64 SECONDS to Learn Up To  25 THINGS about St. Louis Park High School
May 3, 2019

1:   From the Principal

One of our district core values as mentioned in our Strategic Plan states that "Everyone has the capacity and responsibility to contribute to the well-being of others".  This past week at the high school saw many examples of this core value in action.

On Wednesday one of our seniors, Yonah Davis, was honored as the recipient of the Rose Rees Peace Award from the National Council of Jewish Women Minnesota.  Yonah joined a panel of award recipients from other Metro Area Schools.  This panel of award winners shared their amazing stories and their plans for the future.  I left this ceremony with a great deal of hope surrounding the contributions of young people to our world.  Their concern for others was a focal point for many that spoke.  I commend them for their wisdom that far exceeded their numeric age.

On Friday, we held our National Honor Society Induction Ceremony.  Often times recognition for this group is focused on academic excellence, but another aspect of their success lies in their projects and contributions to communities outside of our school.  Thank you to Jill Merkle, NHS Advisor, and our NHS Executive Board for all of their efforts to organize a beautiful ceremony.  It was very easy for me to share my Park Pride with parents, students, and families this morning as we honored their contributions to the well-being of others.

2:  Hennepin West Consortium Partnership Retreat

Three St. Louis Park High School freshmen, Teontay Bryson, Gamachu Dedefo, and Torii Eberle, spoke at the  Hennepin West Consortium Partnership Retreat on  April 23, 2019 about their experience and life changing takeaways!

The students were members of the Business Innovation Course (a CTE program) in which they successfully created and operated their own business. The student business was called  "Lightning" in which they successfully marketed and sold to all St. Louis Park Schools "SLP Strong We All Belong"  bracelets that united the community!

The Hennepin West Consortium is responsible for the administration and implementation of the Carl D. Perkins IV Grant.  The Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act is a principal source of federal funding to states for the improvement of secondary and postsecondary career and technical education programs across the nation. The purpose of the Act is to develop more fully the academic, career, and technical skills of secondary and postsecondary students who elect to enroll in career and technical education programs.
3:  2019 Career Expo

A sincere thank you to all the career guests at our 2019 Career Expo. Our teachers and students feedback has been fantastic!

One of our students said it best in his thank you to our guests:
"Thank you so much for coming to the St. Louis Park Career Expo. High school is a critical transition point in many of our lives. As young adults figuring out our futures, the opportunity to interact with real adults in the workforce and gain multiple perspectives is invaluable. As many of us head down different post-secondary pathways, knowing about different job opportunities will help inform our future decisions. Thank you for taking the time to share your experiences and for playing a role in shaping our future.

With gratitude,

St. Louis Park Student"
(written by a member of the class of 2019 who has experienced the career expo for 4 years)
4:  Rose Rees Peace Award

We were thrilled this week to celebrate Yonah Davis, this year's winner of the Rose Rees Peace Award.   This award was established by the National Council of Jewish Women to honor a high school senior who "demonstrates  leadership in community service or advocacy" and who share Rose Rees' "passion for peace and justice."    Yonah has been an exemplary leader in these areas both in the school and the wider community, and we are both proud of and grateful for his work. We celebrated him and the other winners on Wednesday in a Banquet at Beth El Synagogue. Congratulations Yonah!

11:  Eau Claire Jazz Festival

Last weekend, the St. Louis Park High School Jazz Ensemble traveled to Eau Claire, Wisconsin for the Eau Claire Jazz Festival. This small city turns into a jazz hub once a year and produces one of the nation's best-respected jazz festivals. Students heard the festival's winning college jazz band and jazz combo as well as a rising national professional act named Grace Kelly. She is a young Asian-American jazz saxophone/vocal prodigy who has performed professional since age 14. They were also treated to the US Airmen of Note, the top military jazz ensemble in the country. They performed three pieces for adjudication and also sightread for a judge. Though exact rankings and scores are still to come, their director, Mr. Schmitz, was very proud of their performance.
12:  2019-20 All State Band

Last Friday, months of preparation and an intense audition process culminated in MMEA (MN Music Educators' Association) releasing the names of students who will be in the 2019-2020 All State Bands. These elite concert and jazz bands contain the best high school players in the state and this accomplishment is akin to winning state in a sport.

Our high school had a record six students go through the process and they are better musicians because of it. We are extremely proud to announce that Zoe Younger, a junior on trombone, made the All State Concert Band. Mitchell VonEschen, a junior on piano, made the All State Jazz Band. These students are only the 5th and 6th Park students to make All State Bands in the last decade. They will attend a weeklong summer camp to prepare their music. The honor culminates in a mid-February performance at Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis as part of the the state music education convention.
