Dear Branch Friends and Supporters,
This month we have an interesting confluence of two exhibitions related to urban design. At The Branch we know that design surrounds us all day, every day, and we explore the impact of design and what influences it. In
A City Personified
, the historical maps displayed from the City of Richmond archives help us examine the design of our City and how a city evolves over time … sometimes by design and sometimes in spite of design.
We have also extended the
Monumental Youth
exhibition as a complement to the process of thinking about urban design. High school students in Richmond were asked to tackle one of the most controversial topics facing Richmonders, and many other cities in this country. They did that in a thoughtful and moving way when asked to think about what personal hero might deserve a monument if they were designing Monument Avenue for a future Richmond. We invite you to think about their designs and artist statements. Who would inspire you to design a monument?? It’s a worthy question, and they’ve answered it in ways that are both engaging and thought provoking.
