Dr. Sally Graglia, Assistant Clinical Professor of Emergency Medicine; and Dr. Bryan Darger, PGY-4, were awarded the Outstanding Medical Student Educator Awards for the 2018-2019 academic year.
With our colleagues in the Department of Neurology, the Department of Emergency Medicine is pleased to announce the acquisition of a large grant to serve as a site for the Brain Oxygen Optimization in Severe TBI (BOOST3) Phase 3 trial -- a randomized clinical trial to determine the comparative effectiveness of two strategies for monitoring and treating patients with traumatic brain injury in the ICU. The study will determine the safety and efficacy of a strategy guided by treatment goals based on both intracranial pressure (ICP) and brain tissue oxygen (PbtO2) as compared to a strategy guided by treatment goals based on ICP monitoring alone. The DEM looks forward to involvement in other trials as a subhub in the SIREN (Strategies to Innovate EmeRgENcy Care) Clinical Trials Network funded by the National Institute for Neurological Disorders and Stroke, the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute and the National Center for Advancing Translational Science. We'd like to recognize Dr. Rob Rodriguez for serving as our departmental lead for the SIREN network and for being instrumental in advancing collaboration with the Department of Neurology to move this important work forward.

donated $1M to support the ZSFG Social Medicine Team, led by Dr. Hemal Kanzaria, Associate Clinical Professor of Emergency Medicine, to enhance the services available to ZSFG Emergency Department patients and expand the efforts to Psychiatric Emergency Services (PES).

Dr. Guy Shochat, Associate Clinical Professor of Emergency Medicine, completed a longstanding project to replace and update the supply of CMAC video laryngoscopes at Parnassus. Funding was acquired for all new CMACs and two new flexible scopes. New tracking protocols were developed with Sterile Processing to more efficiently clean and rapidly return these new tools. It was all packaged into new carts ensuring easy access to airway tools and mobility to take the tools to the bedside.

Dr. Louis Yu
, PGY-4, presented an abstract, ""Aortic Injury in the Era of the Pan-scan" at the plenary session at SAEM in Las Vegas, NV on May 14th. Dr. Yu also had a clinical image accepted for SAEM titled "Hip Trick," which reviews ultrasound usage to identify ASIS avulsion fractures in pediatrics.
Dr. Tiffany Cobb and Dr. Tomas Diaz, PGY-4, led a workshop ("Evaluation of the Trauma Patient: E-FAST") at SNMA's Annual Medical Education Conference. Dr. Cortlyn Brown, PGY-3, and Dr. Tomas Diaz, PGY-4, represented UCSF Graduate Medical Education at the conference's exhibitor fair.

/JEM Resident and Student research competition. This competition was designed to recognize outstanding research achievements by residents and students in emergency medicine. She was also elected back
to the national board of the Student National Medical Association which is the largest student run group focused on the needs of minority medical school students with over 7000 members. I was just elected to their Strategic Planning Council.

, Associate Clinical Professor of Emergency Medicine, hosted the 3rd annual CME Conference "Building a Career in Global Emergency Care" on April 4-5th that brought in participants and speakers from across the country including presentations from many of our own faculty, including Drs. Starr Knight, Corey Bills, Nick Glomb, Kayla Enriquez, Kavita Ghandi, and Joe Brown as well as EM residency alumnus Sean Kivlehan.
Dr. Andi Tenner, Associate Clinical Professor of Emergency Medicine, Dr. Carol Chen, Professor of Clinical Emergency Medicine, and EM residency alumnus Dr. Sean Kivlehan held the first WHO/ICRC Basic Emergency Care Training of Trainers Course in the US on April 6-7th at Mission Hall. Thirty-four doctors, nurses, NPs, PAs, and pharmacists from across the country were trained, including Drs. Kavita Ghandi, Sally Graglia, and Scott Fruhan as well as several nurses, NPs, and pharmacists from ZSFG and Parnassus.

Robin Kemball
joined our DEM Administration team and serves as our Research Manager. She comes to UCSF DEM with over 15 years of experience in many different aspects of clinical research administration. She was most recently with Science 37, where she served as the Director of Quality and Compliance for Clinical Operations. After receiving her master's degree in public health from Emory University, Robin went on to work at the Emory University Center for Injury Control as a study coordinator. She then relocated to California starting at the University of California San Diego then transitioned to the University of California Los Angeles where she was a regulatory manager in the Jonsson Compressive Cancer Center for over 5 years. She is passionate about providing access to clinical research to all members of the population despite economic or geographic barriers.

Rachel Wolf joined our DEM Administration team and serves as our Executive Assistant to the Chair. Rachel grew up in the Castro and has been living in the Richmond District for over 25 years. She has worked in non-profit for over 20 years, including the California Academy of Sciences and, most recently, Calvary Presbyterian Church. Rachel was born with a strong love of animals and currently shares her life with two cats, Diego and Nola. During free time, she enjoys photography, kayaking, and visiting New Orleans whenever possible. Rachel is excited to begin this new chapter with UCSF, continuing to contribute her experience to the greater good.

Kim Smith joined our DEM Administration team and serves as our Clinical Scheduler. Kim graduated from California State University, East Bay with a BA in Psychology and shortly thereafter began her career with UCSF. Over the past 6 years, Kim has served in various capacities throughout the Division of Pediatric Radiology, steadily expanding, honing and enhancing her skillset. Outside of work, Kim loves to travel, read, practice yoga, and visit new and local bay area wineries. She is excited for this new chapter in her professional career and looks forward to applying her strong work knowledge of UCSF towards her new role. |
