"What Would You Like To Do?"
The Question to Ask for Community Integration
Getting involved in one's community usually begins with simple questions about the person's interests, desires, goals or strengths. Sally Harpold, a program specialist atDevelopment Enterprises Corporation (DEC) in Norristown, says she usually starts by asking program participants a simple question: "What would you like to do?" The varied responses, Harpold noted, have led them in a number of directions and created new opportunities.
DEC is a provider of vocational and rehabilitation services for individuals with intellectual disability. Among the many ways their participants integrate in their communities are volunteering in local soup kitchens and active older adult centers, to visiting the local libraries and taking a cooking class at Pottstown Hospital, pictured below. Harpold said a person on their staff had connections with the hospital cafeteria and reached out to the chef to ask about a cooking class. Photos of the class are courtesy of Tammie Reimer, DEC Director.
