FEATURED EVENT: Native American Powwow
On Friday, April 6, HSD's Title IV Indian Education Program sponsored its annual Powwow. Held at Liberty High School, the event featured a free community dinner, a 3K fun run/walk, craft vendors, guest performers, and more.  One of the main highlights was the Grand Entry, which is led by Native American veterans carrying in the eagle staff and flags, followed by Native American dancers. The powwow is a social gathering featuring dancing, singing and drumming by representatives from various tribes celebrating and honoring their rich heritage and traditions.  A gallery of pictures from this wonderful event is available on our website

Thank you, Volunteers!
April 15-21 is Volunteer Appreciation Week! We could not do what we do without the help and support of our amazing volunteers, so thank you from the bottom of our hearts! To learn more about volunteering in Hillsboro schools, please visit the Volunteering page of our website under the Community drop-down menu.

April 20 Heads-Up
Please know that Friday, April 20, has the potential for low attendance and additional student walkouts, as it is the 19th anniversary of the school shooting in Columbine, CO, as well as a recognized "counterculture holiday" and cannabis celebration day. We are communicating with staff and students in advance of the 20th to reiterate that attendance is expected and required; that smoking or drug use of any kind is not permitted; and that, if students do choose to peacefully walk out, they must remain on campus and return to class within a single class period. For additional information, please visit the Keeping Students Safe page of our website.

Earth Day and Global Youth Services Day

Earth Day is this Sunday, April 22, and there are a variety of clean-up and other environmentally-friendly activities taking place around the region. The non-profit organization SOLVE has a list of projects on its website - many of which are open to youth ages 13 and up (or younger, if accompanied by an adult). Students may also wish to participate in the  Global Youth Services Day habitat restoration event taking place on Saturday, April 21, from 9 a.m. to noon, at Noble Woods Park, 475 SE Century Blvd. Global Youth Services Day is the largest volunteer event in the world, with over 135 countries participating.

TAG You're It! Reminder
Reminder that the District's TAG You're It! enrichment program for TAG-identified students in grades K-6 is taking place on Saturday, April 28, from 9 a.m. to noon, at Witch Hazel Elementary School. Click here to see a flyer with information about course offerings. Please pre-register by Friday, April 20. Contact Brooke Vilante (503-844-1500) with questions.

HSF Phone-A-Thon is April 23-26
The Hillsboro Schools Foundation (HSF) is the only non-profit organization that exists solely to support Hillsboro School District students, staff and schools. The money they raise goes to support innovative grants for teachers, homework clubs for middle school students, STEM kits for elementary schools, high school athletic and activity clubs, and more! When you receive a call from a student the week of April 23, please answer and consider giving! You can also give now by going to the Donations link on HSF's website.
