St. Michael's Academy
 :

After the busyness of Catholic Schools Week, it was nice to get back into a simple work week. The students and teachers are definitely hard at work. Traditionally, third quarter tends to be the academically toughest of all quarters, as most of the curriculum covered is new material for the students. Next Friday we'll be sending home progress reports. I guess we'll find out then how everyone is doing!

Along with the challenge of new academic material, St. Michael's Academy has also endured its fair share of illness!  We've got one week to go before vacation.  I recommend a lot of rest, water and hand washing to see us through to the end of next week.

Enjoy a restful weekend!

Peace and God's blessings,

Ms. Ann E. Dougal
Principal

PRESCHOOL ENROLLMENT FOR NEXT YEAR

If you have a sibling of a current student that you are considering enrolling for preschool next year, please do so as soon as possible . Our preschool classrooms are filling up very quickly and siblings of current students have first priority over new students (if we know about them). We have several new families waiting to hear if we will have a slot for them. Please note that the 3 days slots in the PreK-4 classrooms have all been filled by our current PreK-3 students who are moving up.  We do have 5 day and 2 day slots available. There are also limited PreK-3 slots available.

To complete an application, please go to our website, smaspringfield.org. The "apply now" button is located on the left side of the homepage. When completed, you will receive an email with the additional items needed to complete the application.

Thank you!

Perfect Attendance

Good Attendance Pays Off !

Congratulations to our perfect attendance dress-down winners! In order to qualify for the weekly drawing, a student must have no absences, tardiness or early dismissals the previous week of school. We select one from PreK - 2nd grade, one from 3rd - 5th grade and one from 6th - 8th grade.  Here are our recent winners:

      Olivia - Gr. 2A                                 Alan - Gr. 3B

Rafael - Gr. 7A

What Do You Want to Be?

That is one of the questions the Kindergarten children have been discussing this week. They have been learning about "needs" and "wants" and why people work!

To investigate this topic they interviewed other students in school. Here are some of the results! Connor, in third grade, wants to be an Olympic swimmer. Cole, in eighth grade, wants to be an American League Hockey player. Sophia, also in eighth, is thinking of becoming a pediatrician. Justice, in fifth grade, would like to be a professional baseball player. Maggie also in fifth grade, would like to be an elementary school teacher. Carly, in third grade, aspires to be a dancer. Jayce, in Kindergarten, thinks being a police officer would be a great job. And Shea thinks being a librarian would be fun! Only time will tell if their dreams come true!

The children decided that the most important "needs" are food, clothing, and shelter. The list of "wants" as you can imagine was much longer. They all agreed that it takes a job and earning money to provide for the needs and wants.

Our conclusion is that we can be anything, and do anything, as long as we try our very best and don't give up!

 Mathcounts

SMA Places in Top 10 at Mathcounts!

It is that time again when the smell of mathematics is in the air!

On February 1st,  St. Michael's Academy competed against the best and brightest of the Connecticut Valley in the annual Mathcounts competition. The students who represented St. Michael's Academy are eighth graders, Keegan and Quaid and seventh graders, John and Gia.

For the last four months, these students and others have trained with problems that test their mathematical knowledge and add a little fun to math. Some of the topics include factorials, permutations, bases, right triangles, sequences, combinations, radicals, simplifying, and the Sieve of Eratosthenes. Our students did very well and placed 7th and Keegan was in the top 25 mathletes.

At St. Michael's, our Mathcounts Club emphasizes problem solving skills included in the frameworks of middle-school mathematics. The subject matter of Mathcounts includes geometry, number theory, and algebra. In addition, the program is designed to increase enthusiasm for math and engage students using a variety of math activities for all levels. The only requirement is to be open-minded about math and learn to have fun with it!

Congratulations team!

100th Day of School

Turn On The Creativity With The
100th Day Of School!

The students had fun this week celebrating the 100th day of school!  Prek 4C celebrated the 100th day of school with some "100" themed centers. The students colored 100 balloons, built with 100 cups, designed with 100 shapes, and constructed 100 legos. They had a blast!

Bryson in grade 2 celebrated making it to 100 days by creating a new SMA shirt with 100 eyes!
