In a survey of state legislators, Jane Zhu, Manik Chhabra, and David Grande find a stark partisan divide on certain Medicaid reform proposals, such as work requirements, and common ground on others, such as reducing drug prices. This work was supported by an LDI Policy Accelerator Grant. Brief
In the Journal of Health Economics, Guy David and Kunhee Lucy Kim find that a single handoff between skilled nurses in a home health episode increases the likelihood of 30-day hospital readmission by 16 percent, and one in four rehospitalizations during home health care could be avoided if handoffs were eliminated. In a review of best practices, Nate Handley, Lynn Schuchter, and Justin Bekelman identify and assess five evidence-based strategies for reducing unplanned acute care for patients with cancer. Brief
In JAMA Internal Medicine, Matthew McCoy, Genevieve Kanter, and colleagues find that speakers at Food and Drug Administration advisory committee meetings may have significant conflicts of interest, which are frequently undisclosed, raising concerns about bias in public engagement. Blog
In a JAMA Perspective, Harald Schmidt and Allison Hoffman review the ethics of Medicaid work requirements, and propose safeguards to minimize risk and protect beneficiaries' health. Blog
Mark Pauly argues that permitting work requirements in Medicaid is an acceptable political deal if it persuades some states to expand the program. He proposes ways to achieve the dual goals of covering the uninsured and increasing participation in work. Blog
On our blog, Adriana Perez describes how the Caregiver Advise, Record, Enable (CARE) Act can support family caregivers of vulnerable older adults, and suggests ways for states to implement CARE in Latino communities. Blog
Christina Roberto testified before a Philadelphia City Council committee about a proposed bill that would require chain restaurants to put warning labels on menu items containing more than the daily recommended intake of sodium. She cites her research on consumer response to such labels, which was supported by an LDI Policy Accelerator grant. Video
In a JAMA Perspective, Shreya Kangovi and David Asch discuss how some individuals will be discouraged when they fail to meet metrics and goals in health promotion programs. They suggest ways to help people feel motivated, rather than discouraged, by failure. Perspective
With more than 30 presentations, our economists will be well-represented at the 7th Biennial Conference of the American Society of Health Economics (ASHEcon) on June 11-13 in Atlanta. A special feature this year is a "Conference within a Conference" on the economic implications of narrow provider networks, co-sponsored by Penn LDI and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Details
Today kicks off the 19th year of the Penn LDI Summer Undergraduate Minority Research (SUMR) program. Twenty-three students from 17 schools will spend the summer conducting health services research under the guidance of Penn faculty. Their first activity: rowing on the Schuylkill! News
A multidisciplinary group of experts met on Penn's campus for a two-day "Think Tank" led by Mary Naylor and Nancy Hodgson. The group identified actionable recommendations for improving care for older adults with complex health and social needs, and supporting their family caregivers. Photos
