A Message from the
Superintendent
|
I hope you are having a great week and enjoying today's springlike weather. We are in the time of the year when we are preparing for the 2018-2019 school year, but still have about 6 weeks left to finish out this school year. Please remind your kids to finish strong.

I occasionally take the opportunity to provide information when I hear a rumor is floating around which lacks accuracy. I have two for you today.
Rumor:
Lovejoy ISD does not have the funds to pay our teachers and is having to borrow money to meet payroll.
Fact:
The 2017-2018 budget is fully funded as passed by our Board of Trustees on June 21, 2017. It is blatantly false that the district is having to secure a loan in order to meet any portion of our budget. I cannot imagine where this one originated.
Rumor:
The elementary campus campouts were created with one purpose in mind - to raise money for LISD.
Fact:
The primary purpose of the Campus Campout is to create a fun and memorable experience for our kids and their families. At the end of the day, my criteria for success will be measured by the enjoyment our kids and families experienced as a result of the event. We will survey participants to determine what changes will be made for next year and/or whether we will continue with this activity.

This spring we are implementing a new activity, Campus Campouts, on all 3 of our elementary campuses. The purpose of the Campus Campouts is primarily to create a fun and memorable experience for our kids and their families. In addition, we have taken the opportunity to generate some additional revenue for both the campus and the school district to help offset the loss of state funds.
The Campouts include numerous activities including bounce houses, glow parties, movies under the stars, and much more. The grand finale of the evening is a campout on the playgrounds.
Lovejoy Elementary School hosted its inaugural campout this past Friday. The event was a great success.

Hart Elementary School - Friday, April 20th
Puster Elementary School - Friday, April 27th
We are anticipating all campers to be in their tents by 11:00 PM. We value our neighbors and are sharing this information to prepare you for the evening activities and tents on the playgrounds.

Lovejoy Bowler Earns
Team State Championship
|
The All-District State Tournament was recently held in College Station. LHS Sophomore, Noah Cooper, qualified to participate on the Dallas North A District team, along with 7 other bowlers from Plano Senior, Plano East, Allen, Wylie, and Berkner High Schools.
Noah bowled in the singles portion of the tournament, helping the team qualify for bracket play by making it to 7th out of 26 teams.
After advancing to bracket play, the boys bowled in a Baker format (each member of the team bowls 2 frames in a game) where the best 2 out of 3 games wins. In the quarter-finals, they bowled against the number 2 ranked team, San Antonio NorthEast 1, beating them 2 out of 3 games. They then advanced to the semi-finals round to bowl against the number 6 ranked team, Central Texas, beating them in just 2 games. The boys then advanced to the final round to bowl against the number 4 ranked team, San Antonio North 1. Our boys struggled the first game and lost 149-193. The boys rallied and came back to win the second game 176-157. The championship came down to the last and final game, where the boys came back strong and won the last game 195-160. Congratulations to the new the All-District State Champions.

Lovejoy Ice Hockey Secures
Academic Honors
|
The Lovejoy Varsity ice hockey team, which plays in the AT&T Metroplex High School Hockey League, is proud to announce five players received All-Academic Honors from the league. Based on GPA, class rigor, and community service, the league, along with the Dallas Stars, awards fewer than 10% of the more than 500 varsity players with this honor. Congratulations to juniors Ryan Raineri, Andy Pottinger, Matthew McLaren, Cyrus Mortazavi, and senior Quentin Liles for your outstanding work both on the ice and in the classroom.

Early voting for the May 5th school board election will begin on Monday, April 23rd. The terms expiring in 2018 are Place 6 and Place 7.  Teacher Professional Learning and District Calendar
Dear Lovejoy Community:
It is nice that we are beginning to experience some warmer April weather. Today is the last early release day for this school year. The focus of the professional learning of our teachers continues to be on the strategies to support effective formative assessment. The professional educator definition of formative assessment is "the formal and informal processes teachers and students use to gather evidence for the purpose of informing the next steps in learning." In plain English, it is the strategies teachers use to determine what students know and do not know. It is the work teachers do in the classroom on a frequent basis to help students monitor and set goals around what they know and do not know until they reach mastery of the required learning. Some past, familiar examples of formative assessment may be found in athletics or fine arts classes.
Good coaches have always been able to make the expectations for each player very clear (the learning target), identify where each player was in his implementation of that learning target, provide explicit feedback about which components of the expectation were being done well and which needed improvement, and provide specific feedback and coaching as to how to improve each component of the player's performance in order to reach a mastery level. Good players are able to internalize the expectation, act on feedback, set goals, and monitor their own progress toward mastery. This is the process for learning which we want to occur in all classrooms and in all subject areas. Formative assessment strategies are research-based, and have one of the most significant positive impacts on learning. Wiliam and Black (1998) published the cornerstone of the research on formative assessment.
We are excited by the work of our teachers as they continue to learn and grow. As with all professional development, our goal is to improve the learning experiences for each student in Lovejoy ISD.
Tonight our School Board Trustees will be asked to approve changes to the 2018-2019 District Calendar. The 2018-2019 Calendar has a few unique components in relation to teacher professional learning opportunities. Rather than having three early release days for teacher professional development, the proposed calendar will have two early release days for professional learning (September 28 and February 14). In addition, there will be one full day of professional learning for all K-12 teachers on October 26. Lastly, there are three days in which K-8 students and teachers will have a regular school day and students in grades 9-12 will not have school so that LHS teachers can participate in additional professional development. These LHS only professional development days will be October 17, January 7, and March 20. These three days are after the conclusion of a grading period and will allow teachers to participate in professional learning and make needed adjustments to their curriculum for the upcoming grading period. We are looking forward to this new structure in our school district calendar to best support teacher growth and student learning.

