National Donate Life
Awareness Month
Saving Lives. Strengthening Communities. Helping Families
Many Californians want to help but do not know how. They may not know how living donation works, or may have heard that living kidney donors must be blood relatives of their recipients. And they may be surprised to know that some living kidney donors can help not just one, but many, people receive a new lease on life by initiating a chain of kidney transplants.

Seeking to help more California residents receive life-saving kidney transplants, our government and transplant community leaders invite Californians to be educated about the need for kidney donation, get informed about the risks and benefits of being a living kidney donor, and be guided through the donation process by our state’s world-class kidney transplant centers.

Please click below to learn more.
Now in its seventeenth year, the Donate Life Run/Walk supports OneLegacy Foundation’s mission to save and heal lives by inspiring and advancing donation and transplantation of organs and tissues through research, public education, and honoring donors whose legacies live on.

The Donate Life Run/Walk is a wonderful opportunity for companies and residents of the area to join together and take action to help
save lives and strengthen families.

Mosquitoes are the most dangerous creature in the world! Mosquitoes kill nearly 725,000 people a year because they can transmit deadly viruses like Malaria, West Nile virus, and dengue with just a bite. All Californians play an important role in protecting the public health of their community and should take simple steps to reduce the risk of mosquito-transmitted diseases. Protect yourself and your community by preventing mosquito breeding in your home.

To raise awareness and educate Californians about the public health threat mosquitoes pose to our communities, the California Legislature declared April 21-27, 2019 as Mosquito Awareness Week. Join your local vector control district and public health agencies across the state for  #MOSQUITOWEEK by sharing on social media and encouraging your family, friends, and neighbors to take preventative steps against mosquitoes.

Two of the best ways to avoid contracting mosquito-transmitted diseases are 1) prevent mosquitoes from laying eggs and 2) avoid mosquito bites by wearing repellent. Use a repellent with ONE of these ingredients. #FightTheBite #MosquitoWeek

California Spring Citrus Gardening
California is known for its colorful citrus trees, and taking proper care of them is important to ensure these trees stay healthy and fruitful for years to come. In addition to watering, pruning and fertilizing your citrus tree this spring, be sure to inspect your trees for signs of a dangerous pest called the Asian citrus psyllid and deadly citrus tree disease called Huanglongbing (HLB).

The pest can spread the disease as it feeds on citrus tree leaves. HLB is not dangerous to humans or pets, but it is fatal for citrus trees and has no cure. For more information, please visit CaliforniaCitrusThreat.org.
You may have noticed or will notice additional SCE crews doing inspections, infrastructure improvement work and vegetation management in your community. SCE is doing this in all high fire risk areas—approximately 35 percent of their service area. SCE understands our activities may be disruptive when they do this important safety work and will do everything we can to minimize the impact to you.

SCE appreciates your support and cooperation, as this is part of our ongoing commitment to safety and supporting California's fight against wildfires.
A few things to know about the inspections:
  • Infrastructure inspections have been an ongoing part of our regular operations for many years.
  • Some of our equipment may be on your property. In these instances, we would appreciate your cooperation in allowing crews to safely access the equipment. Some inspections may require SCE to return at a later date to perform maintenance or upgrades to equipment and/or the pruning or removal of vegetation.
  • SCE is proactively identifying, pruning, or removing trees outside required clearances that may pose a potential risk to the company's power lines.
  • In some cases, SCE may need to schedule a maintenance outage so our crews can work safely. We will attempt to notify you by phone, text, email and mail at least 72 hours prior to the outage.

These inspections are part of a larger plan to further fortify the electric system against the increasing threat of extreme conditions driven by climate change and the impacts of wildfires if they occur. For additional information about how SCE is addressing the threat of wildfires, visit  sce.com/wildfire/ .

How to Recognize SCE Employees or SCE Approved Contractors
SCE crews and approved contractors performing this work will carry identification badges. SCE vehicles will feature the company's logo. Contractor vehicles will have SCE "approved contractor" signage.
PUBLIC SAFETY TIPS
Tips for Homeowners to Prevent Crime this Spring
In your home
Just because you are at home does not mean you are immune from theft. People who have been working in their yard or garden have gone back inside their home to find belongings taken.
  • It is a good idea to keep your doors and windows locked.
  • When in the backyard lock your front door, and vice versa.
  • Do not leave your garage door open with the contents easily accessible. If you are working in the backyard, keep your garage door shut.
  • Consider installing an alarm system.

In your yard
During the warm weather, outdoor belongings are often targeted by thieves. And do not give thieves easy access to tools that can help them break into your home.
  • If you keep ladders out, be sure to chain or padlock them. A ladder can be used to gain entry to second story windows. If at all possible, store the ladders in a shed or garage.
  • Put tools away after a day of yard work. Lock them in a shed or in an enclosed garage area. Screwdrivers, hammers, and pry bars can be used to break into your home, garage, or vehicle.
  • Use a chain or a cable to lock your patio furniture.
  • Always put bicycles away in a garage or shed. If you do not have either, lock them to something that can’t be moved.
  • Trim trees and bushes that could conceal burglars, especially around windows and doors.
  • Keep your yard maintained to give the house a lived-in appearance. Cut grass, rake leaves, and remove dead branches and debris.
  • Install motion-sensitive outside lights to brighten dark areas around doors, windows, and parked vehicles.
  • Ensure your fence and gate are in good repair: check for holes and damage that may need repair. Keep your gate locked at all times and ensure the lock works properly. A lock or latch that self closes and can be padlocked when you are away is recommended.
  • Install privacy slats in chain link fences.

In your community
To help prevent crime in your neighborhood, a variation of the Golden Rule applies: look out for your neighbors as you would like them to look out for you.
  • Get to know your neighbors. Become familiar with the routine in your neighborhood, and keep an eye out for suspicious activity.
  • Leave keys and emergency phone numbers with a trusted neighbor.
  • If you’re going on vacation, ask a neighbor to keep an eye on your home and to pick up newspapers and mail.
  • Keep up appearances: a well-tended neighborhood is less attractive to criminals and vandals.
  • Get involved in crime prevention programs.
