Rising Stars Piccolo Spoleto Series
May 27 - June 7
On Monday, May 27, PSAE will host the opening performance of the 2019 Rising Stars Piccolo Spoleto Series. In its 11th year, the series will showcase young actors, dancers, musicians, writers and visual artists in the high profile venue of Spoleto Festival USA through its affiliation with Piccolo Spoleto.
A series of six programs, each program will feature young artists and/or ensembles in a conversation and performance format. All programs are presented at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church across from Marion Square on King Street in the heart of downtown Charleston at 4 PM.

On Thursday, June 27th, district arts coordinators and principals of arts-focused schools will meet for the final session of the 2018-2019 Joint Arts Administrators Institute.
It's been an exciting year for the JAAI. In February, principals and district arts coordinators met in Greenville at the Peace Center for a rich 2-day experience covering topics as diverse as Teacher Recruitment and Retention to a workshop on how to conduct successful residencies plus breakout sessions tailored for each of the groups' specific concerns. On April 22, the Institute had its first webinar, focused on exploring the relationship between principals and arts coordinators to positively impact student achievement.
On June 27th, we will meet for the concluding session for this school year. Sessions will address the goal for the JAAI - to provide high-quality professional learning for its participants with the purpose of raising student achievement within and through the arts as well as plan for the 2019-2020 Joint Arts Administrators Institute.

PSAE Annual Arts Integration Conference

We as educators have to be driven to do what is necessary for our students, and then we must be dedicated to passing on that drive to our students. But how do we do that?
According to a 2015 national poll by Gallup, two of the indicators that Americans feel are important to students' success are their levels of hope and engagement. Last October, PSAE partnered with the SC Arts Commission to look and measure this in arts-rich schools using Gallup's Student Poll. This was the first time that the poll has been used to look specifically at arts-rich schools. And the results were gratifying. According to the 2018 Gallup Student Poll results, South Carolina students in arts-rich schools report higher levels of engagement and hope.
So we are especially excited to announce that Dr. Tim Hodges, Gallup Senior Consultant, will be a keynote speaker. Dr. Hodges's address will review the findings and dig deeper into what this means. In addition, Dr. Hodges will facilitate two breakout sessions, one for teachers and another for school administrators.

This conference will bring together the innovative, the informative, and the inquisitive to network, share, learn, and recognize excellence.

 South Carolina Arts Commission

On May 1, 2019 nine South Carolinians were honored by the South Carolina Arts Commission with the 2019 Elizabeth O'Neill Verner Governor's Award for the Arts-the state's highest arts honor. "It is a privilege to recognize individuals and organizations who live out the service, commitment and passion that help the arts thrive in South Carolina," S.C. Arts Commission Chairman Henry Horowitz said. Arts in Education awards were bestowed to two recipients - Simeon Warren (Individual) and the S.C. African American Heritage Commission (Organization).
The new fiscal year begins on July 1 and with that comes a new round of grant awards. Tentative funding for Arts in Education grants can be seen here. As a reminder, the Teacher Standards Implementation grant has a rolling deadline and can fund up to $750 toward the implementation of arts standards. Advocacy Update!
The SC Arts Alliance has been hard at work monitoring education reform in SC, as well as recommending ways to make education reform more arts friendly. The House adopted 3 of our recommendations, while the Senate continues their work on the bill. Education Reform is unlikely to pass this year, but will be the prime legislation next year.

