www.idahosbdc.org), presented the State Star Award to Bryan Matsuoka, Regional Director, at the annual Idaho SBDC Professional Development Conference.
Celebrating 23 years with the Idaho SBDC in Twin Falls, Bryan was awarded the State Star under the criteria established by the Idaho SBDC: Serve, Respect, Discover and Persevere. In the past twelve months, Bryan has helped create 90 jobs in the south central region of Idaho and continues to challenge his team to make valuable connections with business owners in the community. He has continuously cultivated and fostered a strong relationship with the Dean at the College of Southern Idaho, with his team in Twin Falls, and many clients he has coached in the community. More recently, Bryan spearheaded a bus tour consisting of media and stakeholders to showcase local businesses that have continued to grow with the assistance of the SBDC.
"The Idaho Small Business Development Center thrives on employing leaders that can make a connection with business owners and develop a plan to help them succeed," stated Doug Covey, Idaho SBDC State Director. "Bryan has played an intricate role for the SBDC. The College of Southern Idaho Foundation and Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) Department co-hosted a signing ceremony on Wednesday, May 1. The ceremony was held to recognize 2019 High School Graduates who received a College of Southern Idaho STEM scholarship. Each scholarship recipient plans to major in a STEM related field and will begin classes during the fall 2019 semester.

The CSI Rad Tech Program is grateful to Turn Key Medical, Inc. of Meridian, Idaho, for donating a $16,980 2012 RadPro mobile x-ray machine to replace the program's old 1979 GE mobile X-Ray machine. Since the inception of the CSI Rad Tech Program in 2002, Turn-Key Medical, has been a key industry training partner. Since the inception of Turn-Key Medical, Inc., more than 30 years ago by founder James F. Rowell, Chairman of the Board, their customer-base has grown to include major hospitals and clinics throughout Idaho and surrounding states along with several other college-based Rad Tech programs. Turn-Key Medical has relationships with a wide variety of medical imaging manufacturers, including Canon Medical Systems, Agfa Healthcare, Hologic, Inc., Ziehm Imaging, Medicom, Orthoscan, NovaRad, Accuray, Carestream, Perkins Healthcare Technologies, Vital. Jake Kerley and Stacey Mitchell, both executives at Turn Key Medical serve on the CSI Radiologic Technology Program Advisory Committee.

The CSI Communication Department announced the winners of the 2
nd
Semi-Annual Speakers' Showcase that occurred on Thursday night, May 2, 2019.
The Speakers' Showcase presented outstanding CSI students' speeches. Their Communication professors and instructors nominated students for their exceptional speeches presented in their Communication 101 classes. Once the students were nominated, Communication faculty chose the top 5 students to perform their speeches in front of a live audience.
The winners were the following:

- 3rd place: Matt McClimans
Though these were the three students that won the showcase, the other 2 students should be acknowledge for their stellar speaking skills. They are listed in alphabetical order:

Enjoy nature for 300 minutes..
The "Tree Hugger" Mini Challenge invites you to enjoy nature for 300 minutes over the next 30 days - about 10 minutes per day. Choose something you like doing. Enjoy lunch on a park bench or take a hike on a walking trail. Go fishing, boating, camping, or to the beach. You can get your 300 minutes all in one day or spread it out over the next 30 days. Both options have their advantages.
Being in nature is therapeutic. It reduces stress, improves mental health, and increases mindfulness. Even a few minutes of sitting with nature transitions your mind into a relaxed state, which reduces blood pressure. Reconnection with nature can help us reconnect with ourselves, and help us remember who we are and what's really important to us, easing feelings of isolation and anxiety. Being in nature also reminds us that we're not just individuals - we're part of a larger, beautiful world.

The College of Southern Idaho is now accepting registrations for this summer's Music Fest, which runs June 10 - 14, 2019, at the CSI Fine Arts Center. This week-long summer camp on the beautiful campus provides opportunities for students of all levels to be immersed in music making.
The daily schedule includes seven hours of hands-on instruction laid out to thoroughly engage students from beginning to end. Exceptional faculty from across the state work closely with you in small and large ensemble settings, as well as in daily master classes and sectionals. The listening lab brings the theory and history of music to life. Each afternoon, students have the chance to shine alongside their faculty mentors at the camp's performance spotlight. A focused study is available in strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion, piano, jazz, and voice and private lessons and a wide range of elective areas are available to round out the camp experience.
The week's learning culminates with student recitals and a Gala concert for friends, family, and community to enjoy. CSI Music Fest promises to be an unforgettable experience where students build life-long friendships through the power of music making.
Tuition for Music Fest is
$250, and must be paid in full by May 24.
This fee covers all program costs for students, including instructional materials. Other optional items such as photos and private lessons are available for an additional cost. A limited number of needs-based scholarships are available.

