"A Novel Idea" 2018 is in Full Swing!
A Novel Idea 2018 kicked off this weekend with some great programming! We got an overview of the book from Professor of English Stacey Donohue; Jaspreet Arora taught us about the history of Bollywood films and the dance workout BollyX; we studied Hinduism 101 with Reed College professor Kristin Scheible; and learned about traditional Indian cooking with Runi Srikantaiah at Mantra Indian Kitchen. And there's much more to come! Be sure to pick up a Readers Guide at your library, or visit our website  to learn about all of the upcoming A Novel Idea programs. Free tickets to author Rakesh Satyal's May 6 talk at Bend High will be available online and in libraries beginning on April 21 at 10:00 a.m.
Join us at the Redmond and Downtown Bend Libraries for El Día de los Niños
Join us for El día de los niños/El día de los libros (Children's Day/Book Day). Commonly known as Día, this annual nation-wide celebration emphasizes the importance of literacy for children of all linguistic and cultural backgrounds. You'll find fun booths offering games and crafts promoting cultural experiences as well as snacks, books, prizes, and cotton candy. Mark your calendars:
- Redmond Library | April 24, 5:00-7:30 p.m.
- Downtown Bend Library | April 30, 5:00-7:00 p.m.
Picture Book Reorganization Now Complete
Our reorganization of children's picture books is now complete in all libraries! It was a big undertaking, but the result is picture book sections that are more child-friendly than ever. Books are now  grouped by topic (pets, dinosaurs, things that go, make believe, etc.), which makes them easier for our young friends to find. The response has been great. One customer said, "I went to the East Bend library today and was able to use the new system. It is amazing!! It was so easy to find books my two three year olds will love. It was also a bit easier to engage them in the process. Thank you for doing this!"
Speaking of Picture Books...
Did you know that a  child who enters kindergarten with a strong vocabulary, a love of books, and a familiarity with playing with words, has a definite advantage? You can help develop those skills! Experts agree that talking, singing, reading, writing and playing with young children will prepare them for learning how to read. We offer dozens of fun, free storytimes and children's programs each month that will help you raise a reader. Find the full schedule here. We'll see you at storytime!
Rajneeshpuram Revisited
Revisit the history and controversy of Rajneeshpuram and Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh.  In October 1985, a four-year effort to construct a utopia in Wasco County collapsed in a flurry of criminal charges and arrests of its leaders, including Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh. Rajneeshpuram once housed or hosted as many as 15,000 followers of the Bhagwan. What ended the city so soon? Hostility from other Oregonians? Legal entanglements? A flawed business model? The failures of its leaders and residents? This April 25 presentation at the East Bend Library from Carl Abbot seeks to understand how an effort that was positive for thousands of individuals failed so spectacularly as a community.