WSMS Band
Congratulations to the Willow Springs Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble for their performance in the Director's Choice Music Festival at The Colony High School on Saturday, April 14th.
The Willow Springs Symphonic Band, under the direction of Lindsay Abbott, received First Division Superior ratings from all three judges, and was awarded Best in Class as the most outstanding, non-varsity middle school band of the contest.
The Willow Springs Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Marty Ball, received First Division Superior ratings from all three judges, was awarded Best in Class from all middle school varsity bands, and was named Overall Outstanding Middle School Band.

Majestics Spring Show
April 19th - 21st
The Lovejoy High School Majestics will present their Spring Show Architect of the Mind April 19th - 21st. The show will focus on the various things human beings can build. Whether it is constructing relationships, building self-confidence, or physically creating something tangible, there is a dance to highlight that process. The Majestics are proud to share the stage with the LHS Choir and LHS Orchestra and there will be a few surprises. Lovejoy Baseball
The Varsity Leopards had a dramatic walk-off home run by Luke Stein to defeat the North Forney Falcons 14-13 at Leopard Park this past Thursday night. The Dallas Morning News recognized Luke as their baseball player of the week. You may

The Leopards followed the victory with an 18-13 victory over North Forney to close out their series. The team took on the Pirates of Mesquite Poteet last night and lost a tough game 10-9. The Leopards will close out this series on Friday night at Leopard Park. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:30 PM.
The JV Red Team defeated the Pirates 9-0 and will close out its series with the Pirates this Friday at Leopard Park. The JV Red team will travel to McKinney High School to take on the Lions on Saturday, April 21st at 11:00 AM.
The JV Black team played a double header on Monday against the Poteet Pirates. The Leopards lost the first game 4-3 and then finished the second game with a 6-6 tie. The JV Black team will travel to Royse City on Monday, April 23rd to complete its 2018 15-5A District schedule.

Lovejoy Golf
Jay Pabin
and Allie Bianchi have been preparing for the UIL Regional Tournament, taking place next Monday through Thursday at the Rockwall Golf Club. Jay will participate in the Boys Regional Tournament on Monday and Tuesday, while Allie will participate in the Girls Regional Tournament on Wednesday and Thursday. We wish both golfers the best of luck.

Lovejoy Softball
The Lovejoy Lady Leopards Softball team hosted the Wylie East Lady Raiders this past Friday night at Leopard Park. The game was canceled in the 2nd inning due to lightning in the area, but resumed on Monday, April 16th with the Lady Leopards pulling out a dramatic win in the bottom of the 7th inning 4-3. This past Saturday, the Lady Leopards traveled to North Forney to take on the Lady Falcons in a 15-5A contest and defeated the Lady Falcons 11-8. Last night, the team suffered a tough loss, 18-8, to the Mesquite Lady Pirates. The Varsity team will close out its regular season schedule this Friday in Royse City against the Lady Bulldogs and will advance to the UIL State Playoffs.
The JV Leopards lost to the North Forney Lady Falcons on Saturday 9-6, but then returned to Leopard Park last night to defeat the Mesquite Lady Pirates 11-5. The JV team will close its 2018 season this Friday in Royse City.

Safety and Security
Safety and security remain our highest priorities. We have specific plans at each campus in response to a security breach. We continue to consider additional measures to address both the perception of safety, as well as the actual safety on every campus.
We would like to ask for your assistance. If you have information about a threat to the safety of a student, staff member, campus, or the district, we ask you to report it.
SafeSchools is our online safety compliance program, which is specifically designed for school use, incident management, and bullying reporting. This program allows students, staff, and parents to report tips on bullying, harassment, intimidation, weapons, drugs, or other threats to school safety by e-mail, via website, text, or by calling 469.919.5861. This system allows us to stay connected and to prevent incidents before they occur. Staff are immediately notified of every tip, and can effectively track and manage incidents to resolution in this web-based system. Multiple administrators throughout the district monitor submissions to assure entries are addressed in a timely manner. Once a tip is entered, tipsters can easily check on the status of their tip and remain anonymous. School officials are notified through e-mail when tips are created and/or updated.
Posters are displayed in every classroom and hallways throughout each of the Lovejoy campuses, providing information as to how to enter a tip.
If you have information about a threat to our safety, do your part and report it. Please remember, you may remain anonymous.

The Lovejoy Running Club meets every Tuesday and Thursday evening at 6:00 PM near the Duck Pond at Celebration Park. Puster, Hart and Lovejoy Elementary Visual Arts Departments invite you to attend the Annual Lovejoy Visual Arts (LJVA) Elementary Spotlight Exhibition on display in the Lovejoy High School Art Gallery from April 24th through May 8th. LHS Color Guard Auditions
Open auditions for female and male students interested in joining the award winning Lovejoy Guard performance ensemble will be held April 30th - May 3rd in the LHS Fine Arts Dance Studio from 5:00 - 7:00 PM. Treasured Vessels Foundation
May 10th
The Treasured Vessels Foundation (TVF) is a local, non-profit which assists adolescent girls who have been recovered from domestic sex trafficking. TVF is building a secure community of tiny homes which will provide 24/7 therapeutic programing, with an emphasis in trauma-specific care. The program provides the tools these children need to develop a vision for a new, healthy, happy, and independent life.
