Parents must register their children
before May 20th for extended care on minimum day, if you cannot pick up your child by 12 noon.
Extended care is available from 12:00 noon until 6 p.m. Children that are not picked up by noon will go to the lunch area. Please pick up your children in the lunch area for K-8 and from the pre-school playground in preschool.
Remember to bring lunch as on all minimum days there is no Girard Gourmet lunch.
Dismissal is at 11:45 a.m. for PK0-PK1-PK2 and K-5 and at 12 noon for middle school.

Teachers Appreciation Lunch
On Wednesday, May 1, 2019, the Parent's Association and co-chairs Celine Theano and Amy Allemann were honored to host the annual Teachers Appreciation Luncheon. Our teachers, staff and administration were treated to a delicious lunch catered by the
Green Door Cafe
in La Jolla.
Thanks to all the volunteers that worked together to make this a successful event and a huge thank you to our amazing teachers for everything they do.

This year, 43 projects were submitted by students from 2nd to 6th grade. Students did an amazing job, had a lot of fun, and learned a lot! The winners are Bodhi in 3rd grade, Olivia in 5th grade, Julie, Stevie and Lucy in 6th grade. Congratulations to the winners and all participating students, as well as their parents who helped.

High School Admissions Results
Congratulations to the SDFAS Class of 2019! We are very proud of this year's high school admission results and wish every single one of our 27 graduating 8th graders the very best for their high school years and beyond.
We are lucky to live in an area with a multitude of excellent high school options. As we tend to see every year, many of our students applied to both public and private schools, many applied to more than one school, nearly all of our students received an offer of admission at their first-choice school, and several students had multiple offers of admission.
As you can see below, finding the right individual fit for student and family results in varied results for high school, reflecting the diversity of our vibrant international community and the uniqueness of each of our graduates. Bravo!

ÉDITO
Last week was Teacher Appreciation Week. I take this opportunity to thank you for your effort, kindness, and generosity on behalf of all of our dedicated SDFAS teachers and staff. Classrooms and offices gleamed with bouquets of flowers and baskets of fruit and snacks. Also, a heartfelt thank you to the Room Parents for their splendid organization of the week and to all of the parent volunteers who took over lunch duties in each division of the school on Wednesday - all teachers enjoyed a delicious catered Teacher Appreciation meal served at elegantly decorated tables. We have the Parents Association to thank, as always, for this event. Teachers and staff were also supported by candid and thoughtful notes from students. Again, I am indeed honored to express on behalf of our teachers and staff, the most sincere gratitude for your unwavering support of their every day actions. Clearly, this is a very special community.

The month of May arrived, it is time to focus on a few major events occurring in the weeks to come, and notably in Middle School.
First and foremost, please mark you calendars for:
La Troupe, the French drama company, will perform its play in the auditorium as follows:
- on
May 9th, 2019 during Forum time from 8:30 to 9:20 am for all students
- on
May 13th, 2019 from 6 to 7 pm for the parents and community
La Troupe has again this year been energetically led by Marion Addo.
In addition, our students in the Junior Model United Nations Club will attend the San Diego JMUN Conference on
May 29th and May 30th, 2019, under the leadership of Shelby Aseltine, our 7th/8th grade English Teacher.
On May 31st, 2019, all Middle School students will enjoy the last MS Dance of the school year. This MS Dance will celebrate the Class of 2019 graduates! Then, our 8th graders will travel to Canada from
June 2 to June 7, 2019. The program was carefully crafted and organized by Diesa Seidel, our Athletics Director and Anne-Laure Denis, our MS French Science Teacher. Our students will visit Montreal and Quebec City, immersing themselves in Canadian French language, history and culture.
Finally, shortly after the trip to Montreal, it will be time for the 8th grade graduation ceremony. The Class of 2019 will receive diplomas on
June 13, 2019 at 5 pm in the auditorium. We will celebrate their accomplishments, and wish them all the best for their future endeavors in High School!
As you are aware, I too will be "graduating" from SDFAS but intend to remain in close touch and to be an ongoing part of the SDFAS extended family. I thank you all for the wonderful and enriching opportunity to have served our Middle School students these past three years.

La semaine dernière c'était la semaine d'appréciation des enseignants. J'en profite pour saluer votre travail, votre gentillesse et votre générosité de la part de toute l'équipe à SDFAS. Les classes et les bureaux étaient tout égayés de bouquets de fleurs, de paniers de fruits et de friandises. Je tiens également à remercier les Room Parents pour leur splendide organisation de la semaine ainsi que tous les parents bénévoles qui ont pris en charge la surveillance du déjeuner pour toutes les classes mercredi -- les enseignants ont pu déguster un délicieux repas d'appréciation dans un élégant décor. Comme chaque année, nous remercions l'Association des parents pour cet événement. Les petits mots écrits et dessinés par les enfants furent également fort appréciés. A nouveau, je suis fier d'exprimer au nom de tous mes collègues notre plus sincère gratitude pour votre soutien sans faille, jour après jour. De toute évidence, notre communauté est particulièrement unie.

