Governor and First Lady Northam hosted the recipients of the 2019 Governor's Volunteerism and Community Service Awards at a reception at the Governor's Mansion on April 9th. The awards highlighted the outstanding efforts individuals and organizations have made on behalf of citizens throughout the state. Governor Northam praised this year's winners saying, "These individuals, organizations, and companies are wonderful examples of how we can all impact our communities." The awards are organized by the Office on Volunteerism and Community Services in partnership with the Governor's Advisory Board on Service and Volunteerism and the Virginia Service Foundation. Could your organization help to provide summer meals to children this summer? The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is looking for organizations to participate in the USDA Summer Food Service Program (SFSP). Participants will be reimbursed by the VDH for meals and some administrative costs, as well as receive technical assistance. In order to help determine that an organization meets SFSP standards of viability, accountability, and capability, VDH requires that first year organizations participate in SFSP as feeding sites. Additional grants and funding resources are available for feeding sites.
New National and Virginia Value of Volunteer Time Announced
The Independent Sector has released a new Value of Volunteer Time of
$25.43 an hour nationally and
$27.50 an hour in Virginia.This value is
calculated each year to show the economic impact of volunteers on our economy. Just like a check or a pledge card, volunteers are a vital resource that help nonprofits deliver on their mission. Board members, committee members, and community volunteers contribute in unimaginable ways.
Mandated reporters are individuals who have regular contact with vulnerable populations and are therefore legally required to ensure a report is made when abuse is observed or suspected. The Virginia General Assembly has expanded the definition of mandated reporters in the Commonwealth.
