Outstanding Students Selected for
Governor's Honors Program
Four students from Douglas County will head to Berry College in Rome, GA, for four weeks this summer to follow their passion. The students were selected for the Governor's Honors Program (GHP) in a highly competitive process.

Najaah Patterson, pictured on left, is an 11th grade student at Chapel Hill High School. She will study Dance at GHP. Following high school, she hopes to attend the Juilliard School, a performing arts conservatory in New York. "I feel like GHP will be an incredible learning experience and will allow me to be with people who are just as passionate as I am in the art of dance."

Roxy Bridges, center, is a 10th grade student at New Manchester High School who will attend GHP to study Visual Arts. She plans to attend a fine arts college after high school. "I look forward to spending time with others who are passionate about the same things I'm passionate about."

Jabari Lawrence, an 11th grade student at Alexander High School, will study Chemistry at GHP. His top three college choices at this point are Olin College of Engineering, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Georgia Institute of Technology. "I would like to go above and beyond the brief classes in high school and be able to explore subjects that interest me. I look forward to participating in the unique opportunities available at GHP."

Not pictured is Sarah Khan, 11th grade student at Douglas County High School. Sarah was selected to study Social Studies at GHP. Amarion Peterkin-Trent from Douglas County High School was selected as an alternate to study Music at GHP this summer.

The Georgia Governor's Honors Program offers talented juniors and seniors a residential program with instruction that is significantly different from the typical high school classroom and that is designed to provide students with academic, cultural, and social enrichment necessary to become the next generation of global critical thinkers, innovators, and leaders.
5th Graders Profit from Stock Market Game
Fifth grade PC students from Annette Winn Elementary School turned a virtual $100,000 into $109,338.50 with their smart picks in the Stock Market Game Challenge! Their big profit over just 10 weeks earned them first place in the region and in Congressional District 13 in the Elementary School Division. Pictured are team members Maliek Sheriffe, Ramari Cairo, and Meylyn Lopez. Their teacher is Mrs. J'Lene Williams.
Students Applauded for Anti-Bullying Campaign
A marketing campaign by three high school students impressed Good Works Project founder Don Webb so much that he featured their work in a recent video.

Chapel Hill High School DECA members Bethany McCullough, Jordan Washington, and Wyatt Griffin developed a creative marketing campaign for a DECA state competition. After researching the problem of bullying, they developed a campaign to increase awareness and to decrease the occurrence of bullying.

The group presented its "Made to Stick" campaign at the Georgia DECA State Conference in February and placed third. They will advance to the DECA International Competition in April in Orlando.

Take a look at their creative way to encourage students affected by bullying.
The Good Works Project is a non-profit social enterprise created to encourage people to serve those in need and do "good works" for a world that desperately needs it. See more at goodworksproject.org.
State Winners Order Championship Rings
Douglas County High School seniors Sydney Roe and Duncan Helms (not pictured) and freshman Brooke Blacknall selected rings from the Herff Jones representative to commemorate winning the Tome Society's State Reading Bowl Championship this year.

These three students read all 20 books and took three tests throughout the year to qualify for the face-to-face competition at the Tomecon event, where they won first place.
8th Graders Commit to High School Magnet Programs
On March 28 Mason Creek Middle School celebrated its 8th grade students who will be attending a magnet program in one of Douglas County's high schools next year.

Students at the first annual Magnet Signing Day were accepted into magnet programs including Alexander's Liberal Arts AP Capstone, Douglas County's IB, the Academy at CCI, and Lithia Springs' STEM program.
Athletes Honored for Positive Outlook

Congratulations to soccer player Juan Ochoa from Alexander High School (pictured) and all the other regional winners from Douglas County for the Positive Athlete award!

Other regional winners include Freddie Allen, III, from Chapel Hill High School for Track and Field, McKenna Croft from Douglas County High School for Cross Country, and Bryan King from Lithia Springs High School for Golf.

The Positive Athlete program recognizes students based more on their character than their athletic performance. Students are recognized for overcoming difficult circumstances, giving back to their schools and communities, and having an infectious positive attitude.
