New Study Confirms Presence of the Female Protective Effect

A new paper published in Cell, funded by the Autism Science Foundation and using the largest genetics sample to date, confirmed the presence of the Female Protective Effect in ASD.  This helps explain why fewer females are diagnosed with ASD compared to males.  Even when the symptom severity is the same, females with ASD show more genetic mutations compared to males.

Siblings Evee and Tim Bak participate in the Autism Sisters Project
Additional studies by the Autism Sisters Project are exploring the mechanisms that cause the Female Protective Effect, so more targeted interventions for males and females can be developed.  You can listen to a podcast describing this study here . Thanks to all the families who participate in ASF's Autism Sisters Project!

Introducing our ASF Hall of Famers

At ASF, we love to invest in promising young autism investigators with cutting-edge ideas who often just need a little seed money to get their research off the ground. Many of our grantees have leveraged these funds into NIH and other large grants and have made major contributions to our field. Read about some of our star researchers at our new ASF Hall of Fame