Le mois de mai est arrivé et avec lui quelques événements importants qui vont se dérouler dans les semaines à venir, et plus particulièrement au collège.
Tout d'abord, merci de noter les dates suivantes dans votre calendrier :
La Troupe, la compagnie de théâtre en français, se produira dans l'auditorium comme suit :
- le 9 mai 2019 pendant l'heure du Forum entre 8h30 et 9h20 pour tous les élèves
- le 13 mai 2019 de 18h à 19h pour les parents et toute la communauté
La Troupe a cette année encore été dirigée avec énergie par Marion Addo.
Par ailleurs, nos élèves du Club Junior Model United Nations se rendront à la conférence JMUN les 29 et 30 mai 2019, sous la houlette de Shelby Aseltine, notre enseignante d'anglais pour les 5ème et 4ème.
Le 31 mai 2019
, tous les élèves du collège profiteront de la dernière Danse de l'année scolaire. Cette Danse fêtera les diplômés de la classe de 2019 ! Ensuite, nos élèves de 4ème partiront en voyage au Canada du 2 au 7 juin 2019. Le programme a été soigneusement élaboré par Diesa Seidel, notre Directrice des Sports et par Anne-Laure Denis, notre professeur de Science en français. Nos élèves visiteront Montréal et la ville de Québec, se plongeant ainsi dans la langue, l'histoire et la culture franco-canadienne.
Enfin, peu de temps après le séjour à Montréal, le 13 juin 2019 à 17h, aura lieu la cérémonie de remise des diplômes pour les 4ème. Nous célébrerons leur réussite et nous leur souhaiterons beaucoup de succès pendant leurs années au lycée !
Comme vous le savez, mon temps à SDFAS prendra également fin cette année, mais j'ai bien l'intention de rester en contact en temps que membre dans la grande famille de SDFAS. Je vous remercie tous pour cette merveilleuse et enrichissante opportunité d'avoir servi nos collégiens pendant ces trois dernières années.

Bamboo Toothbrushes 
The L.I.V.E club (Leadership Initiative Voluntarism Empathy) is an initiative from our English middle school teacher, Ms. Aseltine. Under her leadership, students enrolled in the club have selected sustainability as one of their major themes of action this school year. Following the momentum created by the Plastic Sustainability Event, the L.I.V.E club is now trying to raise awareness and impact daily habits such as the use of a bamboo toothbrush.
The first bamboo toothbrush sale happened on May 7, 2019.

- During International week, every elementary and middle school classe
will represent a country.
All the students will be able to visit those classes and participate in different activities organized by the students.
- In preschool, parents are invited to come and present their country/culture to their child's class.
It could be some objects, a song, music, story, game, photos, culinary items... about their country or their parents/grandparents' country. It could last anywhere between 10 mins and 30 mins. See your child's teacher if you are interested.

SDFAS will celebrate International Day
The student body will gather to see the kindergarteners and first graders sing to kick off the day
followed by the preschool parade.
All the students are welcome to come dressed
that day in a costume that represents any country of the world.
This is a student only event.

The School Council/Conseil d'Établissement meets once per trimester and is organized to:
- Promote a broad appreciation of the ideals of an international school
- Enlist the educational and social resources of home and school to provide the best education possible
- Provide an advisory (feedback) function to the school administration and a forum of exchange for parents and teachers
- And encourage the integration of families into the life of SDFAS
The council want to know from parents: What's working well in in the day-to-day functioning of the school? What questions, issues or problems and proposed solutions are there?
You can direct all questions to theirs representatives to be raised at the meeting.

LA MATERNELLE
Artwork by Hervé Tullet Whimsical meets creative in stories and artwork by Hervé Tullet. This semester, our pre-elementary school students tackled book discovery with play. In his books, children wonder, "What is going to happen as we turn each page"? He leaves his work open to children to "read it as you want" (Tullet). It is so exciting to see where each story brings the students. We are thankful that books come alive with author/illustrators like Hervé Tullet. The students experimented their reading through art, following Hervé Tullet's idea of L'expo Idéale. We hope you will enjoy the surprising end of the year show as they will emulate M. Tullet's style, stories and creativity.

