"RE:VIEW: An Allegory of Women"
opens Saturday, August 25
"RE:VIEW: An Allegory of Women," featuring new original works by Houston native New York City based artist and curator Ricardo Osmondo Francis, opens at The Collective Saturday, August 25.
Inspired by Classical art, multi-ethnic antiquity, and present day advertisement imagery Francis' vivid pictorial works present a torrent of imagery culled from every possible corner of the visual culture.
His lush, elaborately graphic surrealistic paintings and drawings often depict the social constructs of humanity and the complexity of our existence
through striking introspective, portraiture, still life, and abstract compositions. In this show Francis explores the theme of women as a subject of contemplation. This current series further shows the artist's stylistic vocabulary deepening and developing in an unlikely way.
Francis, who honed his artistic talents in the Third Ward and at the Community Artists' Collective and Houston's High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, is currently director of LeonidesArts NY, an artist-run multi-media visual arts organization dedicated to presenting contemporary art exhibitions and/or public art projects that reflect a variety of distinct themes, disciplines and cultural experiences outside of the conventional art gallery tenet.
The opening reception on Saturday is from 1 to 5 p.m., with an artist talk by Francis at 3 p.m. The exhibition runs through Saturday, September 29.

When we are ready...
Houston Play On Purpose
and Playwright Holly Charles, a CAC advisory board member, will present the episodic stage play "I'm Still a Woman
," which explores the prevalent,
yet taboo topic of infertility in women of
color. Showing at Midtown Arts & Theater Center (MATCH), 3400 Main, on Saturday, August 25, HPOP hopes to shape and change the way fertility is perceived within the African and Hispanic Diasporas.
"I'm Still a Woman"
is an episodic performance made up of eight monologues from women of color confronting the topic of delayed motherhood, as well as the expectations, timelines and social constraints which often hinder the emotional welfare of women. The intimate account of each character sheds light on the increase of Black and Latina women in education and business, misconceptions concerning infertility, as well as statistics concerning dating and marriage culture in minority
communities. Each woman embraces her journey to motherhood, whether by way of proactive health care, fertility assistance, adoption or other acts of faith, by first proclaiming the piece's title, "I'm Still a Woman."
Tickets are on sale through Eventbrite. For tickets, more information/updates and ways to donate and/or become community partners with Houston Play On Purpose for "I'm Still a Woman," visit houstonplayonpurpose.
