DCD Book Club The final book we'll be discussing this year is The Alchemist, by Paulo Coelho, on Monday, May 13, at 6:30 p.m. at the Herrick House.
"Combining magic, mysticism, wisdom and wonder into an inspiring tale of self-discovery,
The Alchemist has become a modern classic, selling millions of copies around the world and transforming the lives of countless readers across generations.
"Paulo Coelho's masterpiece tells the mystical story of Santiago, an Andalusian shepherd boy who yearns to travel in search of a worldly treasure. His quest will lead him to riches far different-and far more satisfying-than he ever imagined. Santiago's journey teaches us about the essential wisdom of listening to our hearts, of recognizing opportunity and learning to read the omens strewn along life's path, and, most importantly, to follow our dreams."

Rube Goldberg
When I was growing up, my grandmother would make a comment that someone was a real "Rube Goldberg." I knew that meant that the person was creative, inventive, and thought out of the box. Rube Goldberg was one of my grandmother's contemporaries, and I was so fortunate that she introduced me to this eccentric artist.
Today's readers can also learn about Rube in
Just Like Rube Goldberg: The Incredible True Story of the man Behind the Machines (Beach Lane Books) written by Sarah Aronson and illustrated by Robert Neubecker.

Join the Walk for Bleeding Disorders
Just 5 days after he was born, William Sousa Wagner, son of Laura Sousa Wagner (pictured together, left), strings instructor and chamber orchestra coach at DCD, was diagnosed with severe hemophilia type A. This rare genetic disorder for which there is no cure prevents blood from clotting and can cause heavy and prolonged bleeding into muscles, joints, or other organs. Bleeding can occur either spontaneously or after an injury. Treatment for hemophilia involves injecting clotting factor intravenously after a bleed or on a regular basis as prophylaxis - a treatment that can cost on average more than $270,000 annually.
On
June 8, the New England Hemophilia Association (NEHA) is hosting a walk for bleeding disorders at Prowse Farm in Canton, MA from 10am-2pm. This family friendly event
will feature live performers, breakfast, a BBQ lunch, petting zoo, ice cream, inflatable obstacle courses, games, face painters, and even the Red Sox Showcase and the New England Revolution street team! Mrs. Sousa Wagner has formed a walk team comprised of family and friends, and wishes to extend the invitation to the DCD community to join their walk team. This walk is one of the biggest fundraisers of the year for NEHA, and helps the organization
fulfill our mission to improve the quality of life for New England families living with a bleeding disorder through education, support and advocacy.
If your family would like to join the team, make a contribution to support their team (Liam's Sole Mates), or read more about their story, please visit

Linda Cabot, a former DCD parent (Gigi Anderson '08 and Noelle Anderson '10), has created an organization named
Bow Seat Ocean Awareness Programs whose mission is to "activate the next wave of ocean leaders through the arts, science, and advocacy." Part of this process includes a contest for middle and high school students who are interested in advocating for and preserving the world's oceans.
Middle school English teacher Rick Edie served as a judge last summer for essays submitted by middle and high school students from around the country and the world, and enjoyed reading the entries from so many amazing and passionate students. He is encouraging any DCD student aged 11-14 to enter the Junior Division competition! Submissions are accepted in visual art, poetry, prose, film, and music, so there are numerous ways for students to show their passion and interest in the ocean.
The deadline for submissions is June 17.
More information on the Ocean Awareness Contest (including this year's theme and the awards) may be found
here
, and for inspiration the 2018 winning entries in all categories may be found
here
. Please contact Mr. Edie if you have any questions or want help with a project!
