Say NO to C onspiracy Theories

A group of 27 public health scientists from 8 countries have signed an “open letter” in the Lancet journals to support scientists, public health and medical professionals of China fighting the outbreak of COVID-19 and to roundly condemn conspiracy theories surrounding it.

Facts & Updates

As of midnight on Feb 18 (Beijing Time), t here still remained 57,805 confirmed cases (including 11,977 in serious condition) on the Chinese mainland. China's National Health Commission (NHC) had in total received 74,185 reports of COVID-19 confirmed cases and 2,004 deaths. 14,376 patients had been cured and discharged from hospital.

A total of 56 new confirmed cases were reported outside Hubei, a 15th consecutive day drop since Feb.3.

China's daily number of newly recovered patients has surpassed that of new confirmed infections for the first time on Feb 18, with 1,824 people walk out of hospital after recovery, higher than the same day's 1,749 new confirmed infections.

Eight province-level regions on Chinese mainland reported zero new infections on Feb 18, including Shanghai, Hainan, Qinghai, Guizhou, Xizang(Tibet), Xinjiang, Liaoning and Gansu.

Report on the epidemiological characteristics of COVID-19 outbreak

China's CDC Weekly published a paper with detailed data on more than 44,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19, which provides a better understanding about the age range of people affected, the severity of their diseases and the mortality rate ( cl ick here to find the full report)

Among confirmed cases, 86.6% were aged 30–79.
More than 80% of patients have a mild form of the disease and will recover.
In about 14% of the cases, the virus results in a serious condition. About 5% of the patients have a critical form, such as respiratory failure and multiple organ failure.
In 2% of the reported cases, the virus is fatal, and the risk of that increases with age.

Measures to restrict people's movement in China amid the COVID-19 outbreak are a "correct strategic, tactical approach"

Dr. Michael Ryan , executive director of the WHO Health Emergencies Program.

"What China is trying to do is while they're getting success and pulling out one fire, they don't want the fire to start somewhere else. They're taking very directed measures to ensure the people returning to the city are observed and monitored."

"There's an awful lot at stake here, in terms of public health, and in terms of not only the public health of China but of all people in the world. Right now, the strategic and tactical approach in China is the correct one."
