Money & Real Life:  Resilience through Honesty
Rev. Dr. Roger Jones

How we handle money can be a source of insight about our spiritual approach to life as we go through the stages of life. With stories about family life and overlooked inheritances, Roger Jones invites us to think about our personal relationships, our sense of self, our money, and those funny places where they overlap.

Our preacher this week is conducting a pulpit exchange with our minister, who is speaking in Sacramento.  Rev. Dr. Roger Jones is senior minister of the UU Society of Sacramento, which he began serving as family minister in 2008. Earlier he served congregations in Sunnyvale, Minnesota, Massachusetts, and Indiana.  He is on the boards of his YMCA and the UUA's Pacific Central District and is an adjunct faculty member at Starr King School for the Ministry.  He has a Doctor of Ministry in congregational studies from Pacific School of Religion.

70th Anniversary!
Our very special anniversary weekend went so well and so smoothly thanks in no small part to Joan Smith and Kat Braeman. To date, we have collected about $27,000 in honor of this special year. Pictures of the event will be posted to our web site soon. If you took pictures or video that you would like to contribute, please let us know!

Social Justice Film
Race: the Power of an Illusion - Film and Discussion co-sponsored by Social Justice and Adult Education Committees

February 9    Episode III "The House We Live In"

LOCATION CHANGE: We will be meeting at 12:15 in the Clara Barton Room.

In these sessions, we will view and discuss each of the hour-long segments of this powerful DVD that explores what race really is. In the words of the producer, the "hope is to clear away the biological underbrush and leave starkly visible the underlying social, economic, and political conditions that disproportionally channel advantages and opportunities to white people."

The discussions will be led by The Reverend Theresa Novak and Anne Spatola.

Breeze Training at UUCM!

Are you tired of your directory being out of date as soon as you download it? Do you want to be able to see your own contact information and even update it? Can't remember how much you contributed? Want all this information at your fingertips, and even on your smartphone if you have one?

We have the training for you! On Sunday, February 16 at Noon in the Fireside Room, Rev. Marcus and our administrator, Janette Morrow, will conduct a training to make all the above possible in Breeze, our new membership app. This will make your life easier when you want to call or text your friends and committee members! And you won't have to wait for Janette to call you back with that one phone number your can't find! Join us! Please plan to bring your wifi-enabled laptop, tablet, or smartphone to the training.

In the meantime, please use the links below to establish your account and download the app to your phone. For the phone app, our domain name is uumarin, which you'll be asked to enter during the setup process.

Remarkable People Returns:
Mark Your Calendar for Friday, February 21!

This ongoing series gives us time to learn about each other from the interesting stories of individual lives in an evening of sharing and community.

Each person talks briefly, followed by time for questions and general sociability and some sustaining snacks.

Jean Bee Chan and Ken Ross will be our Remarkable People for February.

You might know Jean Bee Chan as the energetic and effective fundraiser who has made our recent Auctions shine with success. But you may not know the story of her childhood journey from Southern China to life in China, Hong Kong and then to the US in 1956. You can also find out about her recent completion of an illustrated children's book.

And you probably know that Ken Ross is Jean Bee's husband (and also an agent of auction success). A Professor Emeritus from the University of Oregon, he might also tell a story about how families can be full of surprises. He didn't become a Mormon even though he grew up in Salt Lake City.

Come on February 21 to learn more.

Watch this space for more details: We will have other Remarkables to learn from on March 20, April 17, and May 15.

Help Feed Our Homeless Neighbors

On February 11, UUCM will be providing food for the Street Chaplaincy Dinner. Approximately 80 homeless people attend these dinners.

We partner with congregants from Rodef Sholom, who provide the main course.

We will be responsible for salads, dessert and "take home" foods.

If you would like to supply some foods for the dinner guests to take, please bring them to the UUCM kitchen on Sunday, Feb 9. Suggested items are tangerines, apples, hard boiled eggs, string cheese, cookies, nutrition bars.

Rep. Jared Huffman at UUCM

On Thursday, February 20 at 6:00 pm, UUCM will host Rep. Jared Huffman to present him with the John Kouns Award for his efforts on human rights, civil rights, and the environment. A reception will follow at 7:00 pm.

A $20 donation is requested.  Parking is limited!  Please carpool.

Love on the Line

The Poetry Connection's feature on Valentine's Day is the Open-Mic Reading, Love on the Line, February 14 at 7:00 pm in the Fireside Room. Bring a poem you love (one-page maximum) that you'll read aloud and something sweet you love to eat to add to Jerene De Laney's world-famous red velvet cake for refreshments.

Bringing someone you love is recommended, but not required.

Classic Book Group

The Classic Book Group will next meet on Wednesday, February 19, at 1:30 pm in the Clara Barton Room to discuss George Eliot's Middlemarch, Chapters ("Books") 1 through 4. The Classic Book Group will subsequently meet on Wednesday, March 18, at 1:30 pm in the Clara Barton to discuss Books 5 through 8 of George Eliot's Middlemarch. (Middlemarch is a long book.)
