Message from the President/CEO

It's
National Small Business Week
, a more than 50-year tradition of recognizing the entrepreneurs and small businesses in America for their large contribution to our economy. It’s our small businesses that employ more than half of the workforce in this country, and they are responsible for generating the most work, creating two out of every three new jobs in the U.S.
That kind of impact is vital and worth the special attention. Every year, the Chamber chooses this month to highlight standout small businesses in our community at our
Small Business Awards Luncheon and Showcase
to be held on May 17
th.
While it is never easy whittling down the list of honorees, we feel we have come up with another group of top-notch small businesses that are the pride of our community.
It didn’t take long to settle on
Oxford Pennant
as the Small Business of the Year. Read

Celebrating 15 years of Serving Up Healthy Options!
Since 2004, the Independent Health Foundation’s Healthy Options® program has been dedicated to helping Western New Yorkers make wiser decisions when dining out and cooking at home.
More than 250 local restaurants and food trucks currently participate with Healthy Options to heart-healthy food options for their customers. The program also offers monthly cooking classes and a website that features a list of participating restaurants, weekly blog posts, healthy recipes and much more.
Where to find Healthy Options:
- The Healthy Options program offers a variety of monthly cooking classes featuring local restaurant chefs and their healthy dishes. The classes are held at Sun Cuisines (5759 Main Street in Williamsville) and Artisan Kitchens & Baths Culinary Loft (200 Amherst Street in Buffalo). All Independent Health members receive a $5 discount on the cost of each class. Plus, there are special packages available for employer groups, staff retreats and team building events.
- Healthy Options offers customized catering packages for meetings and events. This is a great way for employers to help their employees eat healthy while they’re at work.
- With the help of the Healthy Options program, all food trucks participating in Food Truck Tuesdays at Larkin Square are once again required to offer a healthy menu item this year. The weekly community event, which features nearly 45 food trucks, takes place every Tuesday, from 5 to 8 p.m., through October 1.
- For the past 13 years, the Independent Health Foundation has partnered with the Taste of Buffalo to require each restaurant to serve a Healthy Option. The Taste was the first food festival in the United States with this menu requirement. This year’s event will be held July 13 and 14.
- Healthy Options are available at Buffalo RiverWorks, the Erie County Fair and at concession stands throughout New Era Field during Buffalo Bills games. Asian chicken noodle salad, smoked turkey wrap, fresh fruit cups, and grilled and roasted seasonal vegetables are among the healthier items that Bills fans can purchase at games.
