Newsletter    June 2018
Stone Ridge Library Fair

Saturday, June 9 from 10am - 3pm!
Sunday, June 10, The "Bag Sale" from 10am - 2pm
Monday, June 11, from 3 - 6pm Grab Bag*

The 72nd Annual Library Fair will be held on Saturday, June 9 from 10 am to 3 pm, rain or shine, on the Library grounds. The festivities will include a giant book sale, plant sale, children's activities, craft and gift booths, food and drink, and entertainment all day. The Bag Sale, offering a bag of books for $10 will take place on Sunday from 10-2.
* New this year! On Monday from 3 - 6pm leftover books will be offered for FREE. Early arrivals will not be accommodated because we will be sorting for Fair Day 2019 until 3pm.

The main event of the Fair is Books! Displayed under the large striped tent, the selection will include everything from novels to history, cook books, biographies, poetry, art and specialty "coffee table" books, and children's books.

Flowering annuals, perennials, herbs and grasses, donated by local businesses as well as garden and house plants donated from home gardens will overflow the plant tent. Pots and labels are available now at the garden gate for home gardeners who would like to donate. Sensational hybrid daylilies will be on sale again this year.

Cherries of Stone Ridge will join the Library team again this year with favorite summertime fare. And show stopping strawberry shortcake, root beer floats and cotton candy will evoke memories of summers past. Home baked treats, coffee and tea will round out the menu.

Our music begins at 10 with Trio Mio, followed by Breakaway with Robin Baker at 11, then BLOOM directed by Debbie Lan at Noon, Cheryl & Kurt at 1, and wrap up with the Rondout Valley High School Jazz Band, directed by Randolph Loder.

Gifts and tableware, as well as art and jewelry will be available for purchase, and the Stone Ridge Saturday Knitters will be on hand to demonstrate their craft and sell their wares.

Parking will be available at the High Meadow School, Key Bank, Express Tech and the Marbletown Community Center. The NYS Troopers, Kingston Barracks and the Marbletown Rescue Squad will be available for traffic control and assistance.

Volunteers are the heart of the Fair; there is still time to sign up at stoneridgelibrary.volunteerlocal.com/volunteer.

For information, please visit stoneridgelibrary.org or the SRL Facebook page.

Plant Donations
The Plant Booth would love your plant donations!

Kay Sutka, our plant chairperson has made a couple of signs which are posted at the garden gate. There are also empty pots for your convenience. New this year is a little  I.D. card that will help the plant tent volunteers and buyers to understand the care. You can print it out or pick them up at the Library.
  • Take home pot(s) and ID card.
  • Fill them with your beautiful annuals/perennials/herbs, grasses, house plants, etc.
  • Return the information card(s) with your plant(s).
  • Drop them off Friday, June 1-Friday, June 8 to the Library.
  • We will water the plants until the Library Fair.
Foundation Tea
The Stone Ridge Library Foundation was delighted to host a tea and celebration honoring Priscilla Derven and Stephen MacDonald, a couple who have long dedicated themselves to making the Stone Ridge Library the center of life in Marbletown. More than 50 people applauded their contributions at the May 6 event, which brought in more than $3,400.

The proceeds of the tea will help complete the preservation, restoration and modernization of the twin 200-year-old library buildings. They're targeted for the last major project, enlarging the Children's Room. Contractors are enclosing the existing cold storage area (mainly a narrow porch) between the 1798 and 1811 buildings; this will provide a larger program room, a small kitchenette and an ADA-compliant restroom.

Ms. Derven and Mr. MacDonald received their awards from the hands of last year's honorees, Barbara Cazakoff and Vivi Hlavsa.

Guests enjoyed a variety of teas, sandwiches and desserts, along with a lot of good company. The Library put on display historical artifacts from its extensive collection, as well as historical information about the village and the library buildings.

The Library Foundation thanks Anya Rogers, Micaela Warren, Hazel Parker-Myers, Claire Goldstein, Lara Goldstein, and Emily Rosakranse for helping at the event, as well as Emmanuel's Marketplace, Adam's Fairacre Farms and the Stone Ridge Rite Aid. Also many thanks to the Green Cottage in High Falls for the floral arrangements and corsages, as well as Stone Ridge Wine & Spirits. Special thanks to the Ulster County Historical Society, as well as to Harney & Sons Teas in Millbrook for a fine selection of teas.
Further tax-deductible donations to this project - or to honor Priscilla Derven and Stephen MacDonald - can be made at stoneridgelibrary.org/donate.
Preschool Story Time
Tuesdays: 10:00-11:00
  June 5, 12
For ages 3-5

Ms. Celeste's Story times are growing in popularity by leaps and bounds. She is imaginative, fun, energetic, and captures the imaginations of our littlest patrons. Story time is a exciting and fanciful introduction to the library, and a great opportunity to meet area children and parents . The Preschool story hour is open to children ages 3-5

The preschool story time is brought to you in partnership with the Marbletown Youth Commission.  The children's room appreciates their continued support of our library's preschool programming.
Tea Time Book Group
Wednesday, June 13
4pm in the Biography Room

Our book for June is Mr. Dickens and his Carol: a novel of Christmas Past by Samantha Silva. Charles Dickens is not feeling the Christmas spirit. His newest book is an utter flop, the critics have turned against him, relatives near and far hound him for money. While his wife plans a lavish holiday party for their ever-expanding family and circle of friends, Dickens has visions of the poor house.

This month we will be reading Locked In by Marcia Muller. Shot in the head by an unknown assailant, San Francisco private eye Sharon McCone finds herself trapped by locked-in syndrome: almost total paralysis but an alert, conscious mind. Since the late-night attack occurred at her agency's offices, the natural conclusion was that it was connected to one of the firm's cases. As Sharon lies in her hospital bed, furiously trying to break out of her body's prison and discover her attacker's identity, all the members of her agency fan out to find the reason why she was assaulted. Meanwhile, Sharon becomes a locked-in detective, evaluating the clues from her staff's separate investigations and discovering unsettling truths that could put her life in jeopardy again. As the case draws to a surprising and even shocking conclusion, Sharon's husband, Hy, must decide whether or not to surrender to his own violent past and exact fatal vengeance when the person responsible is identified.

KNITTING GROUP

Every Saturday
10am-noon

The Stone Ridge Library Knitters meet every Saturday morning from 10am - 12noon. All ages and experience levels can join us and drop-in knitters are also welcome. We each bring our own supplies and do our own work, but one of the best things about us is that whatever obstacle or confusion you might encounter, you're likely to receive as much comment and advice as you need to get where you're going with a project. Some of us can help toward the repair of knitted or crocheted items too.

The group is sociable and lively, and our conversation and sharing is just as wide-ranging as our projects. We are especially interested in the UFOs (Un-Finished Objects) that members bring in and love the show and tell of projects under way and being finished, new or old, simple or complex. Though knitting is our love and mainstay, we graciously adapt ourselves to stray crocheters and those of us who simply must take to the hook when the spirit moves. We share articles, magazines and books on knitting. Donations of yarn to the Library get made up into items for sale at the Library Fair and during the winter holidays for the benefit of the Library. Some of us also knit things for local hospitals or for the U.S. troops.
