Richard Conrath Signs Cooper's Moon:
Saturday, June 23 at 1 PM

Richard Conrath is a former Catholic priest who left to teach philosophy in a small college while freelancing for papers like the "Cleveland Plain Dealer" and "Sunday Magazine"
Today he lives with his wife in south Florida and enjoys the peace that comes with the sun, the sand, and the slower pace set by island time.
Cooper's Moon is his first book.
Cooper's Moon
No parent wants to lose a child. No parent wants to outlive her child. And when that happens, well, it's like getting hit by lightning on a perfect day, a sunny day. And that's what happened to Cooper and his wife, Jillie. And that single devastating incident changes their lives forever.

Book Reviews
The Death of Mrs. Westaway
By Ruth Ware
Reviewed by Cheryl Kravetz
Harriet "Hal" Westaway is living day-to-day, reading Tarot cards on the Brighton Pier, barely making ends meet. She is behind with her rent payment, chased by a loan shark, when she receives a letter from a solicitor saying her grandmother has died and she is a beneficiary of her substantial estate. But, her grandmother is dead and she has no family. At least no family that she knows of.
Hal has been on her own since her mother died three years ago, just days before her 18th birthday. She never knew her grandparents who have been dead for over twenty years. She is not aware of any other family, but then her mother was a bit secretive. As she reads the letter she knows that even though it bears her name, it is not meant for her, but she wonders what would happen if she played along and responded to the claim that she is the granddaughter of Hester Mary Westaway of Trepassen House, St. Piran. She certainly could use the money. So she contacts the solicitor.
She scrapes together enough money to board a train to Penzance where she takes a taxi to St. Piran, arriving just in time for the funeral. She meets the solicitor who escorts her to Trepassen House where she meets children and grandchildren of Mrs. Westaway. It is a large, old house of secrets, secrets soon to be unburied.
The Death of Mrs. Westaway is true to Ruth Ware's style of suspense, surprises and twists and turns. I have read her previous three books, which were all masterfully crafted, but I had an especially hard time putting this one down. The Death of Mrs. Westaway is an unforgettable story told by a remarkably talented author.

Our Kind of Cruelty
By Araminta Hall
Reviewed by Sue Wilder
Mike Hayes and Verity Metcalf are a couple bound together by their sexual obsession. Mike, abandoned and abused as a child, believes Verity loves him. He is professionally successful, good-looking, and wealthy. Everything he does is with an eye to pleasing Verity.
They have created a game called Crave whereby Verity flirts with a stranger and when she gives Mike a signal that she's had enough, Mike steps in and "rescues" her. An incredible work opportunity causes Mike to live in America while Verity stays in London.
When Mike returns to London he discovers that Verity is continuing their separation. In fact, she sends him an invitation to her wedding to Angus. Mike believes that Verity is raising the ante in their game of Crave and wants him to rescue her from Angus. Is this reality or delusion?
The tension increases as Verity keeps pushing Mike away and Mike continues to believe that Verity wants him to rescue her. He is just waiting for a "secret" sign from her. The story walks the tightrope between love and obsession.
Our Kind of Cruelty is a psychological thriller related by an unreliable narrator.   The book is unique in that the delusional narrator is the male instead of the female. Most truth vs. perception thrillers during the past few years have been told from the "in trouble" female point of view.
Our Kind of Cruelty is well written with a suspense trajectory that never lets up. Highly recommended for fans of Gillian Flynn, A. J. Finn and Peter Swanson. Reader challenge: is your reaction to the characters any different because the "in distress" character is Mike instead of Verity?

A Death of No Importance
By Mariah Fredericks
Reviewed by Stephanie Saxon Levine
Set in New York City, 1910,
A Death of No Importance is a compelling historical mystery as seen through the eyes of Jane Prescott, a ladies' maid to the city's privileged families. When she takes a position with the Benchley family, who are scorned by the city's elite as "new money", Jane realizes that while she may not have privilege, she has power born of her understanding of the rules of high society. The Benchleys cause further outrage when their daughter Charlotte becomes engaged to notorious playboy Norrie, the son of the eminent Newsome family.
Then, Norrie is found murdered at a party. Jane discovers she has the tools to solve his murder. There are many persons of interest from whom to choose: from the family Norrie was supposed to marry into, to the survivors of a tragic accident in a mine owned by the Newsomes, to the rising anarchists who are sick of those born into wealth getting away with anything they want. Jane also knows that in both high society and the city's underbelly, morals can become cheap in the wrong hands: scandal and violence simmer just beneath the surface, ready to boil over at any time.
As Jane works her way through the tangled web of clues to the solution, Mariah Fredericks treats readers to a fast paced, thoroughly engaging tale, one which interweaves historical events with a convincing fictional cast and plot. The reader is carried back in time to a New York City on the verge of great changes, many of which are manifested in A Death of No Importance.
Readers who favor historical mysteries, this one is made for you.