Over the course of a month, Geneviève (Annabelle's mom) came to teach yoga class to the students in PK1.
"Learning yoga has many advantages:
It helps with flexibility, amplitude of movement, sleep quality, posture, balance, and circulation. It also helps tone muscles and has relaxing and meditative effects.
Yoga is beneficial for children as well as adults. While learning this sport, children are also able to learn techniques to deal with different situations. Because we know that children are learning to deal with their emotions, it is helpful to learn an activity that gives them tools to create calm and recreate it whenever they may need. The breathing techniques have an immediate effect making them feel more calm and in control. They love breathing like a lion! It is an easy breathing technique to do.
If you suggest "breathing like a lion" when helping calm a worried or crying child or even while caring for a small injury you may be surprised at how helpful it can be!
In Valerie's class I used images found in nature, animals and insects to capture the children's' attention.
My yoga class was separated into 3 sections so the children could relax:
- We began with breathing. First, the lion, expressive and fun, then sun salutation, very relaxing.
- The middle section was a series of active positions, completed while making the sounds of the corresponding animal: the tiger, cat/cow, downward dog, the lizard, the monkey, the sloth, the cobra, the elephant, the warrior, the crocodile, the butterfly and the bridge. Valérie asked that we integrate the notion of a germing seed, as the class is entering a unit on germination and gardening. So, we imitated a seed that grows and ended in the tree pose, perfect for practicing balance.
- The last section helped the children enjoy feeling relaxed, calm and meditative. The class ended with the celebratory position "shavasana". I asked them to close their eyes, breath deeply and make guttural sounds to help them concentrate. Finally, we sat cross-legged and did a meditative song. I observed that some were relaxed and others invigorated but most of all, the pleasure and pride of having learned a new activity through active participation.
Since, some students have shared that they do yoga with their parents at home or even in class.

L'ÉCOLE ÉLÉMENTAIRE
Haikus in 1st and 2nd Grades
In 1st and 2nd grade students are invited to express themselves poetically based on their experiences at school. They began this project with the help of the teacher and then, little by little, became more autonomous and created their haikus by counting the verses and using specific vocabulary. This activity also allows them to help each other, improve their work and then share their creations.

"Dear Anne-Emilie and Taylor,
Thank you for coming to school and bringing us these pretty plants that smell good. Thank you for teaching us how to plant a plant. Everyday, we smell the plants when we leave the classroom and that makes us happy. One of our favorite plants is lemon thyme (and also lavender).
We set up a new job: water the plants once a day.

COLLÈGE
Deering Banjo Company field trip

 As part of the music program for which SDFAS partners with the Center for World Music, 8th grade A and B are visiting a banjo factory. The Deering Banjo Company is a family-owned business located in Spring Valley, which produces the most banjo instruments in the nation. Students were able to enjoy a unique experience that complements their discovery of playing the banjo in music classes this trimester.

We are extremely proud to share the achievements of our middle school Junior model United Nations (JMUN) Club, which runs under the helm of Ms. Aseltine, our 7th/8th English and Social Studies Teacher. SDFAS middle school has opened the JMUN club not only to 7th and 8th graders but also to 6th graders for the past three years, with a carefully thought through intention. We know 6th graders and still young. JMUN is a very advanced and demanding work for each student enrolled, and the topics are high level and complex. When we see the results, we believe the school can pride itself for that educational choice, which works thanks to the exceptional talent of the leadership of Shelby Aseltine.
Please read Ms. Aseltine's email: « I wanted to share the success of two delegates who had their position papers selected to be read at this year's conference. Adrien Rahmati and Sofia Hayden both had their position papers selected. There are only 6 position papers per committee selected and over 400 position papers were submitted from students across San Diego County, ranging from 6th graders to 9th graders. That is a formidable achievement for both students. Additionally, I wanted to share the success of several other delegates who had their General Assembly resolutions selected to be voted on by all delegates at this year's conference. These students include Angelina Allen, Jorge Bas, Chloe Chapeux, Mattox Kopelman, Stella Lee, Adrien Rahmati, Elodie Rombaux, Gabriel Rosen-Ahmed, Coralie Schmitz, and Thomas Vidon. These students had their resolutions selected from over 550 resolutions that were submitted to the conference this year. »

Natural History Museum field trip

The 7th grade recently visited the Natural History Museum in Balboa Park with the goal to better understand how different ecosystems in southern California function, as well as understand how erosion can impact these different ecosystems. Students met with paleontologists and research experts to better understand these two subjects. This trip coincides with the ongoing interdisciplinary project in 7th grade between the Science, Language Arts, and Math classes, in which students are designing public spaces to be constructed in the southern California area with minimal environmental impact. Students will be presenting their final projects at the end of the school year.

LA LIBRAIRIE
Prix Albertine Jeunesse
This spring, your children got a chance to participate in the new Prix Albertine Jeunesse, a children's literature award organised by the French bookstore Albertine in New York. Four books were selected for three age levels (PK to 1st grades / 2nd to 4th grades / 5th and 6th grades). The selected books were originally published in French, and then translated into English. Your children, their teachers and I had a wonderful time reading all the books in both languages, and comparing the different story telling styles, as well as the slight variations from French to English. Teachers will now enter our students' votes into the system, and once all the votes are tabulated, a winner will be declared in each selection.

A big thank you from all SDFAS library patrons to the Proto family. The donation you made in memory of Charlene allowed us to acquire a beautiful collection of 35 brand new non-fiction books in French for all age levels, ranging from PK books about chickens, the sun or trains to elementary-level books about dinosaurs, planet earth or Ancient Rome.
They get checked out as soon as they are put on display: quel succès! Merci beaucoup!
