Nathanael '19 & Ezriel '17 Vinar
Make TABC Proud at
Chidon HaTanach Competitions
The brothers Vinar are making their family and TABC quite proud this week!

Having finished  in the top 16 in the international Chidon in Israel last week, senior Nathanael competed in the International Chidon HaTanach on Yom Ha'Atzmaut. Nathanel came in 6th place in this highly competitive contest.
In the past Sunday's Chidon US finals, Ezriel Vinar '21 came in second place, qualifying for next year's International Chidon Tanach in Israel.

For three out of the last four years TABC has been thrilled send a representative to the International Chidon HaTanach, and we're not done yet! Go Chidon at TABC!!

Yom Ha'Atzmaut at TABC
Yom Ha'atzmaut was a very special day in TABC. The day started with the students gathering together for one minyan. Right before Hallel Rabbi Yablok addressed everyone discussing how the creation the State of Israel should open up our eyes to realize the miracles around us. We then had a very spirited Hallel, led by senior Ben Antosofsky. Ben's beautiful voice and melodies had the room singing and dancing as we said Hallel together. After davening, students enjoyed blue and white Dunkin' Donuts.

For the next part of the program, students made their way upstairs to the Beit Knesset. Rav Yitz introduced the idea behind the next portion of the program, with six speakers, each talking for a few minutes about different aspects of the State of Israel. You could hear the passion from each of the presenters as they discussed Israel Advocacy, the IDF, Torah learning, religious Zionism, and the Tech Boom that has taken place.

Former IDF member and TABC teacher Mr. Tzach Yoked explained to us what it means to live in a country where everyone is in it together and explained the close bond that exists among all Israelis. Rabbi Michael Hoenig gave over some astounding numbers as to how much Torah is being learnt in Israel. Rabbi Raphi Mandelstam explained how Zionism needs religion in order to be real and how we should all live with that everyday. Dr. Elliot Prager and Ezra Seplowitz, President of Israel Advocacy club, discussed what our role should be in making a difference in Israel, even though we aren't living there yet. Mr. Aryeh Tiefenbrunn explained the success of the tech boom in Israel by explaining how the bond formed by Israelis who have the shared experience of going through the IDF creates a culture of being willing to take risks together and entrepreneurship. Rabbi Adler ended the program by imploring the students to rise to the occasion and owning the responsibility of caring and sacrificing for the Medinah. He talked proudly about all the TABC Alumni who have served and are serving in the IDF or have made aliyah. After Rabbi Adler concluded we sang Hatikva and everyone was dismissed to a festive lunch.

The gym was set up with tables and chairs, blue and white tablecloths and flags hanging on the walls. Israeli music playing and a delicious Israeli menu filled the students' plates. After a big meal, including blue and white cookies, dancing broke out and you could feel the joy in the air. Chag Sameach! Click here for more photos.

TABC Students Are Winners in the Fritz Ascher Society
High School Competition
The students in Mrs. Reichardt's Holocaust Studies course participated in a competition for high school students throughout the nation, which was organized by the Fritz Ascher Society for Persecuted, Ostracized and Banned Art. Inc. The students were asked to submit an essay, a poem, or artwork that reacted to Fritz Ascher's art or life. The winners of the contest received cash prizes and were celebrated at an awards ceremony and reception which took place on the evening of May 2, 2019 in New York City, where all submissions to the contest were exhibited. Aharon Weiden was a winner in the essay category, Avinoam Wizman won in the poetry category and Raphael Press received honorable mention in the essay category.

Fritz Ascher was a German Jewish painter and poet whose career and whose life were strongly affected by the Holocaust, who had to hide in order to survive, and had to switch from painting to poetry during the war years.  He survived World War II and the Holocaust by hiding in Berlin in the heart of the district in which Nazi officers lived, fearing for his life every day. The purpose of this contest is to promote thinking about the question-what does it mean to be persecuted? This is an important question for our students to address if they are to really understand what happened to our people during the Shoah and if they are to shape a secure future for themselves and those generations after them.

We are extremely proud of our students' efforts and accomplishments, especially since this contest took place when they were deeply involved in the culmination of their "Bare Witness" project and production. Kol Hakavod!