Arts Curricular Innovation Grants
The services and activities of the Arts Curricular Innovation Grants are going as planned. Grants are in the process of being read and rated and we expect grant awards to be released sometime in early August.
South Carolina Arts Assessment Program
The mission of the South Carolina Arts Assessment Program is to provide standards-based evidence that informs instruction and program development in the arts to increase student achievement and promote teacher growth.
This year we piloted a new Arts Education program survey for all schools to report out on the effects that the ACIG programs are having on program development and student achievement. The survey contains questions based on the following topics: Instructional Time and Planning, Teacher Certification, Arts Program Offerings, Funding and Budget, and Access to Arts Specific Professional Learning Opportunities. We look forward to sharing the results of this survey with the greater arts education community this fall.
Future Plans
Dear Arts Educators,
It is with deep respect and gratitude for the arts education community in South Carolina that I share with you my plans to retire on June 30, 2019. I have had the privilege of spending a lifetime working with teachers, students, and the greater arts education community for the past three decades. I want to thank you for supporting and working with me on important initiatives at the South Carolina Department of Education. Together we revised state standards for arts education, wrote the first design standards in the nation, wrote a mission and revised the South Carolina Arts Assessment Program, provided professional learning for hundreds of teachers, developed new summer arts institutes, and implemented grant programs that enhanced opportunities in the arts for thousands of students across our state.
I will remain accessible should you need me and plan to stay active in future arts education initiatives across our state. I treasure our Arts Education Community in South Carolina and the relationships that I have been able to build with many of you during this time.

A Legacy of Leadership
Christine Fisher, the ABC Project Director for 18 years, announced her retirement in March. Her passionate and tireless efforts to increase equitable access to quality arts education for all SC students can be found and felt across the state. During her tenure, the ABC Network has grown to include 84 ABC Sites that impact over 170,000 SC students! She promoted a unified and collective voice for arts education with the creation of the Council of Arts Education Presidents and an annual convening of arts education teacher preparation programs through the SC Arts Higher Education Forum. The list of accomplishments and accolades are lengthy, but what made Christine such a powerful force was her genuine relationship building skills. Regardless of location, Christine was a familiar face. Recognized and respected as a champion for the arts and arts education for all, Christine's legacy is undeniable. Everyone touched by the ABC Project is grateful for the opportunity to learn and serve alongside her.
I, Kim Wilson, was appointed ABC Project Director in April after serving as ABC Project Field Services Specialist since October 2017. My hope is to converge the traditions of the past with my varied educational experiences to guide the ABC Project and it's Network through the next chapter of arts education history in SC.

New and Expanded Summer Programs
As the school year is quickly coming to a close, the Governor's School is gearing up for a summer full of arts immersive programs, outreach experiences, and teacher retreats!
We're excited to launch the new Arts Odyssey program, which begins on June 16. This is a one-week overnight program for rising 8th and 9th grade students interested in concentrating in creative writing, drama, music, and visual arts. Students will have the opportunity to explore and work intensely in their art area while being exposed to other disciplines through performances and guest lectures.
This will be the first Governor's School program to accept rising 8th grade students. In preparation for working with younger creative minds, we invited a panel of highly qualified educators, including Joshua Powell, PSAE chair-elect, to lead a discussion with our arts faculty to learn techniques for teaching this age group.
This summer we will continue our curricular extension program Spark!, which integrates drama principles into summer reading camp programs required by Read to Succeed. Spark! began in Williamsburg County with rising 3rd and 4th grade students, and its success has led to the program's expansion into Jasper County. This is a partnership with the SC Arts Commission and USC Department of Theatre.
In addition, we'll be welcoming middle and high school Creative Writing/ELA and Visual Arts teachers in South Carolina to campus in June for our annual two-day professional development retreats. We're looking forward to providing this opportunity for teachers to network and learn together! .

Arts Access South Carolina |
The ARTS ACCESS South Carolina (AASC) Team has been keeping busy! We participated in
VSA Intersections: Regional Arts and Special Education Conference held in New Orleans, Louisiana with our colleagues from across the country on March 29 - 30. We engaged in dynamic, interactive sessions focused on effective programming techniques, examining diversity, equity and inclusion in today's world and more. Being in New Orleans, music HAD to be part of the equation and we were given the opportunity to "shake a tail feather" with members of the iconic Preservation Hall Jazz Band and witnessed, first hand, how music is utilized as a tool to reach students with disabilities. Overall, the experience provided an uplifting boost for us all!
Aiken Special Arts Festival
The Aiken Special Arts Festival is celebrating 33 years of serving approximately
3,000 students with disabilities from the Midlands Region in collaboration with Special Olympics. This year's festival took place at Midlands Valley High School in Graniteville, SC on April 26. ARTS ACCESS South Carolina is a proud sponsor and provided MASTER TEACHING ARTIST, Carter Boucher as a presenter.
