This month, we will be embarking on our new five-year strategic plan. There are two public forums scheduled this month, and everyone is encouraged to attend to voice your vision for the library's future. Forums will be held from 6 pm to 8 pm in our program room on Thursday, June 21 and Thursday, June 28. Refreshments will be served.
Another highlight of June is the annual meeting of an essential organization, the Friends of the Edgartown Library. The Friends invite you to join them for a luncheon meeting in our program room at noon on Friday, June 22, to learn about their vital work in supporting many of the programs we present here all year.

Deep Dive into French Cinema:
All summer long, the library will be screening gems from the French cinema, including classics, contemporary film and more obscure treasures. Come along for the whole ride and experience the range and richness of French film, or stop in for a personal favorite or two. This series is presented in tribute to Jack Wildauer.

Our French Cinema series kicks off with a screening of Jean-Jacques Beineix's film,
a no holds barred stunner. Its combination of fashion, modern morality, high art, romance, and murder established its own genre: the "Cinema du Look."
A Prophet (2009)

Director Jacques Audiard's riveting prison thriller shows the brutal transformation of a small-time criminal into a big-time boss. With Niels Arestrup and Tahar Rahim.
Jules and Jim (1962)
7 p.m. Wednesday, June 20
One of the masterpieces to come out of the French "New Wave,"
François Truffaut's ode to mad love remains fresh after almost sixty years. Starring Oskar Werner, Henri Serre, and a stunning Jeanne Moreau.
The Triplets of Belleville (2003)
7 p.m. Wednesday, June 27
A dark, whimsical, and inventive bit of animation from filmmaker Sylvain Chomet cycles into the surreal. The strong visual storytelling and great music keep it lively.

Island historian Thomas Dresser will present his new book, Whaling on Martha's Vineyard, in an illustrated talk.
Through memoirs, music and memorabilia, Dresser recounts the dramatic 150-year era when
the industry reigned supreme on the Island.

Martha's Vineyard Outdoors
In a collection of his weekly columns, former Martha's Vineyard Times editor Nelson Sigelman describes an Island preoccupation, less notorious than tourism but more obsessive, rooted in fishing and hunting traditions that shaped the Island's character and its characters.

The Edgartown Library book group, moderated by Jean Stone, is concluding another season of lively discussions -- always on the third Wednesday of the month. This group is open to all, and our library staff can help you get a copy of this month's book to read.
Up for discussion on May 16 is Tom Hanks' collection of short stories, Uncommon Type.

Local author Carolyn O'Daly, humor contributor to Martha's Vineyard Magazine, reads from her recent book, There's Something About the Vineyard, essays and short pieces that survey the Island community in her bemused and good natured style.

Join us for an introduction to the ukulele with Deirdre Decarion (of Featherstone's Uke Jam fame). George Harrison of the Beatles loved the ukulele -- and what's not to love? Ukuleles are fun, affordable, and easy to learn to play. Deirdre will present an introduction to the plucky little instrument and show you a few basics. Bring an instrument or borrow one of the library's.

Opera Club Matinee:
Jean-Philippe Rameau's
Platée
Marc Minkowski conducts the Orchestra and Chorus of Les Musiciens du Louvre in Laurent Pelly's production of Jean-Philippe Rameau's comic opera about the travails of a love-lorn frog queen. Recorded in 2002 at the Palais Garnier, the cast includes Paul Agnew in the title role, Mireille Delunsch as La Folie, and a supporting cast of fine vocalists.
Sung in French with English subtitles, the opera is 2 1/2 hours, plus intermission.
All adults are welcome.

Vineyard Classic Brass
Spend a delightful hour with the gleaming sounds of Vineyard Classic Brass, whose repertoire ranges from popular favorites to light classics. A reception for the musicians follows the concert.

Dilber Er demonstrates Turkish Art
2 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, June 23
Ebru, the traditional Turkish art of paper marbling decoration, is unique, fascinating to observe, and even more fun to try. Painter Dilber Er has enjoyed this art as a hobby for the last few years (she's an engineer, math teacher, wife and mom during working hours), and will fill you in on its history. She'll demonstrate the technique and every participant will create their own painting.
This workshop is free, but registration is required. Call the library or drop in to sign-up.

iPad Refresher with Kathy Lavieri
10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 28
So you have an iPad and you're excited to use it -- but where to begin? Or do you just want to refresh your skills? Kathy Lavieri, technology trainer with over twenty years of experience working with diverse groups of adults, will hold an iPad Refresher program for seniors. Call to reserve your spot, as space is limited. This program is co-sponsored by the Edgartown Council on Aging (508-627-4368) and the library (508-627-4221); please call to reserve your spot.

Young Adult Book Club
3-4 p.m. Wednesday, June 6
Join Morgan after school at 3 p.m. on June 6 for a conversation
about Leah on the Offbeat (Creekwood #2) by Becky Albertalli. It's the sequel to the award-winning Simon versus the Homo Sapiens Agenda, which the group enjoyed reading last month.
In this follow-up to "Simon" we're back at Creekwood High following Leah Burke, Simon's best friend, as she navigates friendships, first love, the prom, and everything else senior year has in store for her.
The group's next meeting will be
Wednesday, June 20, at 3 p.m. That book selection is yet to be determined.
All young adults ages 9 and up are welcome to join.

Weekly Events This Month:
Story Hours
Preschool-age story hours this month are at 10:30 a.m. on Thursdays, and feature
a different vehicle each week.
Saturdays at 10:30 a.m., it's Lap-Sit Storytime, for infants and children up to 24 months with
a caregiver. Activities will include short books, fingerplays and songs.
Saturday Drop-In Crafts
Every Saturday from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m., for all ages
Kids under age 9 must be accompanied by an adult.
Tuesday Preschool Open Paint Group
From 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. every week. Come and free paint using our collection
of fingerpaints and paintbrushes. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
