Congratulations to 2018 Runnels National Honor Society Inductees!
|
The Runnels High School chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS) welcomed 23 new members to the organization with a formal induction ceremony held in the Gladys Hague Runnels Theatre April 11.
The new members are junior Jillian Edmonson and sophomores Matthew Alfonso, Catherine Bonaventure, Jenna Carballo, Annie Fink, Sam Haase, Rachel Hargrove, Karli Hebert, Eric Ho, Bailey Hyatt, Jack Kahn, Cole Latiolais, Phillip Lukinovich, Ryan Ly, Anna Manning, Erin Oehrle, Julia Sager, Andrew Schacht, Janie Schlotterer, Ian Shaneyfelt, John Michael Spillane, Natalia Tooraen and Aubri Watts.
Also recognized at the ceremony were the new officers for the 2018-2019 school year. They are Emma Tooraen, president; Kayla Evans, vice president; Anna Claire Pousson and Daniel Mayeaux, co-secretaries; and Alex Morgan, treasurer.

Raider Rally Rocks the Campus
|
The 15th annual Raider Rally, sponsored by the Booster Club and held April 10 on the elementary playground, was a tremendous success. We had 23 booths, games, and activities at this year's event.
An annual fundraiser for various Runnels classes, clubs, groups, and teams, sales from the Rally totaled $6,450.00 (before costs incurred), according to Booster Club treasurer Julie Stevenson.
A highlight of the Rally was the announcement of the winner of the first-ever Raider Spirit Cup. The award went to the 8th Grade. On hand to accept the trophy on behalf of the class were 8th-grade officers Ashley Belcher, Blaiklee Guillot and Sydney Worsham (

). As part of their prize, the 8th-graders will enjoy a special school-sponsored "half-day-o'-fun" before the end of the school year.
Huge thank yous go to the Booster Club, overall event coordinator Julie Stevenson, co-chairs Wendy Worsham and Amy Taliaferro, the cheerleaders and sponsor Sherry Wilks, the Junior and Senior High School Band and director Jill Swetnam, and the many sponsors, volunteers, and participants who contributed to the success of this popular school event.

Classic Comedy
Tartuffe Gets Beatnik Vibe

The
Runnels High School Drama Department will present the classic comedy
Tartuffe
in the Gladys Hague Runnels Theatre on
April 20 at 7:00 pm and April 22 at 2:00 pm. Advance tickets are $5.00 for students and $8.00 for adults or $10 for all at the door. (Online ticket sales end 12 hours prior to performances.)
Though originally set in 17th century France, the Runnels version of the play transports the action to America in the 1950s. Tartuffe, the main character, and his minions are beatniks -- goatee wearing, bongo drum playing, poetry reciting, coffee house dwelling, beret topped beatniks. You don't want to miss it! Runnels Artists in Baton Rouge Gallery Show
|
The artwork of four Runnels High School students is currently on display at the Baton Rouge Gallery as part of the 2018 "Real-Life Experience Juried High School Exhibition." The show will be up through April 26.
The artists and their artwork are Cana Brumfield, grade 10, "Homeless," Audrey Guess, grade 9, "King of the Galaxy," Alexis Rogers, grade 11, "Self-Portrait," and Seth Miller, grade 11, "Wolf."
Approximately 240 works of original art were submitted to the show by public and private high school students in East Baton Rouge Parish. Only 68 pieces were selected.
In addition to having his art in the show, Seth Miller was chosen as a finalist for the Paul A. and Julia Dufour Richardson Scholarship, which provides funding for exceptional art students to attend private classes with recognized professional artists in the Baton Rouge area. The winner will be announced by May 10.

Twizzlers and Skittles Sweeten Up Elementary Geometry Lesson
|
To help her 4th grade students practice and review basic geometric elements, math teacher Christine Pousson reached for the candy jar this week.
With Twizzlers to represent lines and Skittles standing in for end points where rays of an angle meet, the students got to work forming geometric shapes such as intersecting lines, parallel lines, obtuse, acute, and right angles, line segments, and rays.
Once the students had mastered creating the 3-D representations of geometric shapes, they moved on to more traditional pencil sketches.
It was a sweet way to help students acquire and remember these important math skills. (

"R" Factor High School Talent Show Winners Announced
|
The "R" Factor High School Talent Show, held April 10 in the Gladys Hague Runnels Theatre, proved once again that Runnels has a deep bench of talented teens. The contestants competed for awards in two categories: Judge's Choice and Student's Choice.
Judge's Choice winners were: 1st place, Tyler Robbins and Caroline Collins (singers); 2nd place, Alex Matthews (juggler); and 3rd place Ally Garrity (dancer).
The winners in the Student's Choice category were: 1st place, Ashley Stansbury (pianist); 2nd place, Alex Matthews (juggler); and 3rd place, Peter Lukinovich (singer).
Many thanks to Emcees Landon Simpson, Harrison Bonaventure and Peter Lukinovich, judges Sam Coates, Rachel Hart, Neena McLain, Jill Swetnam and Johnice Thoms, and the theatre technical crew. We also thank the sophomore class and its sponsor, Nicole Latiolais, for organizing and coordinating the show, and Mrs. Thoms for pitching in as co-coordinator.