Intro to Resistance & Strength Training for Young Athletes

This course will introduce young athletes to safe exercises in the weight room, taught by NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist Travis Bunker. Young athletes will learn many different total body exercises in order to help strengthen and prevent injuries. The focus is not on "how much weight" or "maxing out" but how to do the exercises safely and with the correct form to enhance performance. This can be very beneficial to athletes going into or currently participating in high school to prepare for weight classes or continue what progress has been made during the school year. Body weight exercises, resistance bands and light weights will be utilized to help your son or daughter build confidence in their abilities. Come get stronger!
Sports Performance Training for Young Athletes

Don't lose your edge over the summer by developing the skills and stamina to become a better athlete! Travis has a master's degree in Sports Conditioning and is the strength and conditioning coordinator over all CSI athletic teams. He will push your son or daughter to reach their potential and improve the right way! This class is for those at all levels of experience and will be adapted to the individual needs. Come join us!

Idaho College Enrollment Bump May Be Coming

A couple of key early indicators tracked by the Idaho State Board of Education suggest more Idaho high school seniors are planning to enroll in college or a career technical program in the fall.
- More than 9,300 Idaho high school seniors have completed their Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) forms to date - a two percentage point increase from this time last year.
- Nearly 11,000 seniors to date have used the State Board's Apply Idaho website to apply to college in Idaho - an increase of over 2,800 students compared to this time last year.
The bump in Idaho's FAFSA completions to date has moved our state up in national rankings. The National College Access Network last year ranked Idaho 44th among the 50 states in the percentage of high school seniors who had completed their FAFSA forms by the late June deadline. In 2019, as of the beginning of April, Idaho ranks 39th. If the increased rate of completion holds or even improves between now and the end of June, Idaho's ranking will move up at least five spots this year.
"I'm thrilled," Idaho State Board College and Career Advising Program Manager Byron Yankey said. "FAFSA completion is a predictor of student enrollment. It is a national marker. "When states see increased FAFSA's, college enrollment generally increases."
Yankey attributes the increase to Idaho's push of strategic initiatives to improve its "go-on" rate - the percentage of high school graduates who enroll either in career technical programs or college. The go-on rate has stayed at about 48 percent for the last five years.
Beginning three years ago, in partnership with the Legislature and the Governor, the Board launched several initiatives to improve the go-on rate.
Direct Admissions Program - automatically admitting all Idaho high school graduates to at least six of our public institutions. Each fall, the Board sends out Direct Admissions letters to each of Idaho's approximately 22,000 high school seniors.
Apply Idaho website - a single site where Idaho high school seniors can submit applications to one or more of Idaho's institutions free of charge and complete their FAFSA forms. The entire application process takes about 10 minutes.
FAFSA WEB - an online portal enabling high school counselors to monitor their students' progress throughout the process of applying for federal financial aid. Filling out a FAFSA form can be intimidating. "In the past, a counselor would see a student in the hallway and ask them if they had finished their FAFSA," Yankey said. "The usual answer was "yes" but the counselor had no way of knowing for sure. FAFSA WEB helps counselors improve their effectiveness because they know how to help students and where to start the process."
College and Career Counseling funds - help districts hire additional staff who focus on college and career exploration and provide resources to stage career fairs, parent nights and to provide campus visits. These efforts no longer are primarily confined to the last year of high school, but now begin in middle school and build each year a student is in high school. College and career counselors work with students and parents to provide information, answer questions, and provide encouragement to take the next step after graduation.
Board Member Dr. Linda Clark believes these efforts and initiatives are beginning to take hold "This is really encouraging for increasing enrollment in the fall," she said. "We on the Board recognize the value of these tools. If they are indeed making a difference as it appears they are, we will see increased enrollment figures for Idaho residents, the people these initiatives are intended for."

It's Not Too Late to Enroll in a College or Career Technical Program
Now that high school graduation is just about here for approximately 22,000 Idaho high school seniors, the Idaho State Board of Education is reminding them that they can still go to college in the fall, even if they haven't yet applied.
Approximately 11,000 postcards arrived in mail boxes throughout the state this week, sent to seniors who haven't submitted applications to one or more of Idaho's eight public colleges and universities. Last fall, the State Board sent letters to Idaho's entire senior class informing them that they had already been admitted and all they had to do was apply to the school or schools of their choice using the State Board's Apply Idaho website. About half of the senior class responded, while the other half hasn't.
"The idea behind this it to put out a message to high school seniors who haven't decided if they are going to "go-on" to school this fall, be it full-time or part-time, that it isn't too late to make those plans," State Board College and Career Advising Program Manager Byron Yankey said.
The postcard contains a link to a Next Steps webpage designed to answer questions hesitant seniors may have about enrolling in college or a career technical program.
The State Board also sent the postcard to former students who graduated a year ago and never enrolled. "These are students who may have taken a year off to work," Yankey said. "The message is the same for former students, that it is still not too late to make plans for one's future. All told we sent out about 18,000 post cards this week and we'll follow that up next week with a personalized email to each current and former student."
The "It's not too late" campaign is modeled after a pilot project campaign Yankey spearheaded last year aimed at high school seniors who showed interest in attending community college, but hadn't enrolled by spring. "We saw a bump last year as a result of that pilot project - enough of a bump to say let's ramp this up this year and see a similar result but on a bigger scale."

A few spots have opened up in the CSI Breckenridge Community Gardens!
These plots can be reserved for the season for $40. This is a self-care garden where you plant your own things and take care of the garden from start to finish. You will need to provide your own tools, watering system (there is access to water close to the gardens) and whatever else you might use for gardening.
