Lyon's mission:  Developing Lifelong Learners and Leaders
May 31, 2018
Dear Lyon Families,

Within this newsletter you will find end of year goal updates, celebrations, and focus areas for the 2018-2019 school year.  Lyon staff are looking forward to a few new initiatives and minor schedule changes to work to increase mastery for even more of our Lyon students.  Take a look at all the hard work both your child and Lyon teachers have put into 2017-2018.  We look forward to continued growth in the upcoming school year!
School Performance and School Improvement Plan

Academic Goals
Each quarter Lyon staff monitor student growth in all academic areas, with goals specifically set in writing and math.  Lyon's goal is for 80% of students to meet grade level standards in both these areas.

We are proud to report that for the 2017-2018 school year:
  • 73.2% of students met grade level standards in writing
  • 85.5% of students met grade level standards in math
Focus for 2018-2019:
  • Lyon teachers will continue to receive professional development in the area of writing instruction
  • Response to Intervention (RTI) time will be embedded into Lyon's daily schedule to allow additional time and support for ALL Lyon students.
Attendance
Lyon counselors and special class teachers assist Lyon in monitoring student attendance.  Students are encouraged to remain above 90% attendance throughout the year, with a goal of 93% of Lyon students' attendance at or above 90%. Lyon also set a goal for end of year average daily attendance (ADA) to be at or above 96%.

We are proud to report that for the 2017-2018 school year:
  • Lyon ended the year with 92.6% of students at school 90% of the time.
  • Lyon's end of year ADA was 95.52%.
Focus for 2018-2019:
  • Lyon's attendance action team will explore options to celebrate students meeting 98% attendance monthly.

Discipline
Lyon's PBIS action team monitored monthly attendance, focusing on reteaching specific behavior expectations based on monthly office referral data.  Lyon's goal was to reduce office discipline referrals (ODRs) by 10% in comparison to the 2016-2017 school year.  Total ODRs for the year could not exceed 153 in order to meet the goal.
  • Lyon's total ODRs for the 2017-2018 school year were 191.
Focus for 2018-2019:
  • Lyon will remove signature cards and replace with an alternate incentive for "doing the right thing when no one is watching".  This will better connect with Lyon's Leader In Me initiative and allow teachers freedoms in planning a "menu" of reinforcers tailored to grade level.
  • Lyon will continue to monitor ODR data to reteach expectations in areas of concern.

Lyon 7 Habits Facebook Challenge:

We want to see how Lyon Leaders use the habits this summer!  Through June we are looking for ways Lyon Leaders sharpen their saw.  It's important that leaders balance work and play...too much of one is not healthy!

Just follow us on Facebook @lyonelementaryschool for additional details.

Thank you for making the 2017-2018 great! We hope your family has a wonderful and restful summer.  The Lyon office is currently hosting summer school but will be closed from June 27-July 13. Check your email at the beginning of August for communication about the 2018-2019 school year. Class lists will be posted around this time as well.

Enjoy your summer!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Mitchell and Mrs. Gove