Runnels Students Earn Awards in Holocaust Essay Contest
|
Three Runnels students were honored with top awards in the 2018 Holocaust Writing Contest sponsored by the Jewish Federation of Greater Baton Rouge.
Sophomore Aubri Watts won first place in the high school division, and eighth graders Jacob Schmidt and Mary Aldin Luttrell placed second and third, respectively, in the middle school division.
Winners were recognized at a special Holocaust Memorial Service held April 8 at Beth Shalom Synagogue in Baton Rouge.
At the event, first-place winners were awarded $50 gift certificates to Barnes & Noble and $50 in cash; second-place winners received $35 gift certificates and $25 in cash; and third-place winners were presented with $35 gift certificates and $20 in cash.
English teachers Colleen LeBlanc and Kylie Harbin submitted the student essays to the contest.

American Studies Class Takes Field Trip To Windy City
|
Students from Norma Marsh's American Studies classes braved the chilly temperatures in the mid-west during spring break to visit points of cultural and architectural interest in Chicago.
The group visited the Art Institute, the Field Museum of Natural History, the Museum of Science and Industry, Navy Pier and the Garfield Park Conservatory, a site on the National Register of Historic Places featuring turn-of-the-century architecture.
The students also participated in a Locked Room adventure -- the Gold Rush Escape Game, Chicago. In the challenge, the students bested a gang of thieves by solving a series of clues to escape from a locked room -- and they did it with four minutes to spare! "It was a fun team-building exercise," said Mrs. Marsh, "because the students had to cooperate and work together to find the clues."

Seniors Sign with College Teams - Part Three in a Series
|
Several of our seniors have been recruited to play for college teams and will be recognized at a signing ceremony in the Catalano Gym on May 2. Over the next couple of weeks we'll continue to shine a light on these students and tell you where they're going.
Lainee Alfonso, a powerhouse player on the Lady Raiders varsity soccer team, has been awarded a soccer scholarship to William Carey University. Located in Hattiesburg, MS, William Carey University competes as an NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) and Southern Athletic Association school. Lainee was recruited to play center back for the Lady Cougars.
Though sidelined with an injury this season, Lainee has built an impressive sports resume over her six years on the girls varsity soccer team at Runnels. She was named 1st Team All-Metro, 1st Team All-State, and 1st Team All-District in her freshman, junior, and sophomore years. In addition, she made Defensive MVP as a sophomore and Overall MVP in 7th, 8th, and 10th grades. She also played on the Olympic Development Placement Louisiana State Team for two years.
To round out her list of accomplishments, Lainee is also an honor roll student, a member of the Student Ambassador Club, and the 2018 Runnels Homecoming Queen.
Congratulations to Lainee, her parents Lacie and Angelo Alfonso, and her soccer coach at Runnels, Angie Mitchell.

Dr. Victor Correa-Cruz
, assistant professor of violin and orchestra director at Southeastern Louisiana University, for sharing his talent and expertise with members of Jennifer and Dan Cassin's string classes this week. Dr. Correa Cruz stopped by on Monday to work with the students.
Prior to joining the faculty at Southeastern, Dr. Correa-Cruz was the head of the String Quartet Department at the Conservatorio Superior de Musica de Salamanca (Spain) and taught violin and orchestra in Madrid at the Conservatorio "Adolfo Salazar." (

POWERLIFTING
Congratulations to senior Sam Day for winning 1st place in the Super Heavy Weight Division at the Powerlifting RAW High School State Championship held April 7 at the University of Lafayette.
Sam also set the RAW total meet record by lifting 1,471.6 lbs. Total weight is calculated by combining his heaviest lift from each category. Sam successfully squatted 556.7 lbs., bench pressed 347.2 lbs., and deadlifted 567.7 lbs.
This meet serves as a qualifier for the 2019 (Raw and Equipped) High School Nationals that will take place in Alexandria.

TENNIS
The Raiders varsity tennis teams competed this week against two of the strongest schools in the league, Dunham and Episcopal, and chalked up both victories and defeats. “We might have lost the war, but we fought fiercely and mightily,” said Coach Kathrin Sieberth.
Eric Huygues and Kyle Sieberth won their Singles matches against Dunham, while both girls Doubles teams of Rachel Wehbe and Catherine Bonaventure and Hannah Barback and Anna Kadi suffered losses in tight 3 set matches.
Senior Natalie Justus was the lone winner at #1 Singles against Episcopal. Natalie played an exhaustive 3 set match but stayed focused and posted a win.
On Monday, the team will travel to Lafayette for the Regional Tournament. Best of luck, Raiders!

Placing 3rd in the district and ranked #2 in the state, the Lady Raiders softball team finished the season 17-6. The Ladies will play the first round playoff game against #7, Grace Christian, on April 26 in Sulphur, LA.
Kudos to the top individual performers for the season. They are Sophie Treadaway, .525 Batting Average; Anna Manning with 30 Hits; Carlie Aucoin with 10 Doubles; Carlie Aucoin hitting 4 Triples; Kayleigh Nicholson with 29 RBIs; Sarah Soileau with 36 Runs; Sarah Soileau with 29 Stolen Bases; Kayleigh Nicholson, .972 Fielding%; Maddy Sutton, .970 Fielding%; Grace Smith, .940 Fielding%; and Kayleigh Nicholson with 15 Wins.
