Der Nareg, Yeretsgeen Annie and the Salt & Light Youth Ministry Committee in appreciation for the commitment and active participation our youth have shown throughout the year in attending our sessions, the Mid Winter Sleepover and particularly their involvement in one of the Lenten Vesper Services and Holy Week.

We look forward to celebrating with the youth group families at our end of the year picnic, which will be held at Manorhaven Park in Port Washington on Friday, May 31st from 6-8pm.
ARS Walkathon
Reported by Miss Nevair Oranjian
On May 11th, the ARS "Erebouni" chapter of New York once again hosted their annual ARS Walk Armenia walkathon to help St. Sarkis Church purchase a new organ.

After weeks of crazy weather, we were blessed with sunshine making it a gorgeous day for a walk. The Ungerouhi's who attended that day walked from St. Sarkis Church in Douglaston to the Armenian Society Center in Little Neck, where they provided us with soft drinks and water.

We deeply appreciate their many years of support by providing us with the facility and hospitality. After walking 3.2 miles, the Ungerouhi's returned to St. Sarkis for celebratory pizza and a social hour.

We would like to thank all those who pledged for their ongoing support and helping us reach our goals.

The 3rd Annual Panel Discussion on Mental Health
Dear Parishioners:

On Sunday, June 2, after church services, St. Sarkis will host the 3rd Annual "Ways To Wellness: A Panel Discussion on Mental Health." This program on mental health has been a huge success each year.

The purpose of the discussion is to destigmatize mental health and illness and help our parishioners learn more about the importance of mental health.

Our panel discussion will again feature esteemed mental health practitioners with whom you are familiar: Yeraz Markarian, PhD a licensed clinical psychologist, Executive Director of Healthy Mind NY, where she provides individual and group therapy, family counseling and parenting skills, and Assistant Professor at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai; Hagop Gorgissian, MD an Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and an Adjunct Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, St. George University who also has a private practice in Queens; and Carlo Bayrakdarian, MD a geriatric psychiatrist who has a private practice throughout Westchester and in New York City and was a Clinical Instructor in Psychiatry at the Cornell University Medical Center.

We want to make sure the lecture meets the needs of our parishioners. To that end, if there is a topic you want covered, you can email [email protected]. All requests will be kept confidential.

Thank you and we look forward to hearing from you and to seeing you at the program on June 2.

Sincerely,
Fr. Nareg Terterian

THE FIRST EPISTLE OF ST. JOHN THE APOSTLE (1.1-10)
That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched-this we proclaim concerning the Word of life. The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us. We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. We write this to make our joy complete.
This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.
If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO JOHN (7.14-19)
Not until halfway through the Feast did Jesus go up to the temple courts and begin to teach. The Jews were amazed and asked, "How did this man get such learning without having studied?"
Jesus answered, "My teaching is not my own. It comes from him who sent me. If anyone chooses to do God's will, he will find out whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my own. He who speaks on his own does so to gain honor for himself, but he who works for the honor of the one who sent him is a man of truth; there is nothing false about him. Has not Moses given you the law? Yet not one of you keeps the law. Why are you trying to kill me?"

APPARITION OF THE HOLY CROSS
This Sunday (May 19) the Armenian Church commemorates the Feast of the Apparition of the Holy Cross (Yerevoumun Sourp Khatchi). The Apparition of the Cross is the first feast dedicated to the Holy Cross in the Armenian liturgical calendar. It is celebrated in remembrance of the appearance of the sign of the cross over the city of Jerusalem in 351 that remained in the sky for several hours. The apparition extended from Golgotha to the Mount of Olives (about two miles), and was brighter than the sun and was seen by everyone in Jerusalem. The Patriarch of Jerusalem, Cyril, used this occasion to remind Emperor Constantius of Byzantium of his father's (Constantine the Great) orthodox faith. Cyril claimed the Apparition was further reason to return to orthodoxy.

Traditionally, the Armenian translation of Cyril's message is read on this feast day during the Antastan service prior to the Gospel lection. The Apparition is celebrated by the Armenian and Greek churches. The Greeks observe it on the fixed date of May 7, while the Armenian date is moveable depending on the date of Easter. It is celebrated on the fifth Sunday of Easter.

Cyril is a revered Doctor of the Church and he is remembered in the Armenian Church's liturgical calendar. Here is a short excerpt from Cyril's letter about the apparition.

"In those holy days of the Easter season, on 7 May at about the third hour, a huge cross made of light appeared in the sky above holy Golgotha extending as far as the holy Mount of Olives. It was not revealed to one or two people alone, but it appeared unmistakably to everyone in the city. It was as if one might conclude that one had suffered a momentary optical illusion; it was visible to the human eye above the earth for several hours. The flashes it emitted outshone the rays of the sun, which would have outshone and obscured it themselves if it had not presented the watchers with a more powerful illumination than the sun. It prompted the whole populace at once to run together into the holy church, overcome both with fear and joy at the divine vision. Young and old, men and women of every age, even young girls confined to their rooms at home, natives and foreigners, Christians and pagans visiting from abroad, all together as if with a single voice raised a hymn of praise to God's Only-Begotten Son the wonder-worker. They had the evidence of their own senses that the holy faith of Christians is not based on the persuasive arguments of philosophy but on the revelation of the Spirit and power; it is not proclaimed by mere human beings but testified from heaven by God Himself."
