ExecMessageMessage from VP for Professional Development

Fred Tugas, VP for Professional Development
Greetings, SACSA!

Seven years ago, I attended my first SACSA annual conference in my hometown of Norfolk, Virginia. I was a brand new professional, working directly after completing my undergraduate work. I was told about the importance of volunteering and decided to scan the conference volunteer opportunities. One hour as a faculty reception greeter? Sounded easy enough - wrote my name and phone number on the line.

Little did I know that this small volunteer opportunity would open so many doors. Within a few hours, I received a phone call to help pick up food and beverages for the reception. Jane Dané and I rode around town to grab vegetable crudité and cheese platters. Once at the reception, I nervously greeted faculty members (hoping they enjoyed my snack selections). Deb Kladviko, SACSA President at that time, warmly invited me to stick around after my shift - and I'm so glad I did. I sat down with Tony Cawthon for the first time, inspired by his commitment to new and aspiring professionals. A few months later, I applied to Clemson's graduate program and started the following fall semester.

This week, the Executive Council will be convening in the same hotel that started my SACSA journey seven years ago. The mid-year meeting is an opportunity for SACSA leadership to get a deep dive into the conference hotel, discuss and tackle association priorities, and approve the annual budget. In my role, I have the opportunity to work with many fantastic volunteer leaders to co-host our signature summer initiatives, New Professionals Institute and Mid-Managers Institute.

Participant applications for NPI and MMI are now open! Please consider applying or sharing with a colleague. I want to thanks Drs. Terry Mena and Becky Spurlock for their leadership with the respective institutes. Furthermore, I am appreciative of Dr. Jay Lambert and Mike Wilkerson's continued partnership through NASPA Region III.

Engagement with SACSA takes one small step. Whether it's referring a friend to join, joining a committee, or greeting faculty with veggie and cheese platters, the opportunities to give back are plentiful. The contributions of volunteers, no matter how big or small, have kept our great Association moving forward for over 70 years. If you are particularly passionate about engaging members in professional development year-round, please feel free to reach out to me directly at [email protected].

Sincerely,
Fred Tugas
Vice President for Professional Development

BylawProposed Bylaw Revisions
Executive Council

Greetings SACSA Members,

Next week you will receive an email about the proposed changes to the SACSA Bylaws from the Executive Council (EC). These proposed revisions specifically focus on the composition of the EC, duties of those who serve on the EC, and the clarification of the duties and responsibilities of standing committees and special positions within the Association.

In accordance with our current bylaws, when needing a bylaws revision outside of the annual conference/meeting, the Association must send the proposed changes to the membership for a vote and keep the vote open for 30 days.

Before voting opens we want to give the membership time to review the proposed changes.  You can review the current bylaws, proposed changes, and rationale by CLICKING HERE

The proposed changes include the following:
  • Including the Presidential Scholar as an ex-officio member of the EC, in that the individual is still appointed, but would not have a vote similar to the Executive Director and Conference Chair.
  • Having the President-Elect serve as the SACSA Foundation liaison.
  • Having the Past President serve as the EC liaison to the Awards & Recognition Committee.
  • Providing more specifics on the duties and responsibilities for standing committees and special positions within the Association.

An email ballot will be sent to you from the Association next week. Thank you for taking the time to review the proposed changes and casting your vote.

Jason Cassidy, Ph.D.
SACSA President

MySACSAStoryMy SACSA Story, Jalesha Turner-Davis
Membership & Recruitment Committee

Jalesha Turner-Davis
Jalesha Turner-Davis was introduced to SACSA by her former supervisor, Phillip Sullivan, and was invited to attend her first conference at Myrtle Beach by her then-supervisor, Erica White, in 2018. While these individuals encouraged Jalesha to join SACSA, it was the wisdom gained in Myrtle Beach by connecting with student affairs professionals at various levels that sold her on the organization. Jalesha shared that the Multicultural Awareness Committee (MAC) excursion at the House of Blues remains a wonderful memory and propelled her to join the MAC Committee.

In addition to her involvement with the MAC Committee, SACSA provided Jalesha the opportunity to present at her first professional conference during our 2019 conference in Raleigh. Jalesha stated, "To have my presentation accepted was an honor and to have an engaged audience was the greatest reward I could ever ask for."

Jalesha serves as an Assistant Hall Director for Georgia State University. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and a minor in Leadership Studies from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville. In May 2020, Jalesha will be graduating with her Master's in Education in Higher Education Administration from Georgia Southern University.

Outside of her work, studies, and SACSA involvement, Jalesha loves to bargain shop and has recently gotten into using apps to coupon. Once she completes her degree in May, Jalesha looks forward to taking couponing to the next level by getting newspapers to do "real couponing."

Jalesha finds that SACSA is a professional organization that has a family feel amongst all members, while motivating everyone to get involved through various opportunities. As she progresses in her career, Jalesha is looking forward to continuing her involvement with SACSA, while also mentoring new professionals in the SACSA family.

NPINPI Applications Open
New Professionals Institute Committee

New Professionals Institute (NPI) is the preeminent professional development opportunity for new student affairs professionals in the south (we consider 'new professionals' anyone with five years or fewer of full-time experience in Student Affairs). Co-sponsored by NASPA Region III and SACSA, NPI is an intensive, interactive week of learning, sharing, networking and professional and personal development. This unique opportunity allows new professionals to draw on their first years of experience to improve their effectiveness and to learn from others. It is a time of professional and personal renewal and assists new professionals in the development of their careers. NPI requires a commitment by the new professional to work intensively over five days with other new professionals and a team of more-seasoned faculty members.
