Hello volunteers, and welcome to Term 2 of our Spring quarter! We are continuing with our center-wide class theme this quarter on health. Last term, we were lucky enough to work with Hunger Intervention Program who facilitated a fabulous Cooking Matters elective for our students. The class involved meaningful discussions on nutrition, reading food labels, an interactive project at the grocery store, and cooking meals together during each class. This quarter, we look forward to hosting a health fair at our learning center, with representatives from Komen Foundation, Bastyr University, Neighborcare Health, Seattle-King County Aging & Disability Services, North Seattle Family Center, and more. Special thanks to ESOL 1 volunteer teachers Cynthia Putnam and Linda Pye, who are helping coordinate the event.
We've also been celebrating Teacher Appreciation Week. Our students spearheaded an initiative to dedicate the first week of the term to thanking the many volunteer and staff teachers here at Literacy Source. Many of you have seen the lovely display created by students in our reception area this past week. As the sign at the entrance of our center reads:

Thanks to all who came out and helped make our 17
th Annual Breakfast a huge success! Our three student speakers, Rita, Woudalat, and Javier, did an amazing job delivering powerful speeches to our 300-person audience. We also got to enjoy an inspiring welcome from our new Executive Director, Eileen Aparis, and Nancy Pearl's famous book recommendations from the year. We raised a grand total of $153,577, with an additional $2,820 in online donations coming in from GiveBIG the following day. We continue to be humbled by the generosity of our community in supporting our vision of education, equity, and opportunity for all!

Ramadan began on Sunday, May 5. In fostering an inclusive community at Literacy Source, it is important for non-Muslims to be aware of some of the religious traditions our students, staff, and volunteers might be celebrating. Our colleagues at Shoreline Community College recently shared the following highlights that we thought we'd pass along:
- "Ramadan Mubarak" or "Ramadan Kareem" are common greetings
- The Dhuhr (high noon) prayer begins a little after 1 pm each day - avoid scheduling meetings between 1-1:30 pm, or explicitly allow a 15-minute break to all in attendance at that time
- Fasting each day is between dawn to sunset and includes water. Please remember to avoid inconsiderate comments about your perceived feelings or emotions related to individuals' fasting or not fasting choices
- Remember that every person celebrating Ramadan may do so differently; don't inflict or assume your perceptions of the holiday or what your other friends celebrating Ramadan might do

Community Volunteer Training Materials

Thanks to all of you who came to the Community Volunteer Training (CVT) at Seattle Goodwill on Saturday, May 4. We had a great turnout of 110 worthy volunteers, like yourselves, who are either tutoring or wanting to tutor adult learners in King County. If you missed the training, here is a link to the presentations and resources. The next CVT will be on Saturday, September 21, 2019 at the Seattle Central Public Library.

We'd like to extend an invitation to visit an art exhibit curated by Literacy Source's long-time Fremont Talk Time attendee Roberta (Yi-Ping) Chen, titled "The United States in My Eyes." The show features works that examine reconciling the artists' previous visions of America with their current experiences of adapting to the United States. Admission is free.

A group of Library Science Masters Degree students from the University of Washington are helping us re-organize our library system based on feedback they gathered from students, staff, and volunteers.
|
We are currently in need of a few volunteers to assist former AmeriCorps member Amanda Chin and a group of students from the Library Science Masters program of the University of Washington. The project involves stickering the books in Literacy Source's library using a new color coding system the group has developed as part of their capstone project. This volunteer opportunity will take place on
