GW Cardiology Fellowship Alumni Attend Annual
 
P. Jacob Varghese Visiting Professorship Reception

Graduates of the GW Cardiology Fellowship Program joined current cardiology faculty and fellows for the Fourth Annual P. Jacob Varghese Visiting Professorship and GW Cardiology Alumni Reception on Wednesday, April 25th at the Westin Georgetown. Dr. Arshed A. Quyyumi, Professor of Medicine in the Division of Cardiology at Emory University School of Medicine and Co-Director at Emory Clinical Cardiovascular Research Institute, served as visiting professor and presented " Precision Medicine: Predicting Risk in Patients with Cardiovascular Disease." In addition, Dr. Quyyumi presented "Stem Cells in Cardiovascular Disease," for Medical Grand Rounds.












Drs. Andrew Choi and Marco Mercader Screen for AFib at FedEx Field Redskins Draft Day

 
 
 
Drs. Andrew Choi and Marco Mercader joined the American College of Cardiology's CardioSmart Team, Men's Health Network and Heart Rhythm Society, at the Redskins Draft Day at FedEx Field on Saturday, April 28th, for a national screening campaign for atrial fibrillation (AFib) and awareness of its link to stroke. The "Undiagnosed Non-Valvular Atrial Fibrillation Patient- A Screening and Awareness Campaign" aims to help identify individuals with asymptomatic AFib and provide advice about stroke prevention. Drs. Choi and Mercader reviewed participants' results from heart rhythms and blood pressure screenings. More than 200 attendees were screened. 





Research on Chagas Disease Awarded Second Prize at American College of Physicians Annual Meeting 
 
GW Medical Resident, Dr. Maziar Rahmani, presented data on "Chagas Heart Disease: Comparison of Pacemaker Parameters," at the American College of Physicians DC Regional Meeting in May 2018.  Chagas is a deadly infection common in Central America that causes heart muscle damage and heart rhythm disorders. Dr. Rahmani won Second Prize for best research and oral presentation.  Data for the study was based on information gathered from the Institute's annual medical mission to Honduras. He worked under the supervision of Drs. Marco Mercader and Cynthia Tracy. Other participants in the research project included Ivan Peña, Dorys Chavez and Dr. Bianca Ummat.
Dr. Ramesh Mazhari Leads Panels at SCAI National Meeting

  
Dr. Ramesh Mazhari was an invited panel leader for the annual Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions' (SCAI) conference discussion on " Same-day discharge: Are You Ready?" on Wednesday, April 25th in San Diego, CA. The panel discussed new SCAI guidelines, clinical, economic, and patient considerations for same-day discharge for patients who undergo cardiac catheterizations. Dr. Mazhari also served as a healthcare leadership panelist at the SCAI's Women in Innovations Physician Leadership Summit discussing Women in Interventional Cardiology.
