Regional Fire District
Tax on Cannabis Growers
What it is: A tax to be imposed exclusively on the cannabis industry within the Monterey County Regional Fire District.
What it's NOT: A tax to be imposed on district residents or other businesses.
The fire district is mandated by law to regulate, control and protect the cannabis industry, yet the county's recently enacted "Measure Y" does not provide any funding to offset expenses incurred by the Fire District for mandatory cannabis operations oversight.

Jeff Ohlson, Featured Speaker at the Carmel Valley's 1st Saturday Program Series

Friends of the Carmel Valley Library are proud to host Jeff Ohlson, who will present the history of the iconic Boeing 747, now slowly seeing its sunset on aviation's stage. Jeff was on the original 747 Design Team in the late 1960's and will give an insiders account into the engineering, birth, and eventual introduction of the 747 into the commercial airline fleet. Known by her nicknames, "Jumbo Jet" and "Queen of the Skies," the 747, with her wide body and long range, made international air travel affordable for the masses.
After a 38-year career spanning several major airline programs, he retired from Boeing in 2004. He and his wife of 46 years, Cherie, live in the Robles del Rio area just south of Carmel Valley Village. In 2012, Jeff volunteered for the Carmel Valley Historical Society and has since served on its Board of Directors, has curated several exhibits for the History Center's museum, and published several books on Carmel Valley history.
This free program at the Carmel Valley Branch is hosted by the Friends of the Carmel Valley Library as part of its popular first Saturday Program Series. Refreshments. Seating is limited. Information, please call the Library at 659-2377.

Concerning Short-Term Rentals in Carmel Valley

County Official Melanie Berretti will present the county's latest proposal, which does not significantly limit short-term rentals (STRs) in Carmel Valley.
CVA has stated our final position on short-term rentals in Carmel Valley in a letter sent to Monterey County Supervisors, Planning Commission members, and county staff.
Here is an excerpt and a link to the letter:
The Carmel Valley Association strongly recommends that within the Carmel Valley Master Plan area, short-term rentals be limited to "home stays." "Home stays" are defined as short-term rentals that are owner-occupied and managed. No absentee owners, property management companies, corporations, or LLC's would be permitted. The owner would be required to be a permanent year-round resident, and the home would be his or her primary residence. The owner would be required to live in and be present on site during the short-term rental period. Owners would be limited to no more than one STR.

Thank you for your overwhelming response to my article about the Carmel Valley airport property in our quarterly Carmel Valley Association newsletter. More than 30 of you responded as to having an interest in organizing to determine how we can save this wonderful Carmel Valley resource.
We will be hosting a meeting at the Carmel Valley Community Youth Center hall, 25 Ford Road in the village, on June 6, 2018, from 6:30pm to 9:00pm, to begin to organize and formulate the most effective way to save the airport property as open space for Carmel Valley. Many of you have wonderful skills that can help us. Among those who responded are individuals with a broad range of skills related to finance, land trusts, law, real estate, computers,and local government.
This meeting is open to all and will focus on organizing an active ad hoc committee to mobilize local resources to secure the Carmel Valley airport property. The CVA Board of Directors and I look forward to working with you to achieve that goal. If you can, please RSVP by June 3, 2018, to either Sandy Schachter at [email protected] or [email protected]. Work Continues on Highway One Climbing Lane
2-12-18 to 8-31-18
The project consists of widening northbound Highway 1 from Rio Road to Carmel Valley Road to provide a truck climbing lane. The truck climbing lane will connect to the existing climbing lane north of Carmel Valley Road. Construction of the Climbing Lane Project will provide better access and reduce congestion in the area.

Rancho Cañada Court Case
Decided in CVA's Favor
On April 24, 2018, the court issued its statement of decision in Petitioner Carmel Valley Association's favor. As a consequence of the court's decision, the County of Monterey must set aside its approvals of the subdivision, including the County's certification of the Environmental Impact Report (EIR).
The Carmel Valley Association prevailed on the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) and affordable housing.
The developer can appeal, restart the process with new documents, or abandon the project.

Cima Collina Sues the County
Over Denial of Special Events at Hilltop Ranch
After the Monterey County Board of Supervisors re-affirmed, 4 - 1, the Planning Commission's reversal of the "Administrator's Interpretation" that Cima Collina's Hilltop Ranch be allowed Special Events, the winery is suing the county, claiming that opponents waited too long to contest an April approval of events there,
and that neither supervisors nor county planning commissioners had jurisdiction to hear the matter.
It is our understanding that the previously scheduled court date of May 30th has been postponed. We'll keep you up-to-date.
Reversal of the board's ruling, and the precedent set by it, would have an extremely negative impact on our valley!

CVA was instrumental in the adoption of the Carmel Valley Master Plan and recently settled a lawsuit with Monterey County regarding traffic measurement and capping future development on very favorable terms for our valley.
