Texas City Trees Worth Billions

New Texas A&M Forest Service Study

Many of us appreciate urban trees for the aesthetic appeal they bring to our communities, neighborhoods and properties. Urban forests make up a vital part of Texas' natural resources, providing aesthetic, recreational, health and environmental benefits.

Urban forests also provide significant economic benefits which haven't been well-studied, such as job creation for arborists, nursery operators and urban foresters.

Through the study, Texas A&M Forest Service found that urban forests directly contributed $2.5 billion in industry output and employed over 43,430 people with a payroll of $1.3 billion in Texas. The state received about $1.6 billion directly from urban forests through payroll, other employee compensation and property taxes.

See-Through Trees?

Researchers create transparent wood in the lab

Wood makes a great building material except for one thing - you can't see through it. If you want a window you have to rely on glass, which is expensive and also has a tendency to let in too much cold air. Though researchers at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm have developed a way to chemically treat wood so that it not only becomes opaque - even completely transparent at times - but also stores and releases heat during the course of a day.

Urban Watershed Forestry
Conserve and protect trees in development

Throughout Texas, in communities across the United States, and around the world, expanding urbanization with population movements, urban growth, and industrialization, are cultivating challenges for urban forestry professionals when conserving and planting trees at developed sites. Part 2 of the Urban Watershed Forestry Manual, published by the USDA Forest Service, presents ways to enable developers, engineers, landscape architects, and other professionals, to incorporate more trees into developed sites.

Help NASA Measure Trees Using Your Smartphone

The GLOBE Observer app provides a step-by-step guide for people to collect scientific data on their surroundings. With the new GLOBE Trees feature, observers can record tree height by properly positioning their phones. With the GLOBE Observer, everyone can become a citizen scientist and easily take measurements to better understand their local ecosystem. Observers can measure one tree or hundreds. The data points--along with a GPS tag of the tree's location--are sent back to NASA and collected in a database.

East Texas, Nations 'Wood Basket', Prepares to Rise

Tall pines blanket much of East Texas. Amid them, hunters stalk the deer, hogs and fowl that flit between the trees. The forests cover more than 75 percent of Hardin, Tyler, Polk, Jasper, Newton and Marion counties and take up more than half the land in two dozen more. And if you look closely, at just the right angle, the apparent wilderness resolves into perfect rows, like a field of corn. The region's native trees have been harnessed into what's known as the "wood basket" of the nation by foresters such as Rob Hughes, president of the Texas Forestry Association
5 Best Ways to Handle a Late-Paying Client

A small business's cash flow is, not surprisingly, dependent on cash. That's why late-paying clients can be an incredibly frustrating challenge for a small business owner. It not only ties up money you need to pay your own bills - trying to get clients to pay can become a real time drain. In fact, a 2017 study found that small business owners spend an average of 1.3 days a month chasing down money that's owed to them.
