Monterey County Public Health Laboratory & Consolidated Chemistry Laboratory - Student Internship

Monterey County Health Department has both a
Public Health Laboratory and Consolidated Chemistry Laboratory located in Salinas, CA. Monterey County Public Health Laboratory (MCPHL) is one of about 30 Public Health Laboratories (PHL) in California that are the first line of defense to protect the public against diseases and other health hazards. The Consolidated Chemistry Laboratory is an environmental laboratory that performs water quality testing and food testing to identify causes and sources of foodborne illness.

DEVELOP, part of NASA’s Applied Sciences Program, addresses environmental and public policy issues through interdisciplinary research projects that apply the lens of NASA Earth observations to community concerns around the globe.
DEVELOP offers three project terms per year – spring, summer, and fall. Each term lasts 10 weeks, with the spring term beginning in late January, summer term beginning in early June, and the fall term beginning in mid-September. All project deliverables are created within the 10-week time frame.

The Alaska Coastal Summer Institute (ACSI) is a unique, immersive field study opportunity for undergraduate and continuing education students. ACSI is built around four core experiences hosted by local research agencies and community organizations in the Kachemak Bay area.
Students participating in ACSI also have the option to study at the Kachemak Bay Campus in the semester prior to or following ACSI through
Semester By the Bay. Internships may be conducted for university credit.

Big Sur Redwood Forest Restoration at Glen Deven Ranch

Join the Watershed Stewards Program and the Big Sur Land Trust at Glen Deven Ranch in Big Sur, where we will be restoring a redwood forest and enhancing steelhead trout habitat along Garrapata Creek!

Blue Strike Environmental (BSE), in partnership with California Roots, has created The Community Green Team (CGT). The CGT program will offer groups the opportunity be a part of California Roots. In exchange for one 5-hour volunteer shift, individuals will receive a ticket to enjoy the festival after their shift is over.

Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary - Become a Sanctuary Exploration Center Volunteer Docent
Training will be held on Wednesdays between April 10th - May 15th | 6:00 - 9:00 pm at the Sanctuary Exploration Center
Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary (MBNMS) is seeking a team of dynamic individuals to become docents at the new Sanctuary Exploration Center in Santa Cruz. Working side by side with MBNMS staff, docents will have the opportunity to interpret exhibits to the public, conduct guided tours, assist in daily operations, and participate in events and programs.

UCSC Fort Ord Natural Reserve Monitoring Assistant Volunteers

Sea Otter Savvy Program
The Moss Landing based outreach and research program,
Sea Otter Savvy
, is focused on conducting research on the human impacts to sea otters along the central California coast using a variety of outreach forums to educate the public about sea otter conservation and wildlife viewing etiquette.
Volunteers are required to commit to one 3-5 hours shirt per week for a minimum of 3 months. Each shift will be variably scheduled between dawn and dusk.

Volunteer with UCSC Fort Ord Natural Reserve
UC Santa Cruz Fort Ord Natural Reserve (FONR) is seeking hardworking student volunteers with an interest in ornithology. They will be doing hands-on bird banding through FONR.
The project offers a unique opportunity to learn about mist netting, banding, data collection and processing, and bird safety at FONR. Volunteer experience will provide students with invaluable professional and research skills to cite on their resume. There is no experience or time commitment necessary to volunteer. Times and durations of volunteer opportunities is subject to change with the seasons.

Volunteer with Fort Ord National Monument
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is seeking student volunteers for restoration projects on Fort Ord National Monument (FONM) through Dec 2019. They will be restoring native habitats including oak woodlands, grasslands, and riparian corridors on FONM.
Projects are highly variable but a student can expect to remove invasive species, monitor goat grazing activity, monitor old restoration sites, work on GIS or remote sensing projects, monitor oak restoration on FONM, collect seeds, close illegal recreational trails, repair damaged recreation trails, conduct bunch-grass surveys, conduct biodiversity surveys, weed trail heads and sensitive areas, collect native seed and many more exciting opportunities!
The BLM will work with each student to develop their resume as the volunteer experience will give the student skills needed for future employers. There is no experience or commitment necessary to volunteer. However, students who can commit to a weekly schedule are preferred. Students who can volunteer for 90 hours before the end of May can obtain 2-units of elective course credit. If you are interested in obtaining elective credit, then please contact us as soon as possible so we can help you get enrolled in the proper course.

Volunteer with UC Santa Cruz Fort Ord Natural Reserve (FONR)
UCSC researchers are trying to understand the fire history at FONR through studying the age range of present Sandmat manzanita. They are seeking undergraduate volunteers to help set out plots that were already established by another study. Volunteers would need to be available for about 4-5 hours on Fridays. For times, it depends on the schedule of those who wish to volunteer.
