2018 Future Ready Iowa Summit

The Governor's 2018 Future Ready Iowa Summit was held on April 3, at the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines.  The event brought together leaders from business, industry, government and education.  The summit provided a forum to explore and converse on how to meet the Future Ready Iowa Initiative's goal of having 70 percent of Iowa's workforce with education or training beyond high school by 2025. Guest speakers included Alex Acosta, United States Secretary of Labor,  Governors Asa Hutchinson of Arkansas and John Hickenlooper of Colorado, and Hadi Partovi, CEO of Code.org. The day closed with Governor Reynolds signing of the Future Ready Iowa Act (House File 2458).

North Central 2018-19 Scale-Up Awards Announced!

Last week the Iowa STEM North Central Region awarded 212 educators with one of the STEM Council's STEM Scale-Up Programs which will impact over 9,800 students in the region during the 2018-19 academic year. Email notifications were sent to all applicants April 10, check your inbox if you applied!

The North Central STEM Advisory Board reviewed many applications and had to make some very tough decisions determining which scale-up applications to fund.  Ultimately we were able to fund awards, pending final legislative approval, that will have impact across the region and reach a record number of students.

Just as nine current STEM programs draw to a close for the 2017-2018 school year, the STEM Council selected ten more high-qualified STEM programs from a pool of dozens in January to "scale up" across PreK-12 in Iowa's schools, after-school programs and other educational settings for 2018-2019. Interested educators applied to receive these programs, ranging from building robots and coding programs to conducting agricultural field experiences and learning about STEM careers.

Awarded educators will receive communication from their respective program providers regarding professional development sessions, which will start in July for some programs, how to order m aterials, and any other information needed to successfully implement the STEM program locally.
