May 2019 Newsletter
Stimulation - Knowledge - Interaction - Fun
Dear Members and Friends,

The month of May features our annual Art Show at the Northeast Harbor Library - be sure to stop in if you haven't seen it yet. Thank you to all the artists, and to the volunteers who helped put on the show and the opening reception, and to Sydney for producing the invitation and poster.

We'll be finishing up our spring course session and heading into the busy summer season here on MDI. Please submit your course evaluations when you get your email reminders.

Coming up are our Annual General Meeting and Potluck Social on June 5th and a bus trip to Owls Head Transportation Museum and the Farnsworth in Rockland on June 7th.

Lastly, watch for announcements about our summer lecture series co-sponsored with the Jesup Memorial Library and the League of Women Voters (June, July, and August), plus a screening of "The Sonic Sea" at the Criterion (August 7th).

The 11th annual ASC Members' Art Show opened on May 3rd at the Northeast Harbor Library and runs through the end of the month.

Over twenty-five artists are showcased in the exhibit which features a variety of media. Artists Susan Lerner, Sydney Roberts Rockefeller, and Melita Westerlund created this year's arch and fashion accessories, re-purposing detritus collected from the Window Dressers project.

The opening reception and gala membership party was well attended by over 100 members and guests! ASC President Nat Fenton recognized our site venue and bank partners, and the many volunteers who teach, speak, and help to put on the wonderful events (like the art show and reception!) held throughout the year.

A few photos from the reception below - see more photos on Facebook.

A Visit with Ashley Bryan
Nat Fenton's Civil Rights class visited Islesford to hear Ashley Bryan's tales of life in a segregated Army and his experiences as a stevedore on Omaha Beach 75 years ago. After Ashley's talk, Nat presented the story of Isaac Woodard, a black soldier from the South, and discussed the incredible contrast between how blacks were treated in the North and South. Before heading back to MDI, the class visited Ashley's home where he offered cookies and signed his books.
