The East Central OEA district serves OEA members in Carroll, Columbiana, Holmes, Stark, Tuscarawas, and Wayne counties.

IMPORTANT DATES:

ECOEA welcomes members to join us for a member workshop held virtually on Saturday, January 30, 2021. While traditionally our winter finance workshop, we've enhanced this event with additional sessions for a full day of opportunities designed with you in mind.
In addition to two morning sessions for STRS (certified members ) with STRS Member Education Tamla Cole (Early Career Educators and those nearing the end of career), we have a SERS session with Cameron Vaughan for all classified members. We also offer a session on Cultural Humility and Competency to explore racial and cultural bias with Isaac Baez of Stark County Mental Health and Addiction Services.
We are very excited to welcome back our keynote speaker Melissa McClain from Akron Children's Hospital with her message for all educators Secondary Traumatic Stress through the Lens of the Pandemic. Melissa will certainly have some good advice for you about dealing with your own stress in these crazy times.
In the afternoon, edtech guru Jake Miller is back with us again, with a session using Nearpod and Quizizz for formative assessment. Jake is the host of the Educational Duct Tape podcast and has been recognized as one of the top 30 IT influencers by EdTech magazine. Ellen Adornetto from OEA will lead OTES 2.0 Update for members as they prepare to move to that evaluation system.

FRIEND OF EDUCATION
ECOEA recognized outgoing State School Board member Stephanie Dodd for her commitment to public education by naming her the ECOEA Friend of Education 2020. Stephanie was honored at the virtual ECOEA Delegate Briefing on November 7. Stephanie represented District 9 which include Tuscarawas and part of Holmes counties, part of the ECOEA district. Stephanie has been a strong supporter of public school students and educators during her eight years on the State School Board. She participated each spring in the ECOEA Legislative Dinner, serving on the panel to discuss education issues with our members and legislative guests.
ECOEA FALL ROUNDTABLE; A LEGAL UPDATE was held virtually on October 26. With thirty-five members in attendance, Attorney Kathleen McKinley discussed the importance of protecting members and students through MOUs and existing contract language. She emphasized that current contract language should be followed and not disregarded because of the pandemic such as schedules, breaks, workday, class size, and other negotiated protections.
Door prizes were won by Catherine Snyder, retired from East Holmes TA; Andrea McSherry, Canton Professional EA; Cara Bacik, Lake Local EA; Jon Geramita, Wellsville Education Association; Carol Kinsey, OEA-R retired from Canton Professional EA; Molly Young, Beaver Local EA.
ECOEA DAVID AUGUSTA UNIT SCHOLARSHIPS-One $500 scholarship to a member is provided for each of the three voting units in ECOEA. The scholarships are awarded by random drawing and given by reimbursement upon documentation of expense for continuing education in the member's current field of work.
The scholarship winners were drawn at the ECOEA Delegate Briefing on November 7. Congratulations to:

FIVE STAR LOCAL WINNER-Congratulations to the North Canton Education Association! At the Fall Delegate Briefing, their local was randomly selected as the Five Star Local to receive a $500 unrestricted award from the eleven qualifying local associations. NCEA has qualified every year since 2011 when the award began and this was the first time they won the cash. Congrats to NCEA and all the Five Star Locals for exceptional participation in ECOEA!

O.N.E. held a successful parking lot social event at Jackson High School on October 28 with the Swenson's Food Truck and giveaways. Thanks to O.N.E. ambassador Kelli Repphun, JMEA member (pictured) for organizing. ECOEA President Julie Nelson was there to greet members and is pictured with JMEA President Deidre Disman and JMEA Past President Susan Ray.

Welcome back to Kathleen Purdy, ECOEA-Retired rep to the OEA-Retired Advisory Council. Kathleen is a former ECOEA President, serving 2000-2007. Kathleen previously served two terms as the ECOEA-Retired rep and. after being gone for three years, has been elected to fill the position. Kathleen is retired from Plain Local. We look forward to having you back serving our retired members, Kathleen!
