Spotlight on Aging describes the ways in which Ashby Village members support one another in remaining active and independent while living at home, and the volunteer program that helps with that support. It describes the goals of our village: in addition to assistance with physical and emotional health, Ashby Village seeks to foster continuous learning, social connection, and maintaining a sense of purpose. North Berkeley Neighborhood Cultural Events Group

Some members of the North Berkeley Neighborhood Group like attending concerts, movies and civic events, and find these occasions even more enjoyable in the company of others, so they formed an interest group called Cultural Events.

Members and friends at the recent Taste of North Berkeley Walk

The way the group works, a member finds an event (s)he would like to attend and an email is sent to the whole group with details of the event, perhaps including travel arrangements and dinner/lunch possibilities. Members who would like to accompany the initiator respond and a group is formed. Last year seven groups attended events that included a Bergman film at BPFA, the Wine Walk in the Gourmet Ghetto and Bach's B minor Mass.

Barbara Bull
1931 - 2018

Barbara was a quiet, helpful presence at many Ashby Village Events. We shall miss her warm smile and her willingness to try new things and help with existing tasks.

Her daughter, Nina, sent the following to Ashby Village:
"Thank you all for being such a big part of her life these last few years. I'm only sorry I didn't get to meet you all in person."

Barbara was a lung cancer survivor; the same cancer that took her husband a few years ago. Following his death, Barbara came to Ashby Village for community. From Nina's message it seems that she found her community. --The Hamlet Neighborhood Group.
Thank you to all Ashby Village volunteers who contribute to the Village Voices newsletter: Richard Bermack, Charli Depner, Nancy Rubin, Cynthia Overbeck Bix, Gert Weil, Steve Scholl, Karin Evans, Lincoln Spector