Sophomore Trip a Big Hit
The sophomore trip was a great experience for all. The trip started with Top Golf, a driving range with targets. Some of the students were able to drive the ball so well that they got a free 100 on a test from Rabbi Krinsky, who accompanied the trip as a chaperone. Following Top Golf, the students were treated to ice cream, at Baskin Robbins in Highland Park. What happened next was a brand new experience for most of the grade. Most students have never really been exposed to axes, let alone take part in axe throwing! Here students were broken up into teams of 5 where they participated in many different types of games. This was a highlight for many of the students. Many were impressed with their accuracy, as they consistently hit the bullseye. After enjoying both of these activities it was time to eat. The students had the opportunity to choose from many restaurants in Lakewood, which they really enjoyed. Following dinner, everyone headed to Philadelphia where we went to Comedysportz, an interactive improv comedy show. The students had a great time watching, and participating in this fun and entertaining show.

For the second day of our trip, we were blessed with a beautiful, sunny day as we toured different places in Philadelphia. We split the grade up by buses as each bus went its separate way. One of the groups toured the Eastern State Penitentiary. Here many students were fascinated by the complexity of the jail and how big it was. While in the jail many of the students were fascinated by how there was even a shul in the jail. The other group visited the famous Rocky Steps. Here the students were joined by Rabbi Einhorn, who led the group as they ran up the steps while listening to music from the Rocky movies. From the top of the steps the students were able to see the beautiful city of Philadelphia. Of course, they took the obligatory photo with the famed Rocky statue. After the groups switched places the trip headed to Bowlero, where they had pizza and fries waiting for them for lunch, played laser tag, arcade games, pool and bowled. This was a great way to end the trip as the students very much enjoyed all of the different options. This was great trip that allowed the grade to hang out with each other and continue to grow as grade. For more photos click here.

Engineering Club
Over the past few months, the TABC Engineering Club has been hard at work. Led by club president Shai Rosenberg, who compiled a list of dozens of possible projects for the club to work on, they decided on building a retro-style arcade game cabinet. They made the ambitious decision to make the arcade game capable of running many classic video games, including classics from the Nintendo 64 console. The project involved woodworking, fabrication, programming, and electronics, and the results are excellent! Students have enjoyed testing the system during lunch and mincha break, as members of the engineering club sit by and watch so that they can notice any issues that need fixing. This project was completed by Shai Rosenberg, Eitan Leitner, Yaron Gerszberg, Aharon Ahdoot, Zev Tovbin, and Sam Schwartz. If you want to check out this project and many others, come to the TABC STEM Showcase next Thursday at 7 PM!
STEM Sessions for Faculty
It's been a great year for STEM at TABC, with the construction of our new Makerspace, the installation of new Engineering courses under CIJE mentorship, and the formation of new Robotics and Engineering clubs. Looking towards next year, one of the goals is to create hands-on learning experiences in all subjects using STEM methodology and techniques. We've already seen a little bit of that this year, with Rabbi Jachter teaching hilchot mezuza in engineering class to prepare students to 3D print mezuza cases, and with Mr. Dietz's chemistry class working in the Makerspace to build mole boxes and get a hands-on understanding of scientific measurement units. STEM Coordinator Aryeh Tiefenbrunn led 2 sessions in the Makerspace, to which all faculty were invited. The first session, titled "Maker Technology in Education- How 3D Printing, Laser Cutting, and more can be used to bring students' learning to life", focused on showing faculty how the technology that's used in the Makerspace and the attitudes students learn from becoming familiar with the technology can be used in any subject. The second session, titled "Anatomy of an Authentic Project- Letting students learn by doing" focused on PBL, or Project-Based Learning, specifically on the concept of an authentic project. Authentic projects are ones that are directly applicable to students' everyday lives or to some real-world issue. We looked at some of the engineering class capstone projects, which are end-of-year projects the students are working on that prompt them to build a prototype of a device they invented to solve some real-world problem. We also discussed building authenticity into many types of class projects in every discipline.

We are looking forward to integrating subjects together through STEM and project-based learning in general! If you want to see more of what TABC STEM has been up to this year, come to the STEM Showcase at TABC on Thursday, May 16th from 7-9:30.

