Mason's Message: Thank you for your Thoughts

We recently took part in an online conversation through ThoughtExchange. More than 2,000 people (parents, community members, staff and students) participated and provided us with valuable feedback. Your thoughts have been reviewed by me and by members of our executive team and staff. We are now excited to share the results with you via our Results Website.

As you will see, the top priorities from you included the following: Safety and Security, Facilities, Student Wellness and Support and Curriculum and Electives/College and Career Readiness. These priorities are an affirmation of what we have been working on throughout our district, and what we will use to continue to guide our LCAP.

Visit our results website to learn more about the top priorities in our schools, and see the other thoughts that resounded with people. You can also visit the “LCAP" tab on our website to learn more about our LCAP process.

Thank you for contributing to this important conversation. Your participation in this process was invaluable.

BOHS Robotics Team Debuts Their First Autonomous Robot in Over a Decade

Congratulations to the BOHS Robotics Team who competed in the For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) Robotics Competition, where they earned Rookie of the Year honors and qualified for the National Championships in Houston later this month.

Since the beginning of January, the team has been hard at work, volunteering countless hours designing, wiring, constructing, funding, organizing, and programming their robot. The team is made up of two divisions: a business division responsible for fundraising and community outreach and a programming team responsible for building the software using Java. Not only did the club commit to their project, but their advisor, BOHS Science Teacher Kurtis Chan, played a crucial role in guiding the students.

Their hard work has paid off and we can't wait to see how they perform at the National Championship in Houston. Stay tuned for a follow-up story!
National Afterschool Association Annual Convention

In mid March, Brea Junior High Principal Kelly Kennedy and Child Development Services Expanded Learning Coordinator Meredith White presented at the National Afterschool Association Annual Convention in Atlanta, Georgia.

They shared the BOUSD story with approximately 30 Expanded Learning and Education Professionals on how we integrate 21st Century Technology into our Child Development and Teen Centers.
Unified Sports at BOHS

Brea Olinda High School hosted its’ second Unified Sports Competition in which able-bodied students participated in a lunchtime cheerleading and indoor soccer match with their special needs peers. The event, co-sponsored by The Special Olympics, featured a packed gym of enthusiastic supporters. It was another great activity that came down to the last few seconds for the second year in a row. Here is a link to view the EVENT HIGHLIGHTS.
PBIS Asian Delegation Visit

A delegation of educators from Hong Kong APBS (International Association of Positive Behavior Support) made a special visit to Brea Olinda High School, Brea Canyon High School and Laurel Elementary Magnet School of Innovation and Career Exploration last month to observe the great work our schools are doing when it comes to our district-wide implementation of PBIS. BOUSD was one of two districts the delegation visited in Orange County as we came highly recommended from the Orange County Department of Education for our great work on implementing PBIS at all of our school sites.

Laurel Magnet School of Innovation & Career Exploration Principal Heather Bojorquez had some fun with her students as they turned her into a real life ice cream sundae.

Mrs. Bojorquez promised her students that if they beat last year's
jog-a-thon goal, the top three winners from each grade level could turn her into a sundae. Well, they beat that goal by $8,000 raising $26,000 to help support their magnet school programs.
