A Fantastic Conference in Snowmass Village, Colorado!

Dear VOS members,

I hope that everyone is having a terrific 2018 so far and that spring is starting to bring nice weather to you. Many of us are getting back in the routine after attending a fantastic VOS Conference in Snowmass Village, Colorado. The snow was in good shape and we had 5 inches of fresh powder Thursday night to top it off. Thanks to Alan Cross, Penny Smith and Maralyn Probst for the thorough logistics planning. Reunan Guillou and José Garcia-Lopez put together a great scientific program. The rest of the board also helped make this a great meeting.

VOS board members
VOS 2017-18 board members: From left, Rich Evans, Matt Stewart, Reunan Guillou, José Garcia-Lopez, Nina Kieves, Katja Lin, Alan Cross, Jeff Godwin, Raviv Balfour, Dick Lau, Jonathan Suber, Cheryl Tano, and Maralyn Probst
On behalf of the VOS, I want to thank Alan Cross for the great job he did leading our organization for the past year. I also want to recognize the retiring Board members: Rich Evans, Reunan Guillou, Katja Lin, Matt Stewart and Jonathan Suber. You all did a great job for the VOS and we really appreciate your service.

Our new board members are Janet Van Dyke (President-Elect), Jen Warnock (Communications Chair), Caleb Hudson (Scientific Program Assistant Chair), Jason Syrcle (Awards Chair), and Ashlee Watts (Research Chair). The best part of serving on the VOS Board is getting to work with all of the fine people that make up the leadership of this organization. I look forward to continuing that this year.

One thing that I would like to focus on this year is improving the value of membership, particularly to members that can't make it to the Conference every year. Those who attend the Conference get a lot out of the VOS. And as members, we get a discounted registration. But did you realize that about 50% of our members every year don't make it to the Conference? There are some benefits to non-attendees already, such as some of the features of our newsletter, but I would like to improve the value of membership to all members. I welcome any ideas you may have.

Another big goal is to pull off a fantastic 2019 Conference. We are already well on our way in the planning process and I am very excited about it. Here are some reasons why:
  • The location - Next year's conference will be in Breckenridge, Colorado. That has been one of our most popular locations. You fly right into Denver and drive or take a shuttle up to the resort. The mountain is fantastic with 5 peaks, large bowls and terrain for every level of skier and boarder. There is also a lot to do for non-skiers. The town of Breckenridge is a lot of fun. It has great shopping and a lot of really great restaurants. Plus there is the Breckenridge Bourbon Distillery. What more could you want?
  • Beaver Run is the name of the Conference Center. We are going to have room on the fourth floor for both the General Session, the equine session and the exhibitors. The staff there is quite knowledgeable and have been there for a long time. It doesn't have the corporate feel that some other places do. They really want to make sure we have a great Conference because they want to see the VOS meeting back as much as possible.
  • The lodging - Beaver Run also has all of the lodging types that we need. Whether you want a hotel room, suite or condo, Beaver Run will have it.
  • The picnic will be at the Maggie, right at the base next to Beaver Run. It is easy for non-skiers to walk to, and skiers can jump right on the lift after lunch to get back on the mountain. We have the flexibility of having the picnic inside or outside depending on the weather.
  • The dates - We are moving the meeting a month earlier, from February 9 to 16 - which should give us excellent snow conditions.
Jeff Godwin One other meeting I should mention is the World Veterinary Orthopedic Congress, which will be in Barcelona, Spain from September 12-15 of this year. The planning committee has scheduled 191 sessions which include topics such as feline fracture management, regenerative medicine, shoulder lameness, limb deformities, stifle surgery, sports medicine and rehabilitation to name a few. It is a beautiful city and this gives you a great excuse/reason to go there. Forty percent of the invited speakers are VOS members, so join us there.

Thanks again for allowing me the privilege and honor of serving as VOS President. Let me know if you have ideas for the organization, if you would be interested in serving on the Board of Directors, or if I can help you in any way. And I'll see you in Breckenridge in February.

Jeff Godwin
President

What products / services does your company offer?
Respond Systems, Inc (RSI) has been manufacturing both cold laser and PEMF therapy in the USA for over 30 years.

What should Veterinary Orthopedic Society members know about your company?
As a leader in development and research, RSI's mission is to improve the lives of animals through two of the most effective, versatile, and non-invasive therapy modalities on the market today. One of our goals is to limit post-surgical complications and improve recovery time. Many studies have pointed to the anti-inflammatory effects of both PEMF and laser therapy, and recent studies have indicated decreased time to ambulation post-surgery as well as improvements nerve regeneration and success in preventing features related to the articular degeneration process post ACLT.

Can you tell us about any new products or services your company is developing?
In our effort to continue to support the veterinary markets needs, we are releasing a new Class 4 therapy laser in July of 2018, the Aurora. Featuring the most effective wavelengths on the market for penetration and efficacy, the Aurora's laser probes are individually crafted to deliver the optimal wavelength in the most effective manner.