Rabbi Jachter Brings Mishna to Life
Rabbi Jachter brought the Mishna to life during shiur this past Tuesday. After completing Mishnayot Bava Metzia with his shiur he began learning Mishnayot Avoda Zara with his Mishna shiurim. The focus has been on kashrut standards for wine, cheese, milk, bread, oil and bishul akum. His focus has been on applying the Mishna in practice and as such brought in samples from his home to illustrate each of these points made in the second perek of Masechet Avoda Zara. Students learned about how to understand various kashrut standards both in the United States and Israel and how to become better and more knowledgeable kosher consumers.
Spring College Fair
On Wednesday, May 15th the College Guidance Department will hold its annual Spring College Fair for juniors and their parents.  This year's event will be held at Ma'ayanot (1650 Palisade Avenue, Teaneck), beginning at 7:30 sharp. The program will begin with brief presentations from all colleges in attendance. Following that, there will be round-robin sessions where students will be able to visit and ask questions of individual colleges. We are expecting the following colleges and universities to send representatives to the fair: Princeton University, Binghamton University, Brandeis University, Johns Hopkins University, University of Maryland, CUNY (Queens, Baruch, Hunter), Drexel University, The Technion, Washington University (St Louis), Rutgers University, Landers College for Men (a division of Touro College), Yeshiva University and Bergen Community College and SUNY Rockland.
Post Pesach Challah Baking
When Ari Kaminetsky, Yoni Mann and Akiva Prager were freshmen, they won challah baking with Mrs. Silverman in the Chanukah auction. They had so much fun, that they were determined to do it again. Last year they did not win. This year however Ari's ticket was pulled and the 3 of them came back Thursday night to claim their prize. After making the dough, dinner was served while waiting for the dough to rise. After dinner the students learned different braiding techniques, made a couple of pull aparts and even got creative with their challah shapes!!! The 3 plan to win again next year!!
Freshman Intramurals
Villanova, led by Yis Kaminetzky, won the Freshman Basketball 3 on 3 Championship. The championship game was dramatic with Eli Saks captaining his #1 seeded team to a thrilling double overtime game. Eli Spaeth and Yehuda Wiener were the difference makers to get Villanova the trophy. Regular season MVP award goes to Harry Orlinsky for his prolific scoring all season long. This season had over 9 freshman teams compete in the 10 game regular season.
STORM Report
HANC Hurricanes No Match for
TABC STORM in the Weather Center

The HANC Hurricanes returned to the Weather Center for the first time since November, this time to meet the Varsity Soccer Storm in the first round of the playoffs. Star player Uri Gulich '20 returned to the lineup after an injury sidelined him for the last game of the season. Gulich exploded for six goals on the night and terrorized the Hurricanes who had no answers in defending him. Thanks to defenders Doni Bodoff '19 and Menachem Kravetz '20, the Hurricanes were shut out for the entire first quarter and were held to one goal all half. While HANC got plenty of shots on goal, they couldn't get past goalie Avraham Kahan '19. The Storm's total domination on the court was reflected in the final score of 11-3. On to the semifinals!
Storm Baseball Win Battle for First over Heschel

Storm Baseball scored back to back wins this week, with their latest 4-0 victory over the Heschel Heat. Yechiel Keiser '19 pitched all seven innings for the complete game and shutout while Akiva Hain '19, Josh Goldman '19, and Shlomo Pasternak '20 powered the offense. It was a big win for the Storm in what was their biggest test of the season, so far.
Storm Baseball Handles Flatbush With Ease

The baseball team returned to action last week and won their first home game of the season over the visiting Flatbush Falcons. Senior Aharon Weiden set the tone both offensively and defensively in the first inning. Weiden struck out the side and stranded a runner on third, and in the bottom half of the inning, earned a walk and scored the first Storm run of the game. With the Falcons' pitcher struggling to find the strike zone all night, the Storm walked in a couple of runs and scored on some wild pitches, eventually winning the game 9-2 after six innings. The Storm is now 4-0. Ain't no stopping them now...
JV Softball Mercies Heichal in Come From Behind Win

The JV Softball team came back from four runs down to ultimately thrash the Heichal HaTorah Hornets 14-4 in five innings on a rainy and cold Friday afternoon at Votee Park. The Storm's bats were completely silenced for the first three innings and couldn't get anything going. That and mounting errors gave Heichal a 4-0 lead at the end of three. But the next two innings belonged to TABC. Captains Elan Goldstein '21 and Ari Smith '21 hit out of the park homers and going into the 5th inning, the game was tied up at 4. The next inning saw RBI singles from freshman duo Yis Kaminetzky and Netanel Eckman before the rest of the lineup got in on the fun. Kaminetzky also blasted in the last run and the Storm went from 4-0 down to up 14-4 in the blink of an eye to spare the last 2 innings of ball. The Storm is now 4-1 and will close out their regular season next weekend against JEC.
