South Dakota Manufacturing Week Around the Corner
As the days of September are crossed off the calendar, the countdown to 2018 South Dakota Manufacturing Week is growing smaller. This year's event is slated for Oct. 1-5, with the last day coinciding with National Manufacturing Day.

"In South Dakota, we continue to celebrate our manufacturers and their impact on the state - both economically and as employers," said GOED Commissioner Scott Stern.

Deputy Commissioner Scheibe to Give Opportunity Zone Presentations
GOED Deputy Commissioner Aaron Scheibe will be presenting on Opportunity Zones to communities across the state in September and October.

Opportunity Zones, which were created as part of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, are an economic development tool designed to spur economic development and job creation in distressed communities. They provide tax benefits to investors, who will invest capital in projects in areas that may otherwise fail to attract the investment.

Presentations will be given at the following locations:

  • Madison, Sept. 24, 3 p.m. CT, | Beacom Institute of Technology - DSU - 810 N. Washington Ave   
  • Winner, Oct. 10, 7 a.m. CT | Country Pride Cooperative meeting room, 201 S. Monroe St.  
  • Sioux Falls, Oct. 10, 2 p.m. CT | SF Chamber of Commerce - Ordal Conference Room  
  • Brookings, Oct. 11, 2 p.m. CT | Research Park - Brookings Innovation Center, Executive Conference Room
  • Brule County/Crow Creek, Oct. 12, 8 a.m. | Chamberlain Community Center
  • Aberdeen, Oct. 15, 2 p.m. CT | Smart Center - 416 Production Street North

GOED Hires New Business Development Representative
Later this month, the GOED will be welcoming Lisa Zens to the staff as the newest Business Development Representative.

Zens was formerly the executive director of Grow Spink, an economic development organization based out of Redfield.

Zens will cover the southeast region of South Dakota and work with value added ag companies. Her first day is Sept. 24. She will be based in the Sioux Falls office.
